Now I feel really old. I'm a Denaby lad, but that was the Mexborough of my childhood.

Thank you for these photos. I was raised in Surrey, but I spent many summers in Mexborough, visiting my Dad's Auntie and Uncle in late 1940s and early 1950s. Their home was on the High Street where the trams went by. I remember sooty air and grey sheets on the line. Uncle Charlie worked in the mines and on weekends he worked at the cinema across the street - free seats for me! He also had pigeons. Auntie Elsie was the best cook around - how she produced such wonderful cakes, Yorkshire Pudding, etc. all on a vintage stove was miraculous. I loved my times there eating ice-lollies (forbidden by my Mum!). Such wonderful memories of the best people around. Thanks for sharing.

I showed this to my english classes at Mex school and they had to guess where the pics were taken. They loved it. In fact the head came in for a quick visit and stayed for the full lesson

Oh, the memories. I was brung up on Harlington Lane and I remember Robinson's cows coming along to the fields. Christine grew up on Lorna Road and we met at Mexborough Grammar. My Dad worked Manvers while Christine's Dad was on the commercial printing side at the Times Office. My Godmother was manageress at Greville and Stuart in the town. My Grandad's 'Garden' was on the corner of Doncaster Road and Adwick Road where the Doctors and Police Station are now.

Why the hell you would choose this music to go with a fire in the main drag is beyond me.

More Soul in the old photos !! the shop canopys are inviting and make all the difference, the newer photos are of a cold uninviting almost squalid village all shuttered up from thieves due to the screwed up economy the Politicians have created as a result of over taxing shops and screwing businesses. the Dire Straights is great tho
