I have literally taken my Camry 58 miles beyond 0 miles. Imagine the lawsuits from customers who buy cars that run out of gas before the range gets to 0! Zero is just to ensure you get gas long before you run out. But the more responsible thing to do is to get gas after you get below 1/4 tank. This not only keeps you from running out.... But it also save the fuel pump in the event you might have trash floating in you tank.

Generally most cars will report an empty tank way before it's actually empty, or have a backup one. For the exact reason of helping you get to the gas station even if you miscalculated a bit
