@@robinkirk1821 I hope you enjoy it when you get to it! 😄
I started reading the book after watching a conversation between Clarkson and Malcom Guite, but DNF because I felt I was not grasping her concepts. Like you, I’m a lover of words and language so I was surprised and disappointed that I wasn’t enjoying it. Maybe the timing just wasn’t right. Thanks to your encouragement I will give it another try.
@@anniehaynes6564 Non-fiction books are like that for me, too. Sometimes they hit really hard and other times it’s just not the right season of life for that particular read. So, I completely understand!
I've been wanting to read this book for a while! Great review, makes me even more eager to read it.
@@ishah4714 I was looking forward to this book as well and it did not disappoint.
🎉🎉 so glad you loved it. It’s one of my favorites! The Netflix adaptation is really well done too.
@@CandlewickLibrary Oh, I have to watch the movie now that you’ve said it was well done! 🙌🏼
I am loving your reviews! 😊
@@robinkirk1821 Thank you, Robin! I hope you enjoy my recommendations if you choose to pick them up 😄
I read this book a few years ago at the recommendation of a friend. I don’t know why I didn’t want to read it at the time but forced myself to anyway. By the end of the book I felt so sad the story had ended and felt myself attached to the characters. I’m also in a classics phase and have a hard time reading modern literature.
@@migdalahb I’m the same way! This book has been on my shelf for years and now that I’ve read it, I’m ashamed it took me so long to read it 🙈 Modern books just don’t compare with classics and I can’t even exactly name why but it’s true 🤷🏻♀️
Yay!! The camping looked like so much fun… except that terrifying spider 😅. I’m glad you liked Guernsey.
@@CandlewickLibrary it was fun, thank you! That spider really was eerie 🫣 Guernsey was so good, I’m sad I can’t read it again for the first time!
That spider!!!! 😱 I'm so glad you've been enjoying Guernsey, I've enjoyed that one and want to re-read it soon!
@@ChantelReadsAllDay The spider was equally creepy and cool! Thank you, it was a delight to read and one I know that I will revisit in the future! 😄

@@CandlewickLibrary thank you! I can’t wait to share it with my kiddos 😄
I just added this series to my 40 books to read before turning 40 list! I love how each story relates to one from the Bible.
@@migdalahb I love that idea! I need to come up with a list like that 😄
Thanks for sharing the publication order! Adding this to my 2025 plans.
@@robinkirk1821I hope you enjoy them as much as I did! You’ll have to come back and let me know how you like them 😄
I read the series for the first time with my son last year. We loved it so much that he is insisting that my 16 year old daughter read them as well. She plans to start this week. She has watched the movies with me over the years, but Prince Caspian & Dawn Treader are so different from the books. The Prince Caspian movie really did Peter dirty, considering he is amazing by comparison in the book.
@@kelleymcfadin how special that you and your son got to read them together for the first time 🥹 I hope your daughter loves them! I agree completely, do not judge the books by the movies because you are so right - those movies were a terrible representation 🫣
Your review is so encouraging and has inspired me to give Paradise Lost a try. Thank you.

Interesting!!! Thank you for a great review, looking forward to this book!!!

