Demonic Possession in History 📚 Booktube Clickbait Title: Shocking Canadian Facts that HIT DIFFERENT
Did Canada have witchcraft trials? What was different about demonic possession New France in the 17th Century? Are millers really evil? Check out this discussion of The Possession of Barbe Hallay: Diabolical Arts and Daily Life in Early Canada by Mairi Cowan to find out more!
In this video I also talk about how fun it is to teach about the complexities of history and explain what we're doing doing those fun research montages they show you in the movies.
I had some problems with the new light reflecting harshly off my glasses so enjoy some very emotive b roll designed to cover that mistake! (Lesson learned!)
In this video I mention:

I can't hear the word mill and not think of 'The Miller's Tale' and what he did thunderously in Absolon's face.

Thank you for watching it! This book was a lot of fun. With your project on colonial history do you have a suggestion on what I should read next?

@JoannaLovesHistoryBooks I guess that depends on what you're interested in. If you haven't read The Devil in the Shape of a Woman by Carol F Karlsen, it's about who was most likely to be accused or make accusations of witchcraft. Our Beloved Kin by Lisa Brooks is a history of King Philip's War, trying to reconstruct an indigenous perspective. I haven't read this yet, but Talking Back: Native Women and the Making of the Early South by Alejandra Dubcovsky sounds good.

After I left grad school, I took a couple of years off from reading non-fiction, especially academic books. When I returned to it, being able to just read a history book without having to underline and take notes because I was looking for very specific information was so refreshing. I had to teach myself how to read a book for grad school, and then had to relearn how to read it for pleasure. This is a great video Joanna! I'm looking forward to watching what you have in store :)

Thanks so much, Matthieu! I don't know if I'm ever going to really recover my ability to read again. So much of what I do is still pillaging the books for lecture content or looking for specific points. Just spending the summer reading mostly Nancy Drew I was still constantly thinking about notes and analysis. Grad school really does hurt your brain.

Hi, Joanna! I'm looking forward to hearing about all bookish things you want to share with us. From an oldie content creator to a newbie, welcome aboard. We're so glad to have you here! Make sure to check out the going BookTube reading event called Historathon. We break up all of history into four periods and read history according to the dates set aside for each quarter. There's a Disc*rd (can't type it out or my message will get automatically blocked) if you're interested in dropping in, chatting about books, and trading recommendations with others.
