My problem is my property has ants. I spent hundreds of dollars on poisons to eradicate the ants but they continue to pop up. Ants eat my worms. What can I do?
@@vincentmiceli2554 yikes. Fortunately I haven’t had to deal with ants like that. The first thing that comes to mind is either keeping your bin on the wetter side or regularly sprinkling the top with diatomaceous earth.
Ooooh, the add on bins! I need one. Do they not get smushed in the bottom? And what if they leave other unprocessed scraps in the bottom? Do you sift those out or just use them with the castings?
@@awakeningcreatives yay! I can bring one with me when I come to your place if you like :). They don’t get smushed. If you do have any larger, unprocessed bits still in the bottom bin, you can just pull them out and add them to the new bin. Or you can certainly sift if you like more fine castings, then dump all the remaining chunky bits into the new bin.
I have a hard time keeping it dry enough without overwhelming it with cardboard or paper. Is there something else I can add to dry it up a bit?

Nice. I have a few cocoon nurseries and 4 Vermibags myself. I have been worming for almost 6 years . I have 3 outdoor worm bins , big ones too .
@@Dee.C that’s fantastic! Keep it up! I’m looking forward to the time when I have some land and more space for more worms lol
Motivation to keep going on my endeavor where im at. Thanks 😊! I sifted a bin last week that i started 3 months ago and used similar to this video process and also scaling from small start (finances) and was thinking maybe wasting time....but this got me enthused again thinking how many babies i found and stuff and was debating to turn a raised bed to a worm compost for bigger space for them.... Glad i found this video ❤
@@brittse oh good! I’m so glad it’s helpful! We all start at different places, but many of the worm farmers I have chatted with also started really small. As you grow, as long as you are able to get your systems dialed in, scale will likely grow as well. Think of it like interest in a savings account. When you have a small balance, you will still be gaining at least some interest, but as your balance grows, your interest gains will continue to increase as well. Same with worms and castings :)
You could pull the tape off the jars and put it on the pots! 😂
@@Debbie-Keller ha! That would have been an easy solution!
I just can't thin my plants. I divide them and put them in other places. Lol
@@Debbie-Keller I’ve definitely been guilty of this many times lol. I spend all winter mapping out the perfect crop plan, then when spring comes, it’s almost as if I lose my mind and just start planting new things I’m excited about all over the place 🤣
@RosWigglers Exactly! I just Love plants!!
I freeze all my food and still get fruit flies. Any ideas. Thanks for your time and energy in your videos.
@@theresarothenberger2264 when you feed your frozen food scraps, are you burying them with more bedding? That’s another great way to help prevent running into fruit fly issues :)
This is an very interesting!!
I found it ironically comical that this video pops up right in the last week of my current biology term where we're growing radish or bean seeds in 3 different light treatments. Dark, low light and high light. I chose radish seeds being that I'm in Pennsylvania. It's fascinating to see the difference in growth rates ! In both of our experiments ! Looks like i need to start using worm castings for my houseplants ! 🪴 🪱
I have quite a few of these plants and they grow great in everything. I have some stuck in well water, sandy soil from the yard, potting mix, heavy worm castings from our red wigglers, they all grow very well. They are an extremely easy plant
Worm castings tea always works great examples 🇳🇿🪱
@@dnawormcastings thanks I agree! I’m always telling my customers to take a picture of their plant the day they give it the tea, then take a picture a few days later, because they will be able to visibly see the results.
Nice job Ro!

so are they shy when tey sex themselves, they need a quiet area for sex? without being disturbed...amazing!!!
Do you put them into a nursery bun?
@@chadrichardson6219 I do!
Correct me if I'm wrong, number 1 looks like it is rooted from the top of the cutting.
@@alexcarr8503 no, it was just multiple cuttings from the same vine. It’s still rooted from the bottom of the cutting.
Ro where did you get the bags for your castings .
I would see if you can find two of the plants in older potting soil, I notice a huge difference with my castings once the soil in the pot is spent. I think with you giving them that rich compost mix that they will both get enough from the new soil since you said you added some compost with the potting mix. It may take a year or two for the deficiencies to show up. I see the most adding the castings teas to older potted plants that really need it.
@@MyMicrobialGarden very true! I’ve seen amazing results that way as well. I have some pics floating around somewhere, but it’s definitely a good idea for a video sometime!

