Having trouble with your compost? In this video I go through the 3 things I've learned from over 30 years of composting that have proven key to creating great compost. Size, Balance and Duplication. On our small urban block, space is at a premium, so while I'd love to have large compost bays, I need to do what I can in a small area. In about 2 square metres, we compost all our food waste and pr...

How to easily build an arched Pond Bridge
Переглядів 109 тис.3 роки тому
Do you want to make a bridge over your pond, or maybe one in your garden as a beautiful feature? This is one of the best bang for buck builds I've ever done. It's surprising how easy it is and what you get in return looks absolutely amazing. I'd never built a bridge before, let alone an arched one, so was worried that it was going to be complicated. On the contrary, this was one of those builds...

How to make a Cheap and Easy pallet Wall Garden
😂😂.. no it doesn't
I just finished my bridge thanks to your video! It was really helpful, thank you.
How long does this last before the wood rots out, and how do you get into it for servicing if there are any problems?
That’s a serious video I’m doing the exact same thing
100% wrong. If the soil is kept above the water level by the rock and membrane, how does the soil leach up the water. These are just pots with useless water on the bottom. The soil needs to fill around the water tubes to wick up the water.
It’s interesting that you’re so positive I am wrong, when the evidence is clear that what I’ve done not only works, but works really, really well. I have even dug down to the gravel layer to check a while ago go, this is what I found. Regardless of the matting I put down, soil had leaked down on the edges. Roots from tomatoes and other larger plants had grown right down into the gravel, so clearly, no issues with them finding the water. Also, and this surprised me, the plastic walls had a lot of condensation on them, also aiding the transfer up of the water. I’m sure your way works, but this works too. Currently, all 7 beds are booming with summer crops and they have no trouble riding out multiple hot days without additional watering.
That came out beautiful!
Glad you like it!
Nice
Cheers!
I ALWAYS make models now! They can help so much in figuring things out. I have several acres and models have saved me many, many mistakes! I keep them for YEARS!
So jealous. I dream of one day having half an acre. That would seem so huge to my tiny yard!
Beautiful bridge. Thank you for this video! 🙏🫶
Man, I am so jealous.
Nice tutorial!! Im making a bridge from your video!!! Little bit advice for anyone if you dont know how to make curve use water hose, I have found one in garage where Im working, and it was of the use!! And very nice pond, recently I made one by myself in backyard
Good tip and good luck with bridge build. I'm sure it will be awesome.
Can you list your ingredients please? Chili powder or oil? Detergent like Dawn dish soap? I need help in taking care of my fruit trees. Thank you!
I’m not very scientific with it. Usually I’ll use about a tablespoon of eco friendly liquid dishwashing detergent, the same of garlic infused olive oil (but crushed garlic and any cooking oil would be fine), and chilli powder is usually easiest but you could finely chop chillies - as long as they are hot! Mix it all up and paste it on. You may need to re do it after a week, especially if it rains, but you should see results pretty quick. Good luck!
Best video I've seen in years♡ Thank you so so much! I've been wanting to build a little bridge for my students and couldn't- for the life of me - figure out how to make an arch. Your video fixed this simple design flaw in my mind. Thank you again so much!
What happens in below freezing temperatures, does the self watering portion become one block of ice. If so, does it harm the plastic tank?
We don’t see freezing temperatures here so I don’t know, but it shouldn’t harm the plastic as there is vertical space to expand into - like water freezing in an ice tray.
Well done!!
What’s the height on the gravel and on the soil?
Each tub is 50cm deep, gravel about 10cm, the rest soil.
Love the trellis!
Has anybody done side by side comparisons of wicking beds using rock or scoria in the reservoir vs an all-water reservoir with a raised floor for the soil, layer?
There are lots videos on UA-cam that show people doing different styles. The idea of using ag pipe and rock came from one of these. The more space you have to hold water, the better for water retention, so the longer they'll last without watering.
Really nice job - I need to make a couple for our newly landscaped front lawn (garden) and your simple and efficient approach really appeals to me. Thank you!
Use engine oil from under the bridge it will last for ever,
Ótimo trabalho 👏.
The weed mat may not wick as good as a Geofabric Mat. Did you have any issues here?
A few people have been curious about this but I haven’t had any issues at all. A while ago I dug down and inspected two of the beds. Most of the mat had gone, some roots had worked all the way down to the gravel and moisture was wicking up the sides anyway.
The proof is in the pudding. Looks like you have decent growth there. Excellent video by the way. I’m unsure if I’m more impressed by the raised garden or your video editing skills.
I need to build about 50 of these for a pocket Agrihood I’m developing. In the heat of the southern U.S. I have mastered the drain tile SIP system with waist high planters but have been deciding if coy pond neoprene liners (that I use for myself) are the way to go for this large scale, but this gives me an idea.
Sounds like an awesome project!
Great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I have a question about the material of the container…if it’s plastic, is that safe and not leaking micro plastics?
Good question. Micro plastics in our food system are a huge problem for humanity but these IBC tanks are food grade and very stable, so will last for many many years, especially as they are not in direct sun light.
@@TheBiteSizedGardenthank you I still prefer to use as less plastic possible 😊
I would not expect those pots to defie gravity.
Cool, aren't they!
Found this video today by accident and love it!! Always need more fellow Aussie gardeners in my feed 🤩
Thank you so much. I'll apologise advance for not being very regular with my posts, but hopefully they are worth it when I do!!
What kind of plants have you planted along the rocks area?
There are a few. We had lots of purple iris in our front yard so I re-used a lot of these when planting out the pond. They actually handle being submerged quite well too. Otherwise there are a variety of grasses and water plants sourced from a local native plant nursery.
What is this colour of paint?

