0:09 that voice change got me so off guard😳
Jay was a true artist
Did they leave a word out of the title? I mean, "We Beseech The....what?"
"We Beseech Thee, Hear Us!" Meaning, Father, hear our prayers.
@@Peter-z9t See my previous reply. This was a joke.
divine voice
Randee Heller went on to play Daniel LaRusso's mom in The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai.
I am here to honour Jay Hamburger who has passed away this last Monday March 25, 2024. My love for you Jay is strong. You are a pure soul and a man of compassion and curiosity.
Very sorry for your loss, everyone's loss
Thank you. That is kind of you.
Coincidentally, I haven't been able to get this song out of my head recently and happily found this gem
5:17
The loveliest song in "Godspell."
And hard to sing!
Mary Magdalene gets her song.
That's not supposed to be Mary Magdalene. This was the woman caught in adultery. They were not the same person.
This is one of my favorite songs from Godspell, and while Joanne does a great job with the song here (at least the lyrics were more understandable), I think that Lynne's version in the movie had more joyful energy.
I actually watched this original broadcast of Godspell in 1971. And I am amazed at how much of it I remembered pretty well! It really made a long-lasting impression on me. It was so well done. ❤
Was the stage version like this? I’ve only ever seen the film version, which I love!
Each stage version is a bit different (in the stage version I saw, Jesus slapped Judas when He called him a hypocrite, and there was a short bit about a phone call, where the phone was handed to Jesus, telling Him the call was from His Father) but it was otherwise essentially the same. It would all depend on the director's vision, I suppose.
Thank you for this-I’ve only seen the movie so I’ve never seen this song-only heard it on the original album.
Incredibly beautiful.
0:10 And that's Bob Garrett doing Robin's role.
The Cross by John Joseph Hawkins Ignorance Is a funny thing... It Gives Us men... A lot to share... But Who Can say What Makes a... Man To Cling To Aloneness... As Once did A Dying King ...
I just discovered that a studio recording of Bless the Lord sung by Joanne Jonas is on Alexa. Enjoy!
Ms. Jonas was born to be in Godspell, both on stage and on film. Her singing. dancing, and facial expressions were second to none in the movie. It is hard to watch the other cast members in the film when she is present. That she didn't continue her musical or film career.....well, the loss is totally ours.
What did she actually do afterwards; and who is "Rolling" (father to her child)???
Flawless.
4:43 Joanne always gets the harmony
yep! and the same little blink/nod at the same beat.
0:00, 0:37, 3:46
Meg Benett Michael Forella as David Bob Garrett Randee Heller as Gilmer Ryan Hilliard as Stephen Joanne Jonas as herself Elizabeth Lathram as Peggy Dean Pitchford as Jeffrey Mark Planner as Lamar Howard L. Sponseller, Jr. as Herb Holy carp, six boys and four girls? No kidding
Wasn't Joanne in the movie, and the one who did "Turn back, Oh Man"?
@@jacklow9611 Yeah. But this is a different cast. The Mark Taper Forum cast, with Meg Bennett covering for Sonia, Bob Garrett covering for Katie Hanley (the one who sings Day By Day for this production), and Ryan Hilliard covering for Dan Stone.
@@musicaltheatrefan2k226: None of these, except for Joanne, were in the movie, and although in the movie, only one cast member's name was ever mentioned (Robin's), it seemed that Joanne had done the song, "Turn Back, Oh Man", where Jesus' name was mentioned. I was simply asking for confirmation. I've only seen one live performance of Godspell, so I have no idea who played whom in the original Broadway production, but I was aware that one was portraying Jesus, and the other had a dual role as both John the Baptist and Judas Iscariot.
She takes it on a different tune on the verses “He will not always chide…” And “Then bless his holy name”
0:37 that giggle
3:46 ur welcome

What cast is this??
The first replacement cast.
What cast is this?
It's the 2nd New York company (plus original cast member Joanne Jonas). The original cast opened May 17, 1971 and the 2nd company took over in September, 1971 when the original cast went to Los Angeles.
Elizabeth was incredible! Talented and so very sweet !🥰🥰🥰
Beautiful version. This song just gets me in my heart and soul.Great job on the vocals too!
Is the entire show available on video or DVD? This version brings back so many memories.
4:11
Why does Dean's Jeffrey seem so intense compared to other people lol 😭
There once was a very rich man whose land yealded ~heavy crops 😏~
What was that? A play on the phrase "heavy petting?" Was she channeling Mae West?
Loved Elizabeth! 💕💕💕💕
You gave me goose bumps so you did it right !
LOVE take 2021 from Bangladesh

Everyone else: music noises Judas: INTENSE CHICKEN
The girl at 4:35: HITS A HIGH C Edit: It’s Joanne Jonas.
Well done, and thank you!
No...just No. Stop this. I just heard the Godspell version and this just doesn't measure up. I feel like taking that pebble and throwing it at her!
She wrote the song and acted the part but I just saw a much more emotive version with an arguably better voice.
Do you have any friends?
Seems to be the wrong attitude for a Godspell fan! 😂
This is always good, but this tune should be slower. Breathe. Maybe I’m being too picky. Still a good job
Agreed! Way, way too fast and rushed. This is supposed to be contemplative.
Adjust speed in settings to .75
12/19/71 was 5 days before my father died.
Dean Pitchford eventually became a successful songwriter and producer/writer/director. He co-wrote Fame and Footloose, as well as writing the screenplay to the movie Footloose.
He also wrote "Streets Of Gold" for Oliver And Company, as well as the songs for A Goofy Movie and wrote the Footloose musical
❤️❤️❤️❤️Maravilhoso!!!🇧🇷❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is my favorite song from Godspell. Mark Planner is excellent on vocals. The lyrics make me think about my relationship with God. I feel that I don't have enough to offer God but my love and Neverending loyalty. Also, Ryan Hilliard chimes in nicely at 4:25.
I remember being in Godspell when I was 13 (like in the early 2000's) It was so friggin awesome!! 'We Beseech Thee' was my song and I had to share it with a girl, and that jerk sang over me!!
Aww...
Hmmm…. ha! Didn’t learn much from Matthew 🙄🤣
@@Getbackjojo lol
The ghost of Jeffrey (who originally sang this song) will haunt that girl the rest of her life!
