Canada
Приєднався 30 сер 2010
This channel features the wild and often untrammeled outdoors of North Central British Columbia, with some content from farther afield. The format is mostly still images, with occasional video clips, and accompanying background music. I am a long term resident of North Central BC with an interest in the outdoors and outdoor safety. I have explored and written about much of what the area has to offer. As well as more than 550 newspaper and magazine articles, I am the author of four books, 'Outdoor Safety & Survival,' Rocky Mountain Books, 2012; 'The Mountain Knows No Expert,' Dundurn, 2009; 'Outdoor Safety & Survival in British Columbia's Backcountry,' self-published, 2007; and 'Exploring Prince George: A Guide to North Central B.C. Outdoors,' Rocky Mountain Books, 2004 reprinted 2007. Video clips of these works and more can be seen in the Books playlist.
Peak Colour Larches
Larch trees are deciduous conifers that shed their needles in the fall, unlike most other conifers that are evergreen. Like deciduous trees, they turn golden yellow just before losing their needles, usually late September to late October, depending on location and variant. Larch colour displays are legend in the Canadian Rockies, but can be found at lower elevations such as the interior BC city of Prince George. There, some larches start turning in town in early October, whereas those high on the hillside above the Nechako River all peak in late October. Allow one to two hours for the round-trip walk from the North Nechako Road to the Larches. My October 27 round-trip took only 54 minutes, including picture-taking.

First Snows on Sugarbowl Mountain
Переглядів 4914 днів тому
My intent had simply been to climb 600 vertical metres or so to the snowline, just to see where it was and what conditions were like; and, of course, to get some exercise. I first encountered traces of fresh snow at the 2 km mark, and by the time I reached the bench below the chute at 3 km there was already nearly 30 cm of wettish snow. I stopped there for lunch with the intention of turning ar...

The full loop is around ten kilometres long depending on vari...

Seventh Summit In the fall of 2023, a group of Prince George outdoor enthusiasts considered what were, in their view, the seven best mountain peaks in the region. The result was a shortlist of seven popular local summits and the creation of the “Seven Summits Challenge of Northern BC” for the summer of 2024. The list of chosen summits, in order of ascent difficulty was: 1. Erg Mountain: Summit ...

Late September 2024 and the drought of the past two years is over with a mostly wet, windy fall. These images were made in Eskers Provincial Park, a few kilometres west north west of Prince George, in North Central British Columbia, Canada. Eskers is one of the finest mid-sized parks in the Province, and well worth a visit at any time of the year.
New Trail Kinney Lake to Whitehorn Campsite
Переглядів 214Місяць тому
Following the 2021 flood and debris flow disaster and evacuations on the Berg Lake Trail at Mount Robson, BC Parks embarked on a three-year rebuild of the damaged and lost sections of the trail and related infrastructure, as well as significant upgrades such as the new parking lot at the trailhead. Last year saw the trail re-opened to the upgraded Kinney Lake campsite, and this summer (2024) th...
Jasper Wildfire Aftermath

Jasper Fire a Further Wake-Up Call for British Columbia Another town partially lost to wildfire, and this one close to our border Wildfire has been top-of-mind in recent years for Parks Canada and Jasper residents at their annual public forum held each spring in that community. The risk became increasingly apparent when whole mountainsides turned red with mountain pine beetle-killed trees. Howe...
Sugarbowl Sojourn
Переглядів 843 місяці тому
A short overnight on Sugarbowl Mountain, 70 kilometres east of Prince George in British Columbia, Canada. The weather was overly warm ascending the one vertical kilometre trail in the late afternoon. Sunset was forecast to be overcast while sunrise was supposed to be crystal clear, but the reverse proved to be the case. Overall an enjoyable trip, slightly marred by the near peak mosquito season...

Launched in 2011, the channel has grown to over 300 videos by 2024. The best way to scan the channel content for topics and places of possible interest is via the more than forty themed playlists.
June Mountain Snowpack

Despite a very low winter mountain snowpack, our cool, wet spring through May and early June means that the snowpack is still significant above 1,500 metres elevation.
Viking Meadows Falls Revisited
Переглядів 645 місяців тому
This is a companion production to "Snowmelt Alpine to Valley," an ASMR-style video following the spring meltwater from Viking Meadows down to Highway 16. The main objective of this hike/bushwhack was to see Viking Meadows Falls, that I first visited in 2022. That video is linked in the closing credits. The Viking Meadows wetland features old beaver-dammed ponds at the subalpine elevation of 1,4...

This short five-minute ASMR-style video follows spring meltwater from old beaver-dammed ponds in the Viking Meadows at the subalpine elevation of 1,438 m (4,718 ft), cascading down 662 m (2,172 ft) through ancient ESSF and ICH forests to Highway 16 below at 776 m (2,546 ft) elevation. Along the way, there are many small waterfalls, but the most notable are the seasonal (peak spring snowmelt) Vi...

Pope Mountain summit camp... Where else can you watch the sun set over British Columbia's Coast Mountains, and then see it rise seven and a half hours later over the Canadian Rockies? The video opens with images from a day hike on Pope Mountain exactly one month earlier on Earth Day, April 22, 2024. At that time, the ice was almost out on the stunningly beautiful, 66-kilometre long Stuart Lake,...

Amazing wilderness. Breathe in all that fresh mountain air . sighhhh, I miss being in Prince George ! I can't wait to come back. Even if the snow does come early. Thanks for the upload !
Absolutely loved this video, great showcase of the history of the peaks from decades ago until now, keep up the awesome content Mike!
The life cycle of a pine forest, throughout Alberta in the remotest of areas one can always find burned stumps from 50 to 100 years ago.
Hard to see our beautiful national park like that!! But nature will respond and a new cycle will begin. Thanks for this post. I went to Jasper one week before the fires!!!
So sad they will not clean the view but I hope to be wrong. We lost a gem!
Excellent Mike I do have a question. Mark and I snowshoe the old trail which crosses the Whitehorn avalanche chute normally now the question does this new route pose anymore or less avalanche danger than the old trail. Planning for our annual winter foray into Robson