I need to know how that squash in the background has avoided the vine borers.
@@StLouisBear I’d say part of it is definitely the help of worm castings and worm casting tea! Also, it seems like butternut squash are more resistant to the vine borers and squash bugs than other squash varieties :)
Great experiment to find out how your Casting go🇳🇿🪱

How did you togo bins do at the event
@@StrawberryRiverRedWigglers I bring a few to each vending event I do. Every once in awhile I’ll sell them there, but they tend not to be my big sellers. More often people that want those order on my website for local pickup. HOWEVER, I do find that having a bin on display (even if I don’t sell any) is very helpful when talking to customers and being able to show them where the castings and tea come from :)
@@RosWigglers highly valuable point there, farmers market is my target industry as well, so something to show for display goes along ways.

Hello Ro, I love the camera from above! I've just started my very first breeder bin. I am thinking that my density is probably too low, but I was finished picking and counting for the day. Take care
@@CharlotteDorn-q1x thank you! And yeah, the counting can get really daunting.
Garden? That looks like a dang farm, nice!
@@projectoldman3383 haha thank you! It is pretty much a farm. We have 33 raised beds and chickens :)
Man, the worm people community is great. I really appreciate the camaraderie and willingness to give information. I had seen some suggestions lower than what I'm seeing here, closer to 1\2 pound (4-5 hundred) for the small mortar tray so that's what I run my bins at. It would make some sense to be conservative as the lower production with fewer numbers wouldn't be as dramatically low as reaching the overpopulation threshold. I would bet the sweet spot would be around 5-8 hundred fatties per tray for me.
@@projectoldman3383 I agree! Such great people and an amazing place to learn! And yeah, I’m thinking about the same so currently have several different trays going with different numbers of worms and will see which has more cocoons. I’m also assuming it’ll be the 5-8 hundred range.
Hi Ro. I like your idea and I’ll give it a try. I’m new to this 10 months in started with 100 worms. Boy oh boy do they multiply fast.
I started my little worm bins about 9 months ago. I think they have populated enough to stop making cocoons. I need to make another bin. What size sifters would you recommend if I could only buy two sizes? I have 1/4/. 1/8 and 1/12 in the green plastic sifter but I’d really like that turbo sift. I think I’d sift more of it was an easier process. I’m enjoying your videos!
What a garden! My garden is why I am raising worms!
@@juliepoolie5494 thanks! That’s how I got into work farming myself :)
This was very good! What a great opportunity for people to buy your bins!
@@juliepoolie5494 thank you!
Hey Ro! I love that you have your feed zone along the long edge of the bin. I never ever thought to do it that way 😳🙄🤩. I think it’s a great idea! ❤
@@RockinWorms thank you! It seems to work pretty well, since the worms don’t have to travel as far :)
I dont remember how to hyperlink a specific part of the video, I've noticed similar stratification of worms. Im trying to figure out if my bins are heating up in that particular area for whatever reason. Your sifter looks pretty rad. Can't seem to find a happy medium for moisture content in the bin.
For pure reds I found the best numbers to be 185 worms per sq ft and ENC’s at 100 per sq ft. I’ve done the same experiment several times and the numbers keep coming back the same, or close to it. I have not done the experiment with blues yet, but plan to run a trial this fall when I get my pure blue stock up a bit higher. I find mixed worm bins produce 1/4-1/3 less cocoons than a pure breeder bin so when I have done this I stock higher densities so they produce more. Those I only did once so it was very unscientific ;). All my others I’ve set up multiple bins, kept all food, moisture and bedding the same. I also ran each of the bin sets multiple times to make sure I didn’t miscount or mess up somewhere. This is a great way to figure out what works best for you. Experiments are always the best and a great way to learn! Word of mouth is wonderful, but there’s nothing like your own experience!
@@brookeonyx6271 oh wow! Thanks for this info! I was thinking the mixed bins probably had a likelihood of being a bit lower, but I REALLY don’t want to spend the time separating them lol. I purchased pure red wigglers so I could start fresh with those for breeder bins, but I’m also still running the mixed ones as well.
@@RosWigglers I understand not wanting to separate them, it’s a mess! It’s also hard to get them split 100%. It took a few years to get pure blues since I’d keep finding reds in the bins.
