Separating milkweed seeds from fiber for spinning into yarn!
This quick video shows my favorite way to separate seeds from fiber out of milkweed pods. It makes it super quick and easy! It also shows a little trick if your fluff ends up mixed. Once it's all separated, it's time for spinning!

    You should not have to tug so hard to pluck an angora. Her coat is not ripe - it should be falling out easily . I would suggest you give her a brush through with a slicker brush or use a shop vac on reverse to blow her coat prior to plucking. This would help loosen the fibre. Use ivomec for fur mites.

    I know this is an old video but on the off chance youre still able to respond; you have another video in which you're collecting milkweed floss and separating the seeds. Would drafting together rabbit fiber with milkweed floss work in the same way? What about blending silk or floss with sheep's wool?

    • @LaurenPalmer-Merrill

      Hi Alex! It would absolutely work the same way with milkweed silk 😊 I feel like this is a great easy method for anything that's super lofty and silky like angora, silk, milkweed, tencel, etc. I DONT think it would work super well with wool. I'm going to card together some wool and milkweed soon, and I can post a follow up video!!

    Does the fur need to be literally plucked or can it be removed by brushing? ETA: Just saw someone else already asked the same question and you answered! Such interesting and beautiful bunnies!

    First , get the dog out of the room. I really don't feel you have a 💕 of these creatures other than ,$$$. Fur, breeding, meat, skins. I have never waited soo long w my Angora. Real danger for fur balls in tummy. I can see this is business for you, you don't have the feel to make a real connection to her. Hold surrounding skin down gently as you pluck. We do brush/comb our Angora weekly. Play + connect emotionally. Yes, house 🐇🐰. Spin the wool, U don't give a hoot about them, having litters die, u didn't know pregnant. Lady, breed dogs, don't harm rabbits.

      She's going for the fiber to make yarn, not the seeds for planting. Last year, I collected mature pods, in hopes of getting both seeds and fiber and found that the fiber was very difficult to process because the seedfloss in the ripe pods had an unacceptable amount of debris. This year, I have harvested unripe pods and will be processing to see if I can improve the fiber yield by not having so much debris when it comes time to card it. I realize I won't be getting useful seed, but the plants have been so fertile that this isn't really a problem. Not being able to get both fiber and seed isn't unusual; this is also the case with flax, although that is a bast fiber -- if it goes to seed, the bast fibers are no longer acceptable quality for making linen.

    very cool ! i am currently doing the same with a different strain of milkweed (showy milkweed--Asclepias speciosa), although mine are not as young. do you find that the younger pods spin better ? and are you blending them with wool or able to spin them straight ? mine can be spun straight, although i don't yet know how the yarn will hold up.

    Nobody worries about sheep wool getting matted, but it gets carded/brushed, and the fuzz gets turned into felt. So could you brush out or card the matted fur before or after removing it? Could you felt it, and would there be a use for that felt?

    • @nikolaimeriadoc696
      @nikolaimeriadoc696 Рік тому

      I have found with Asclepias speciosa that the prep can be what they're doing in the video to get the seeds out of messy fluff. Passing them back and forth or rubbing them together like butter into pastry dough both result in an even prep. For common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) it seems to require blending into wool. From talking with a few other people it sounds as though different strains might spin differently or not at all (swamp milkweed was said to have too short of fibers to bother with). To blend with wool, I layered the wool first onto hand cards, then the rubbed milkweed fluff, then more wool. otherwise the milkweed fluff got caught in the tines.

    Only concern is the husbandry; is there a reason for this breed to be kept in small enclosures w/out a water bottle more space to move and hay to eat 24/7? I only ask since my friend has 3 and I’ve been informed hutches and cages are way too small to keep them since they need room to move binky and all that rabbit stuff. If it’s due to the fur would it work to make a rabbit room laid with towels/ blankets or tile you just vaccum or sweep the poop out that they don’t need to re-ingest. A gross fact I was also informed of 🥲 I could have lived without that one. Just curious in the husbandry aspect. The plucking for sure if was an issue then boxing, nipping or god forbid screams would have occurred. I love to pluck my friends rabbits as their fur is SO soft a bit allergic to the floof though

    Peggy Lee is so sweet. I can tell she really loves and trusts you. If you are able to breed her, I'd buy a baby. I'm looking at Angora breeders hoping to find some that are healthy and sweet tempered whose fluff comes out without an obnoxious, scary clipper. I like brushing bunnies, but not cutting their hair. Regarding the breeding problems, it might be the guy that is the problem. My bunny Lissy rejected everyone until she met Lubby. He knew how to groom her and woo her, so she made him her mate. Maybe you can help the dude out by putting them besides each other, stroking their ears and making them cheek to cheek. That encourages them to groom each other and it will make her like him.

    Please try and be a lot more gentle with your bunny I know you are trying to help her but on her back it looks like there is a bald spot which is bad and reminder bunny are like 20x smaller then us and it looks like you're just yanking out the fur instead of doing that you should either brush her or GENTLY pull it like if you were basically not even touching the rabbit and since bunny's are a lot more smaller then us that also means they are a lot more sensitive then us so just kinda pull on your hair and see how that feels then think about how your bunny feels, and yes I know if it hurts she can just run but judging by how you taking out her fur it seems like she would be used to it plus bunny's don't have a voice so they can't just tell you to stop and also I don't think you should hold your bunny how you do bunny's belly's are extremely sensitive so holding your bunny by the stomach could probably possibly hurt so instead you should lift them up just a little behind the arms and then secure their back feet with your other hand and as I said if pulling out their hair hurts it definitely hurts picking them up by their fur, also the dog is another issue bunnies could have heart attacks just by hearing a dog instead of letting your dog bark and whine in front of the bunny put the dog in another room, please use these tips

    • @puss_tarts4u749

      Ok I'm actually disgusted I feel so sorry for that bunny I'm literally about to cry. The fact that your bunny trust and loves you and you pick out her fur giving her a huge bald spot on her back makes me absolutely disgusted and tells your bunny she can't trust people cause they will use her for people's satisfaction of pulling out hair, the reason she is SHAKING when she puts her foot back under her stomach is cause she is uncomfortable and probably in pain so instead of saying it's not gonna hurt when it probably does probably leave her alone for a little then come back also there is no need to be pulling and holding her foot like that you can clip it just fine when it's where her foot usually is, either stop and use these tips or give your bunny to someone who actually loves their bunny not loves putting their bunny in pain.

    For everyone in the comments, just fyi: the minimum ethical standard for rabbit enclosures it 2 ft x 4 ft, and they should be able to stand in the cage. Others say thats the absolute bare minimum, and that the *real* minimum should be 4ft x 4ft. We can all have our own opinions, I believe shes trying her best and doing right by her rabbits- and I cant accurately see the size of her cages- so i don’t think i can, nor anyone else who isn’t trained, judge and etc. As long as they get time out of the cage in a clean area, im sure they are perfectly fine. So lets all just look at the pretty bunnies!
