Bass After Dark

A channel for all of the night owl bass players.
Soundgarden - My Wave (Bass Cover)
Here is a somewhat simplified version of the bass part on this very tricky tune.
My goal was to come up with a transcription that is "gig-ready" -- something that locks in with the rest of the band while reducing the odds of making any major mistakes.
It was a challenge to transcribe the rhythms, especially the bridge section after the first "flourish". Here the bass is in 3/4 for the most part, but the guitar riff is in 5/4.
Plus, I am convinced that after each "flourish" there is a missing eighth note, so that the open E at the end of the flourish actually should be thought of as starting the down beat of a new measure. So the flourish measure can be thought of as being in 7/8 time. You can hear the drummer has some high-hats to cue in the band after each flourish, and it is clear that the beat gets turned around due to the missing eighth note.
My guess is that the bass part at the very end is improvised. For this transcription, I chose to simplify that ending section. You can keep the bass part in 3/4 time for the most part -- however if you add one measure of 4/4 in there then the bass part lines up nicely for the very last chord. I chose the 4/4 measure to be exactly half-way in the ending part, which means there are 8 phrases before the 4/4 measure and 8 more after the 4/4 measure.
I am really looking forward to playing this tune with my band at our next gig. I hope we can pull it off!

Thanks for sharing! Amazing tone and feel!
Thanks very much for the kind words.
Nice. Upon a single listen, it seems like you might be able to put 4 sharps in the key signature so you don't have to put an accidental in front of every C?
Good point! It’s in C#m.
You made that tricky bass line a piece of cake!
Great song choice I think I'll learn this song too. Skills n great groove. Why so serious tho...I was kind of sad not seeing you express your joy in playing so well....smile n enjoy the ride.
Amazing!!!!
Thank you!
LETS GO METSSE
This cover is great and really helped me with my cover. I was struggling to get my head around the rhythm and your transcription really helped! Check out what I did with it... ua-cam.com/video/y-qjd6cVsW8/v-deo.htmlsi=5LQAPMrT0zDOY7dX
Thanks. Nice job on your cover!
@@bassafterdark7186 glad you liked it!
Great job!!
Thanks yeah I love this baseline. Chuck Rainey is one of the all time greats.
@@bassafterdark7186 I am a long time bass player myself and play lots of Dan, always self taugt by ear, I can manage 90% of time, but had to print out chord chart on this great tune---Play On!!!
You're the only one I've seen play it as it should be played, with your thumb 👏👍
thanks. It's all about the 👍
tks, Have u the tabs?
please see link in description.
Great, tks
Rock steady! Love the bit of vibrato on the tied eighths in the chorus.
Thanks!
great cover...straight to the point.well done..❤ from ireland
Glad you liked it!
Great job 👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic what a great cover, excellent technique and tone my man!
Thanks for the kind words.
I think it's a 11 vs 4 rhythm, not dotted quavers
Agreed that the rhythm on the transcription is incorrect. But they are just 8th duplets.
@@nathanaeldavenport2251 that half-note silence at the end of the bar implies 8 16-th notes, but it sounds to me more like 9 16th-notes in that silence. That adds up 33 16-th notes in the bar, or 11 groups of 3, hence the 11 against 4 rhythm
Heavenly! Love the glasses. Such a clever medley. And, from a bass playing perspective, I love how the end of each note is played with as much care as the start; that's the sign of a true pro!
Thank you very much!
that was nice...
Thank you!
This is what I mean playing bass, one of the videos I liked the most. Great!!!
Thanks for the kind words! Much appreciated
Amazing! This one went right over my head upon first listen. But spend a little time with it, and wow! It's kind of like a musical version of an old-lady-young-lady optical illusion. The meter sounds different depending on where you put your focus. But with this video and accompanying transcription, you have pulled the curtain away and revealed the magic trick. Bravo!
Thank you. Yes this is indeed a great song, I don't think I've ever heard anything like it before.
:46 part is cool! Love listening to this song! Great Cover!
Yeah I agree, that slide adds a lot of spice to the track.
the ones at the beginning should all be semiquaver rests and not eighth note rests. Amazing job!
Thanks for the feedback. I think if you made the rests semiquaver rests (16th note rests), then you would need to compensate by making the note values quavers (8th notes). Since the note duration is short, I opted for the semiquaver notes and quaver rests rather than the other way around.
thank you @@bassafterdark7186
Nice one 😎 This song is bloody awesome.
I know, right?!?!
this piece merits a time signature breakdown class by estepario siberiano or hopefully the author himself, so deliciously difficult ! I was betting this was sort of a 9/8 rhythm but 4/2 and 6/2 i just don´t get
You can count in 4/4 during the whole song. At 0:31 , in a way, it is still 4/4. If you focus on drums and keep 4/4 in mind, you can count in your head like if they add half a bar at the end of each bar. So instead of 8 pulses, you got 12 pulses. They repeat this 4 times then at 0:48 , back to basic 4/4
3:54 yummers!!
I love that step up to the E on the chorus. Lovely.
yes this song is amazing! One of my favorite KNOWER tunes!
Perfect! Spot-on! Congrats!!!