I knew I recognized the Cello music in your intro, which I love. The film "Byron" (2003) had that same piece of music. It's beautiful, thank you.
The cello is my favorite instrument to listen to, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I can’t remember which Bach Cello Suite it is, perhaps No. 5?
Exactly! Frankenstein is so different than I expected too. I haven’t read The Abolition of Man yet. I have read excerpts, but not the whole thing. I need to get to it! Great review!
@@CandlewickLibrary I really enjoyed it! I love The Abolition of Man, especially as a homeschool mom. It’s worth the read 😄
I've also just finished Frankenstein...and it was a revelation. The writing 👌 The themes 👌 The storytelling 👌 Loved it all.
@@ishah4714 I agree, I wasn’t expecting it to blow me away like it did!
I was very surprised by the events that actually happened in Frankenstein versus Hollywood's version when I finally read it last year. I was never a huge fan of Frankenstein until I decided to read the book. I love the book! Mary Shelley did such a wonderful job evoking both compassion and revulsion from her readers; not only towards the monster, but towards Frankenstein himself and his actions as well. I love that it is a book that makes a person think about humanity and morality. Great review!
@@kelleymcfadin yes yes yes 🙌🏼 I’m on par with everything you’re saying. Mary Shelley is one of the best writers I’ve read and I wasn’t expecting that going in 😄
These are all so good!!
@@CandlewickLibrary that makes me so excited to hear! 🙌🏼
Yes, Study in Scarlet is the first one!
@@CandlewickLibrary thank you for letting me know! 😄
Oooh, I love mysteries! My fave Holmes is Hound of the Baskervilles. I think you’ll enjoy Rebecca…very gothic with lengthy descriptive prose of scenery and it has a good mystery. My start with Agatha Christie was Murder on the Orient Express and I really enjoyed it. I think it was a good standalone to start with her books. Frankenstein is one of my fave classics. I hope you have a fun month of reading. 🧡🌻
@@ReadJournalLove I’ve heard that that’s the best Sherlock! You’ve made me so excited to get to all of these books and I can tell it’s going to be a great reading month 😄
I agree with all your insights! I read this a couple years ago and I was not ready for the hot mess of that relationship. I read it because of the gothic influence and that was superb like you said, but I don’t think I’ll be rereading it. 😊 This October, for my gothic classics, I read Uncle Silas and Mysteries of Udolpho which I would reread.
I totally understand your feelings! Udolpho is mentioned in Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen which I’m currently reading. So I’ll have to look into it 😄
I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Frankenstein, Northanger Abbey, and Chronicles of Narnia. I love all those books. I love that you're doing mystery books right now. Maybe there's something in the air, because I have also been drawn to them lately! One of the books I'm currently reading is By the Pricking of My Thumbs by Agatha Christie, but I love Miss Marple! I plan to read one that involves her next. I hope you enjoy Sherlock Holmes, I've always loved those stories. If you haven't already, I would definitely consider reading Moonstone by Wilkie Collins at some point in the future. It's one of my favorite mysteries.
@@kelleymcfadin I have definitely had The Moonstone by Wilke Collins on my radar! If I don’t burn myself on mystery it’s likely one I’ll add next to my TBR 😄 I’ve already filmed all my reviews for those books so they’ll be coming down the pipeline 👏🏼 I’m excited for Sherlock and Agatha Christie because they are both so well loved in their genre.
I love all your choices! The Potatoe Peel Pie is really great! I'm excited to see what you think of all of your choices. I've read most of them but not Gaudy Night yet.
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD I started The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I’m flying through it so I’ll definitely be sharing my thoughts 😄 thank you! Did you like Rebecca?
@humblyhaley yes I love Rebecca!
Yes, mood reading is the best sometimes. It doesn't feel like it's homework. I am right there with you in regards to reading some mysteries. I am gonna get to And then There Were None. And OH my gosh, maybe possibly I should read Rebecca as well. These were some excellent picks Haley, perfect for November's cozy month. And please do the reading and camping vlog! 🏕

