Everyone involved seems to have Ethel's best interest at heart, they just have different ideas of how best to make sure she has a good life. Mrs. Crawley doesn't think Ethel has anything to be ashamed of, and therefore doesn't think Ethel should have to leave town. The others all recognize that being an unwed mother is still highly stugmatized and know that Ethel will have the best social and economic future in a place where no one has to know that she was pregnant without a husband.

I could never get over nanny west audacity and ignorance. She would have known who exactly Sybi was and her position in the family regardless of Tom’s former position. She should have known that she would have gotten caught eventually. I love how Cora fired her with class and that Mrs Hughes didn’t question anything.

If only this was real life. Unfortunately most times cops stick together including when it comes down to domestic violence. In my town the cops really didn't care if the woman was being abused. I know personally because my ex was abusive and I was told they "weren't gonna help me because I had a kid with my ex-boyfriend." He broke into my home at 2 AM! pushed my elderly mother into a play pen, and kidnapped our son. He had no rights, no visitation, and no court order. Since we were never married I had full custody in my state. Out of all the abuse cases in town, there's a lot, i know of very few where they did do something. One of the few times was my friend who was being strangled and almost died.

When two of his own daughters had affairs, Robert's attitude was forgiving and understanding. He wanted to shield them from the sort of judgement he applied to Ethel... I doubt he ever figured out how hypocritical that was.... If Ethel's son was a .bastard. so was Edith's daughter. But the social ramifications were very different within his family.

I don't know what's more disturbing. The fact that character believes this would all be fine if the mom had left them alone. Or that the writers seems to be pushing the agenda that the teacher isn't the bad guy. All that dialogue between patient and doctor sounded like pro-teacher, and the dialogue between mom and doctor also sounded pro-teacher (the fact that he started talking to mom again after starting his relationship with the teacher)

Lady Grantham was a bit shocked at what he said and how he said it 🤣🤣🤣🤣. He was more worried about his reputation than hers but the question is HOW DID HE KNOW ABOUT HER BEING A FORMER PROSTITUTE 🤔

I knew two guys(who were both my teachers, but the 1st one left after i finished 9th grade) who were falsely accused of things like that by two sisters who were 12th grade. They never did it, but he(the 2nd one) unfortunately got fired in the middle of the year because of it. And the girls only said it cuz they didn't wanna do their work It was honestly dumb and horrible. And they don't feel bad about it at all. And the 2nd guy was really nice and helped get through the 1st half of my sophomore year when I was in a lot of stress

Btw this was a time in England when most common English treated and viewed the Irish the same way the KKK viewed blacks in the USA. Except it was most English whereas is the USA the KKK were such a minority of whites that they could not prevent civil rights legislation from passing. In the UK the English who thought this way about the Irish were the super majority to the point it caused the troubles later on and they were able to pass laws discriminating against the Irish, even making their language illegal. This was also a division along religious lines because of the Irish being catholic and the English being protestant.

She got caught by the only member of the household who wouldn't have beaten her within an inch of her life or taken it for mistreating Sybie. If Lord Grantham, Thomas, Lord Grantham's valet (cant remember his name atm), or Mary had caught her she'd be dead. Before you discount Mary remember she is an absolutely vicious little pit viper who absolutely adored Sybil, is emotionally raw from grieving Matthew, at her most emotionally unstable right now because of loosing the only 2 people she truly unreservedly loved so close together, Sybie is all that's left of Sybil, and she isnt afraid to get her hands dirty. Even the dowager countess, as frail as she is, would have used her cane on the nanny. Lady Grantham saved her life by not revealing what she had done and to whom she had done it.
