One-Way Valves for Crankcase Pressure
Racing engines for control line team race and speed often require a pressurised fuel system to keep up with the demands of the engine. The preferred method is to use pressure from the engine's crankcase to pump up the fuel tank and force fuel through to the needle valve at a consistent rate. The downside of this method is that when the engine is stopped, fuel may sneak into the crankcase through the pressure line and flood the engine. To avoid this the tank may have an airlock, and/or the pressure line can have a one-way valve that permits pressure from the crankcase to the tank, but blocks fuel flow in the other direction.
Here's how I make them.
Credit for the design of the valve goes to Grant Potter of Australia - a former F2C Team Race World Champion.

Irvine XR15 Part Two - Test Runs
Переглядів 14614 днів тому
A few days ago I put up a video of the conversion of this Irvine XR15 from RC car format to Sow Goodyear racer format: ua-cam.com/video/QwSWnN4RMQc/v-deo.html Now it's time to test run it and to measure performance. The aim is to get it turning an APC 7x4 at around 20,000rpm in flight, which means exceeding 18,000rpm on the ground. Test flights will confirm whether this is enough to drag a Slow...
Irvine XR15 Part One - Goodyear Conversion
Переглядів 16114 днів тому
I've takan an obsolete 1990's RC car engine and converted it to race in control line Goodyear Team Race. It's an Irvine XR15 from England - 2.5cc ABC glow engine - originally made to run in the Schumacher RC cars. Part One includes discussion of the engine and what it needs to serve in its new role, making the modifications and new parts. Part Two will show test running of the converted engine ...
First Flight in 70 years - Mosquito NZ2308
Переглядів 71 тис.5 місяців тому
DeHavilland Mosquito NZ2308 was built in Australia and served with RNZAF 75 Squadron after the Second World War. After 70 years of idle decay it has been restored by Mosquito Aircraft Restoration in Drury and AvSpecs in Ardmore, New Zealand. Here's some footage of the first taxi test and first flight test on March 18th, 2024. Apologies for the sound quality - it was very windy and I was too far...

How to make Team Race Wheels
Переглядів 7896 місяців тому
Wheels for control line Team Race models can be hard to come by, especially in the size required for Class B models. Here's how I make them from 30mm cast urethane round bar sourced from Aliexpress. It slices beautifully, shapes easily by sanding and yet lasts for years and years in use. Most classes require a minimum 25mm diameter wheel, so it's wise to make them 27-28mm to allow for wear. Cla...
Shortest Day 2022 - Slow Combat

A quick flashback to June 2022 and the 23rd Shortest Day Slow Combat contest at Meremere Raceway. This is a bout between Alistair Boys and Kevin Barnes. Alistair won the bout 3-1 and went on to finish second overall. They're both using F2D combat models fitted with ASP 15 engines flying at a speed limit of around 110km/h.
Engine Run - Picco 12 Turbo
Переглядів 3596 місяців тому
I found this long lost video while digging around in the backups. It's one of the earliest RC car engine conversions I did - a Picco 12 Turbo. I don't know the full and correct model name, but it is an ABC 3-port engine with a Turbo plug head and a turbo-cut crankshaft. It was nearly wrecked by its original owner - scored piston, covered in dirt - but miraculously it still runs quite well. I ne...

I testing this 1970s Czech-made MVVS G7 2.5cc glow engine a few years ago and found that it was in need of some refinement. Here it is after the first few improvements - a smaller venturi to allow it to run on a suction fuel feed system, and the head clearance set to a more effective level. Fuel is 10% nitromethane, 20% castor oil and 70% methanol. O'Donnell Sport medium glow plug. The model at...
Engine Run - HPI 3.5 CL Conversion
Переглядів 1887 місяців тому
Here's another RC car bargain that I have converted for control line aircraft use. The original intent was to use it in Open Goodyear Team Racing, but one of my Go21-MG66 has taken that job. This worn out piston/liner set isn't great at hand starting and a bit gutless at low revs, but it looks like it starts to wake up at 27,000 rpm, so there might be some merit in setting it up with a mini-pip...

Engine Run - Irvine 15R Turbo

This Irvine 15R Turbo started off as an RC car engine, which I got for $33USD on eBay. It was in great condition, perhaps only run once or twice, if that. A few hours later, it's set up for Goodyear racing with a venturi, Rossi Pylon NVA, crankcase pressure tap and a more civilized head size. It probably still needs some loosening up and a bit of attention to head clearance, but it shows some p...

This Mossie is actually a brand new fuselage and tail feathers. It Belongs to Rod Lewis, Lewis Air Legends. That's Steve Hinton at the controls, he flew it 15 hrs in NZ, then it was shipped to Chino California. Kermit Weeks just put out a video of it and explains it all. This is technically a new build with original data plates and hardware

Great work! That was fast, thank you wery much. 😊 Engine seems to run flawlessly. The hot restarts seem very promising. Where did you get the bhp estimates on the apc pylon props? Just for comparison with the same props my DJS did 18800 with an APC 7x4, 21200 on 6.5x5 and 23000 on 7x3.

Thanks again. I'm very pleased with the starting. The previous one was difficult to start until it had a lot of running. APC publish calculated propeller data on their website and it's possible to extract power absorption figures to estimate an engine's power output. There are some discrepancies, but it's useful anyway. Aeromodeller magazine published similar data in the '90s that was determined by experiment, but it had limited range. APC's calculated data goes beyond physical limitations. I'll send you some info and do a video about it at some point.
