Sailing Slap Shot
Приєднався 3 лют 2019
Sailing and skiing videos. Getting older, so more sailing, less skiing. Currently sailing a 1988 Cal 33-2 "Slap Shot" out of Rock Hall, MD on the Chesapeake. Repurposed the name from the Buccaneer 18 "Slap Shot" I raced years back. Boat spent its life in Raritan Bay, NJ, and I sailed her to the Chesapeake in 2024. Hoping to continue moving south when I retire in a few years.
Slap Shot sailing the Chesapeake one more time before end of season
Late October 2024 sailing my Cal 33-2. Sorry it's mostly wind noise, but I wanted to post some sailing videos already. This was actually two trips separated by a week. And yes, I need to fix my bent stanchion so I can connect the starboard lifeline!

Refinishing the Cabin Sole on my 1988 Cal 33-2 Sailboat

Sorry I didn't record the actual work, but here are progress shots of the job. I used a heat gun and triangular scraper to remove the old varnish. That really wasn't as bad as it sounds and worked better than trying to sand the old varnish off. That part took about a day and a half. Then I sanded with 60 grit, then less abrasive grits. Took the rough grit and more effort to get water stains out...

Disregard my lack of editing skills & effort, and believe me, the strange music is better than all the wind noise! Ran 6-8 kts on this maiden voyage heading toward NYC. Thankfully nothing broke.

First time sailing my Cal 33. Keyport, NJ across Raritan Bay towards NYC. Lighter winds picked up to 10-15 and she hummed along from 5-8 kts. A bit more than i planned for maiden voyage and singlehanding, but great fun and no problems. Now, picking up my mooring for the first time w/o crew made for 20 minutes of good fun for anyone who might have been watching.
Sailing my Precision 18 - Gusty Day at Nockamixon

Sailing on a gorgeous and gusty September day. First time sailing this boat with a reef in the mailsail. With the (100%) jib out, boat was well balanced in these winds. Merged a few short videos, but no actual editing (sorry). Added some music- song "Clover" from my son's band, Food Truck. foodtruck.bandcamp.com/ Support them please so he makes enough money to move out. ;)
Precision 18 Sailing Lake Nockamixon under New Bimini Top! - July 2021

Enjoying my new bargain bimini top. $150 bimini from Amazon and $50 slide rails. Super comfy to be out of the sun on the scorcher days. Slides completely out of the way when not in use. Only mod was cutting 3" off the main posts, and re-riveting the end connectors.

First video sailing my 1995 Precision 18, new to me this spring. Boat needed a couple notable fiberglass repairs, which are now complete, but was otherwise in superb condition for its age. I downsized after sailing 22-23 footers the past 10 years. Prior to that sailed/raced a Buccaneer 18. This boat is an excellent compromise of comfort, performance, and trailerability. Will look to make some m...