@@Tree9939ak the UA-cam algorithm is just weird sometimes, thank you!
Great review! The writing in this book is fantastic, whether you like these characters or not. The book is crafted beautifully.
@@32mybelle thank you! I agree, the book is worth a try for the writing alone. 😄
Jane Eyre is my favorite book as well. If you like Charlotte Brontë you need to read Villette, which is the last novel she wrote before her untimely death; it's an amazing book. Jane Eyre remains my favorite because I read it when I was 12 so it really influenced me as a person, however I do believe that Villette is better from a literary point of view; I love that book so much. I also recommend Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, it's a great book too, and I totally love Gabriel Oak, one of the main characters, plus he displays some very Christian-lile qualities. Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame are a must as well, both have a very interesting take on Christianity and were written by a man who was not religious yet his faith in God was very strong. If you want something a little lighter I suggest all the Sherlock Holmes stories and novels as well as some of Jules Verne's books. Shakespeare shouldn't be forgotten either: I was so much into Hamlet when I was around 12 that my younger siblings and I would act out some of the scenes. I grew up reading only classical books (mostly 19th century British and French literature); nowadays I read mostly contemporary fantasy and mystery novels but my love for the classics remains.
@@KolorfulDreamsArtKda these are all some really great recommendations and I appreciate your time in giving them thoughtfully. These are all books I would love to get to, particularly the ones you’ve mentioned on faith. I also don’t consider myself religious but have a great faith in God 🙌🏼 Jane Eyre remains my absolute favorite book as well.
@@humblyhaley if you're not religious yet you have a very strong faith then you'll love Victor Hugo ☺️.
Read the book in class in grade 8 and loved it. There is a love story, but it's not a romance book. It's a story of family - the good, the bad, and how emotions can lead us down dark paths if we're not careful. Liked your review, especially the comments about Nelly.
@@hm4184 I agree completely! Thank you 😄
GRADE 8 LIKE FIXERS HOLY SHIT LIMBUS COMPANY
I'm not a fan of 'Wuthering Heights' I read it as a child and I've studied it. I'm team 'Jane Eyre' because I can root for her, I also love the way Charlotte Bronte represents religion in that book.
Jane Eyre is my favorite book for the exact reasons you’ve stated, so I totally get it 😄 Wuthering Heights is very dark in comparison.
I guess u'll be voting for trump
I do hope you will read Anne Bronte's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall to complete the trio! As a Christian, it would be right up your alley, and in many ways it's just as remarkable as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.
@@melanie62954 I absolutely will! Your recommendation makes me want to bump it up higher in my TBR so maybe I’ll get to it before the fall/winter season is over 😄
@@humblyhaley Excellent! Anne is unfairly neglected in Bronte studies, IMO. She doesn't write with the same force or poetic genius as her sisters, but her prose is still very elegant, and her insight into human nature just as keen. Scholars have also tended to ignore her because her characters tend to be more conventional in their religious presentation, but that doesn't mean they don't challenge social constrictions or have minds of their own. Agnes Grey is a beautiful story and she is in some ways like Fanny Price, but I think Tenant is Anne's masterpiece.
@@melanie62954 I love Fanny Price so that makes me really want to try Agnes Grey! I will very likely read them both within the next year, thank you for your insight 😄
Great insight! There are definitely things you captured in thought that I missed when I read it. I think this calls for me having to read it again!
@@kelleymcfadin Thank you! This is definitely a book you could read multiple times and still always find something new in it 😄 I know this won’t be my last time with this story!
Yes! Her writing is what does it for me. She was so talented.
@@CandlewickLibrary I completely agree! It’s such a literary masterpiece 😄
The scene of Nelly breaking into Cathy Jr.’s chest, finding her and Linton’s loveletters and sadistically tormenting her gives a very shocking view into victorian child-hatred
I read this for the first time almost 2 years ago. Emily has a beautiful writing style! However, I also feel like I should give a warning anytime I recommend this book to someone 😂
@@kelleymcfadin A warning is indeed entirely appropriate before recommending this book! 😂
When it came out the book was hated; it showed domesticity in a light not then liked. Great book, and often difficult to follow with the names! [Well, I struggled]. Thanks for your thoughts.
Oh man, you've got me wanting to re-read it now, just for that atmosphere and Emily's poetic writing!
@@ChantelReadsAllDay It’s perfect for this time of year! When I watched your vlog, I thought Wuthering Heights would make a great cemetery read 🪦
Wurthering Heights has some significant twists, but Jane Eyre is also my favorite and I did not read them until I was in my 40s. 😊
@@athomeandfieldwithsofieC228z1 Jane Eyre as a heroine is just my favorite and I admire her character so much 😄

I read that this year as well as the Lewis book about it. There were parts I didn’t like as much, and other parts that I thought were beautifully written and fascinating.
@@CandlewickLibrary there were definitely some places that I had to push myself to get through and others that I loved. It was a tough read but well worth it. I’m glad you read them both too 😄 Did you like Lewis’s perspective?
@@humblyhaley I did, but I kind of wish I had read Paradise Lost first and then Lewis’ book instead of the other way around.
@@CandlewickLibrary I went back and listened to his chapters on Satan and Adam and Eve on audiobook after I finished Paradise Lost so I understand what you mean
Good that you are happy with your life choices. Sounds very different from mine. But the book sounds interesting. The person who got the role as Sauron in the serie "The Rings of Power", read from this book in his audition for the role , if you are familiar with that world. It was a monolog by Satan he was asked to read. Guess that is why your video comes up in my feed.
@@gunnhildk6299 It’s a very thought provoking book that I would recommend to anyone. I would like to read Tolkien’s works then dive into the screen adaptations but I could see why someone would use it for an audition. I’ll remember that whenever I get to it to see how that character fits the role.
