The Boys of Barr na Sráide
Many people like me consider “The Boys of Barr na Sráide” to be one of the most beautiful and definitive” Irish Ballads of all time and hence my version of this song as I love it so much and it brings back so many happy memories for me.
Written by Sigerson Cifford who grew up in Cahersiveen and taken from “Ballads of a Bogman” it tells the true story of the boys of Cahersiveen Co. Kerry in the early 1900’s who lived on Barr na Sráide (Top Street) and of the old Irish tradition of Wren Day which is still celebrated today in Ireland on 26th December, but purely in a symbolic way these days.
Kerry people are a very resourceful and kindly folk and are fiercely and rightly proud of their own distinctive wonderful landscape, culture and traditions.
I have included in the video some of my personal favourite places in the wonderful County of Kerry which I have come to know and love over many decades.

Constance Markievicz - Song (Irish Anti Treaty Civil War) A song I wrote many years ago whilst sitting on Great Blasket Island beach with the seals one beautiful summers day on a journey from Lissadell House in County Sligo down along the Wild Atlantic Way and into Cork. Ireland has seen many sad periods of history over the centuries none sadder perhaps than when Irish Men and Irish Women, incl...

On Thursday 12th May 1921 during the Irish war of independence and just 5 years “to the day” since the execution of James Connolly and Seán Mac Diarmada in Dublin for their part in the Easter Rising, a group of Black and Tans traveling from Listowel towards Athena arrested four unarmed young Republican men at Gortaglanna Co. Kerry. Although one of the young men, Con Dee, had taken a bullet in t...

My attempt to write a song about the true events of Easter Rising in April 1916 and the Brave Men and Fearless Women who stood against the might of the British Empire to free their country from British rule. All honour to The IRB, The ICA, Cumann na mBan, The young boys of Na Fianna Eireann and those Irish Volenteers who defied Eoin MacNeill's orders to stand down. "And I say to my peoples mast...

Erin Go Bragh
Not many mention conn Dee 😢
He was the young boy who brought the incident to light of course as the only survivor of that terrible day in Kerry so to me he was very important part of the story even thought he survived. God bless them all.
Yes it's a shame so many versions forget him 😢
Haunting , beautiful, deep. As oposed to the utter shite that surrounds us at every tuen these days, even in Cathair Saidhbhín. Sang this at my mam's funeral up here in dirty dublin.and also at her bother's funeral down in the sacred acre., Cill Mhearnóg cemetry. Ciarraí Abú!
I wore my Easter Rising t-shirt on the 24th April as well. The actual anniversary of the rising.

Beautiful Caherciveen
Indeed.
Beautiful ballad voice.
Nice... And nice video
So, "Lissadell 1916"", is it really you who is singing here? I wonder why you didn't use/reveal your real name. By the way, this is easily the best version I've heard, so, thanks for that.
Who is/was the singer? He seems to be reluctant to reveal his identity
Martin Omahoney, Why should you assume that he is "reluctant to reveal his indentity." This man worked with the Irish on London building sites. From that he wrote "From Clare to Here." A lovely but sad song about the heartbreak of forced immigration from Ireland. By your rather ignorant remark it is clear you are among those who have neither knowledge or feeling of such a time. You are at about the time when you may learn it all anew. His name is Ralph McTell. A great writer of songs. A good human being. And an Englisman

Barr na Sraide in Gaelic means The Top of the Street. I love the song and the singer has a great voice.
When I think those leaders of the rising knew they would die do we more than 100 years later realize or appreciate the sacrifice they made?
This is my favourite version of this song.. My grandfather sang it when i was a kid but i didn't really understand it's depth. Love this version

the words: Oh the town it climbed the mountain and looked upon the sea At sleeping time or waking it’s there I long to be To see again those kind old streets where first I grew a man With the Boys of Barr na Sráide who hunted for the wren Now with cudgels stout we roamed about to hunt the dreólín We searched for birds in every furze from Litir to Dooneen We jumped for joy beneath the sky life held no plant or plan And we Boys of Barr na Sráide who hunted for the wren And when the hills were bleeding and the rifles were aflame To the rebel homes of Kerry the Saxon stranger came But the men who beat the Auxies and fought the Black-and-Tans Were once Boys in Barr na Sráide who hunted for the wren So here's a health to them tonight those lads who laughed with me By the lovely Shannon river or the slope at Bean 'a Tí Sean Downing and Batt Andy and the Sheehans Con and Dan Where once Boys of Barr na Sráide who hunted for the wren So here's a health to them tonight for they have gone their way Deep in the heart of London town or over in Broadway And I am left to sing their deeds and praise them while I can Those Boys of Barr na Sráide who hunted for the wren And when the wheels of life runs down and peace comes over me Just lay me down in that old town between the hills and sea And I will sleep in those green fields where first I grew a man With those Boys of Barr na Sráide who hunted for the wren