A fellow Rock Hall'er! Motoring under the Mid-Bay bridge is reasonable - the wind is anything but predictable under it. : )
Nice. Was part of that yesterday?
Looks lovely! Did you remove all of the flooring or did you refinish it in place? I am considering refinishing the main cabin in my Sundowner Tug 30, but could not remove the flooring without dismantling the cabinetry. The flooring also has some shrinkage gaps between planks that I don’t how to address. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Other than a couple of removable panels, it was left in place. The scraping with heat gun was key. A multitool with small triangular sanding pad got into the spaces I couldn't with the orbital sander. I didn't have any shrinkage issues thankfully, but that does remind me of that good Seinfeld episode! Good luck!
nice job
is it a laminate floor ie teak and holly on plywood?
Yes it's marine plywood with a teak and holly veneer. Stuff that's like $500/sheet or so I've heard. I hit one water stain a little too hard with the sander and it went through the veneer, but ehh it still looks much better than before.
Yeah 60 grit is pretty aggressive which is why I asked. I would probably have gone with 120+ The clear finish on my sole is beginning to fail so I am contemplating how best to remove it. I want to use heat and the light sanding Nice job on yours
@@Jackanory222 Yeah agree the 60 was aggressive, but I started with 120 before that and it wasn't cutting it. I wish you well on your project. It's a PITA but when you can be proud of the results it's all worth it. Rest of boat was in great shape, and now it looks almost like a new boat at 35 years.
Looks great, nice job.
Nice! Looks similar to mine, I've got a 1973. Keep posting :)
Hauling on Nock! Can you share the brand of slide rails? The Trailer Sailor site was rehosted and the earlier link you shared is no longer valid. Thanks!
I still have the full write-up needed, if you want more info. Carver 24" Sliding Tracks, were $49
Solo sailing? Cool! I'd love to try but can't get over docking by myself. Subbed!
She’s beautiful 😍
Thank you
Amazon does not have the 36 H only the 46 h was your directions maybe a typo or did amazon / Seamander stop making a 36 ... any suggestion
Just checked, still selling the Seamander 36". www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0852VX9RG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1&psc=1 Make sure to get the 54-60" width, not the wider one.
@@sailingslapshot You probably meant the 61-66'" width
@@LttlewoodsDoc You are correct. I just double-checked my Amazon order and I had first gotten the smaller one and it wasn't wide enough. Returned it and got the 61-66" one, which worked perfectly after shortening the base pole (height) about 3". Thanks
That was a lot of heeling.

We have a 1987 precision 18. Awesome boat we love it
Awesome video. We love that Bimini. It looks like it really improves the quality of life on board. Thanks for posting
Thanks for the note! Found your channel recently and am a subscriber. You made some great videos during your time on the Chesapeake. That's just an hour or so from me here in eastern PA and I hope to get the P-18 out there. Your videos inspired me to do that, because that can be some serious water at times, and I don't think I'd otherwise have attempted it. Been out there on a friend's 30-footer and it can get dicey. I'm thinking you might be landlocked a bit there now but hope you find yourself back on the water and post more vids. ps- I documented the bimini job on trailersailer. I'm a DYI'er and didn't want to shell out $1k for a bimini. With Amazon parts I did it for under $200. Yes the bimini is great at times and gets my wife out more often with me. Details: forum.trailersailor.com/post.php?id=1515687 Take care.
The Chesapeake is a great place to sail There are countless anchorages countless towns to visit and everything is really close. You can definitely get some weather on the bay there is no doubt. But you’ll be fine as long as you have all of your reefing together. We only have one reef point in the main and without any question it needs a second Reef point. A Furler would be nice too. All in good time. We have been talking about a Bimini for a good while now but I have been intimidated to tackle the project. We will check out the link that you sent I am sure that will help. Thank you for all of your positive feedback regarding our channel. Thanks again
First boat i looked at was a P23 at nockamixon
Biminis dont leave the dock without one
Thanks for the video. Looking to purchase in the 18-22' range for Spruce Run and Nockamixon. Let me know if you see anything.
Can you add links to the mods?
Here ya go... forum.trailersailor.com/post.php?id=1515687
Do you find the P18 tender/handful in such conditions? What were the winds, were you reefed?
Looking back at the recorded weather that day, it says 12-23mph, and that sounds about right. But yeah, gusty, not much consistency, so just keep working that mainsheet. No reef- full main and jib (100% jib). Boat is a bit tender unlike my last two (Lockley Newport 23 and Catalina 22), but I find it very easy to handle and it's very responsive and well balanced- can control tiller with fingertips. Did reef the main once since then when winds were upper teens to near 30, had jib up, boat handled great.
Nice job on the Bimini
Nice to meet you yesterday. Hope to see you to the lake soon. Chris
Good to meet you too. Sad time, hauling the boat out this weekend. Have a couple projects I might try to do before winter, but may wait til spring. Replace leaky cockpit drains with thru-hull fittings, and fix new leak coming in cabin sole where the centerboard has pushed up and cracked the floor. (was that way when I got it, but now starting to leak) See ya next season.
nice video - I really like the music!
Nice video!