Wow! Looks fabulous and beautifully executed. Great to see an Aussie build. Thankyou.😎
Glad you enjoyed it
Mate.. brilliant vid.. straight to the point and easy to follow.. Your a legand cheers👍👍👍
Thanks mate. Appreciate the kind words!
Sorry, two glaring mistakes and I quit watching. Flip flops and putting hand in blades way when cutting. You are not someone I want to learn from. All the best.
It's a wonder I still have all my fingers and toes!
thanks for showing vodeo
My pleasure
Would this design work as.2.2m length bridge over pond?
Yes, I think it’d be fine. I’d probably go for a taller beam so you get more height on the curve.
great ! thank you
No worries!
Nice display, the wooden pot holders are a lot nicer than the black plastic ones I've seen. Your dog reminded us of our dog Cooper. He was a lovely dog, with kind eyes and always a good boy, he was 11 when we lost him three years ago, we still miss him.
Thank you. You’re right, the black ones do the job but you’re always hoping the plants will grow to cover the pots! Sorry to hear about Cooper, sounds like he was a special friend. Our dog Zuki is always looking for offcuts to chew on, I just to need to keep her away from the treated or painted stuff!
Looks awesome!
Thank you!
amazing work
Having rocks in front of the bridge can be hazardous. I would of done something else. Maybe mulch, small rocks, or another plank that would go into the ground..
I wonder how much all those tools were? Jigsaw, miter saw, electric sander, cordless drill. He has been doing jobs like these for years. Someone like me who works behind a desk and rarely picks up a $4 screwdriver, this is challenging. Easy is relative.
Sure, I've been building stuff since I was a kid, so have built up a decent set of tools. Nothing like a workshop though and I've never had any official training. There is nothing technically difficult about this build and I'm sure you could borrow or rent everything I used pretty easily.
Be nice to see an after 2 year video since you've had it for how long now. just curios as to how is the wear on the stain and is it slippery when wet?
I just tagged you in some photos I took of the bridge today.
I am curious as well 😁
Great content, thank you 🙏🏽 Can I please ask a favour of you though? Can you please get rid of the bee hotel hanging on your fence? They are so detrimental to our native bees, they actually do more harm than good. I work at a place that sells them, but I advise people not to buy them.
Thank you. Glad you found it useful. I’m curious about the bee hotel. What makes it bad for native bees?
I’m wanting to make more compost so wanted some autumn leaves. I’ve been eyeing off all the trees losing their leaves at the moment around where I live (Mid North Coast NSW), so this video has been fantastic, thank you! And I was wondering if it’s ok just to pull up to a park or street and start collecting, so this has given me confidence to do that 😊
Glad you found it helpful! Don’t worry, I’ve been collecting leaves for years. Some people look at me strangely but most really appreciate me cleaning up the leaves. Good luck!
@@TheBiteSizedGarden so I went and collected my first autumn leaves, thanks to you! It didn’t take long to fill my bags, and no one came and told me to stop, so I’ll be back to that spot again soon 😊 The leaves are from a maple, so I got plenty of the seed pods as well. I assume you remove them before using the leaves?
@@sharonhoffer3599 Nice one! Maple leaves should be good. Yes, I would remove the seed pods where you can, although they are pretty easy to pull out if they sprout so don't worry too much.
Great tip painting on your garlic/chilli concoction onto the scale! Scale is my one big citrus issue I can’t seem to break. I’m gonna use this method for sure. Thank you 🙏🏽 😊
It’s really worked for me. This year I have about 50 lemons on a 6” high tree. I’ve also started using diatomaceous earth for my indoor plants and I’ve had amazing results against scale. Just don’t buy a 2kg tub like I did, 😂, it only takes a few teaspoons to do the whole house with a duster!
@@TheBiteSizedGarden I’ve got DE in the cupboard, luckily my indoor plants are ok, but it has so many uses. Sounds like you’ve got a lifetime supply 😆
Thank you that was great
Glad you found it helpful!
Looks like a very good job mate! Easy to follow instructions as well. Thanks for the good quality video. Enjoy those herbs. Greg from Cincinnati, Ohio USA
Thanks Greg. All the best to you too mate!
Awesome. One question, why do you build before painting? Figure you could paint them first and they would be fully coated. Not a critique, learned a lot, thank you dude ;-p
The wood is treated pine so I was happy not to paint the interior, except where it is in contact with soil. But you’re right, you could also paint first and assemble later.
A very well-made and super informative video with the added benefit of providing a cut list. I'm gonna make this. thanks.
Good luck. Hope it goes well!
Brilliant, I want to put a curved bridge over my pond but none of the pre-mades are wide enough to work so I will have to build my own. I was wracking my brain thinking I would have to warp the lumber using water and clamps but your way is brilliant! Do you think it would still work with a 16 ft board or would that weaken the span too much?
16 foot is quite a span. I’m not an engineer so couldn’t say for sure. My guess is it would hold the weight but it might be bouncy. You could always go to a lumber yard and see if they’ll put some long beams on a couple of pallets and see how it feels.
Awesome
