      Hi there! About 70% of the art in the print and play is final. The rest is still being worked on. All the art that is showing in the campaign itself will be finalized, but it'll take us a few more months to finish everything.

    I am in my 5th iteration of my card game atm. The first version took me 1 year to make and it was so bad that me and my testers laught in pain. the 2nd version was better, but still not good and so on. Even the 4th version - while working well - was just not much fun to play. Sometimes card games just don't work out as intended. There is just way to much stuff that has to work in harmony.

    Just came across this game today and watched the gameplay video and this video. I must say, your approach to the design of this game is incredibly refreshing. You are not just trying to make a light, simple card game but something deep and rewarding. More importantly, you are trying to deeply embed the story and world into your game, something I find often missing from modern card games. Wormwood reminds me of FFG's LCGs, all games with the theme heavily tied in to deep mechanics.

    Hey! I've tried Wormwood on TTS and I think you did an awesome job! I do feel there's room for improvement, though. This is not my full opinion on the game, just a short list of the things I've noticed. 1) I feel like factions are not well characterized, and it makes it hard to get immersed in the game. One way card games signpost factions and their identities (like Magic or Netrunner, as you've mentioned in another video) is to use colors and story elements that are unique to that faction. For example, a card like "Account Siphon" from Netrunner is so obviously criminal because it has been color-coded that way, and it abides to that faction identity both inside and outside of the game. You cards do a disservise to the world you built by being too generic and overlapping with cards in another factions (for example, Field Medics and Splicing medics are from different factions but they surely don't feel that way) 2) I believe the game would benefit greatly by having deckbuilding. Being able to personalize decks adds a lot of replayabilty that this game doesn't grant in this form. Sure, the game feels different because no deck is allowed to have duplicates of any of the 30 cards, but I think that would get stale nonetheless. Magic and Netrunner are/were successful because they allowed you to think about the game even outside of your LGS, formulating new tactics around cards that you hadn't thought would be a good fit until you actually playtested your deck. I've spent countless hours theorycrafting decks, many more then I've actually played. Wormwood (outside of the flavor issues I've described above) can and will get stale fast. I've got other gripes (even with the rules) but i'm short on time so I guess this will do :P. Still appreciate the game and looking forward to its release in final form!

    • @damonstea
      @damonstea 29 днів тому

      Thanks for taking the time to comment, join the discord to continue giving feedback! You can find an invite on our website. Most people find the factions to be quite distinct. Each one has 30 unique cards, plus a faction leader power. We do have deckbuilding rules if that is something people wish to do. We have balanced all the decks against each other and can't guarantee that there are no infinite loops or other issue if decks are customized (although so far we haven't found any). Though you may be surprised at just how much variety a 30 card deck (plus echoes) will give you. During a game it is rare to draw through more than 1/3rd of the deck, and that paired with the different interactions between factions provides a huge amount of variety and replayability.

      @@damonstea I can't speak on behalf of other people, and I hope my opinion doesn't assume that! I support everyone that is content with the state of Wormwood and that will buy the game once it hits the (internet) shelves! I hope that sharing my vision of the game might help you and other people build upon the great system that you are developing. I believe in the project, otherwise I wouldn't be rambling about it! I'll also add that I have little experience in the design of card or boardgames, and even less experience with the actual development. 1. My concerns around flavor remains untouched. For example, unless someone was interested in the lore of the game, it would be hard to understand why SHOCK TROOPS, INQUISITORS and GRAFTGUARD, or BETRAYAL, DEFECTION and CONSCRIPTION are unique to that factions identity. How are MANDATORY STIMS different from the BATTLE STIMS? How do the GENEFORGE NURSES compare to another faction's GENEFORGE? SENTINELS and HELLCATS? TALENT HACK and MINDJACK? DUSTMEN and CRUSTCRACKER GANG? In other games, every card has a reason to be inside its faction, combining mechanics, colors and flavor. For example, in magic, CONDEMN is a removal card that puts target creature on the bottom of a deck and makes its controller gain life. It's a card that behaves like a white card (lifegain is usually associated to white) and the image uses white as it's main color to describe the effect the spell is having on the creature. Everybody can tell that card is white, and every body understands what white is about. Another example, coming from Netrunner, would be the card "Snare!". In this case, the color doesn't match the identity of the faction, but the flavor is so obviously Jinteki-like that nobody would assume it came from any other faction. Trapping the opponent and dealing net damage is this faction's bread and butter, and its elegant design is a signpost for what Jinteki wants to achieve as a whole. Wormwood's factions feel too samey because they share many themes, units, words and lore. 2. 10 factions is a whole lot, and trying every combination multiple times (even with more then 2 players) will take dozens of games, if not hundreds. However, players of Magic, Yugioh, Netrunner, and Pokemon are drawn not only to their enjoyable gameplay but also to their scalability. Every 3 months a new Magic expansion comes out, with 230+ new cards (not including alternate art styles and foils). Netrunner used to release 60-card packs every once in a while (usually 6 in a year) and a full box containing new cards for one runner and one corp faction every year. People spend countless hours theorycrafting new decks even before they are released because they enhance the already pre-existing experience the system created by allowing you to tinker and experiment. Wormwood isn't designed around that, and that could hurt the game's future. I'll be sure to join discord and keep looking forward to the full release!

    I don't understand this game. I've played it 3 times & I've watched these videos but it looks and feels like no decisions matter - there's no deception since you can't manipulate where you have the echoes, the said echoes are just always swarming into your hand, attacking is not a decision it just happens & if you get an echo by combat it's like... yay I did a thing(?), not getting lucky in getting any amount of units is a death sentence. Also negotiation in this game (even in this high negotiation game) is "don't attack me because don't attack me". Also 'luck' & getting lucky is mentioned awfully a lot for what I think should be a skill game. Like, what am I missing. Slight rage post but I am clueless what this game is supposed to be and what's worse, the world is extremely interesting. But the explanation of the echoes being a prized possession that factions rival over while in game you are literally overflowing with them is real dissonance inducing.

    • @damonstea
      @damonstea Місяць тому

      Hey there, I'm sorry you feel that way! There's definitely luck involved, (just like with any card game), but it's like Magic in that it takes some time to see the strategies and synergies in each deck. To you concern about echoes, I would suggest forging as many as possible. New players are often afraid of forging echoes, but it's the best way to give you more choices in your hand and ensure that if someone hits your hand, it isn't completely full of echoes they will steal! Echoes are valuable in the lore, definitely, but they are not a scarce resource. You could think of it more as an arms race. To your concern about negotiation- I agree we haven't posted a play through so far that shows the potential of this aspect of the game. We often trade powers between ourselves to take down runaway leaders, and it's a fun aspect of the game once you've played a bunch and get used to the flow of the game. Even if Wormwood doesn't turn out to be your taste, I appreciate you taking a look! And I'm hoping to write a TTRPG in the future, perhaps that way you can enjoy the world in a different format.

    • @linase.8566
      @linase.8566 Місяць тому

      @@damonstea 2 things: 1) "New players are often afraid of forging echoes" That's the thing - None of us had any reservations about not forging echoes. But the issue is that there is no option to NOT play them. Through the 3 games that we did we just got into a rhythm of nobody being able to impact the other person in any way. You score your echoes, the opponent says "cool" & then scores out his own echoes because nobody has anything. Then somebody has a unit & everybody thinks "cool I guess" and proceeds to not be able to do anything about it. We were all trying to find something that started the interaction but we just kept finding more echoes that we needed to throw out. And then the game ends because you just tried to get to the cards that do something... At the end, we all felt like there were no meaningful decisions made, you just play out the game & it happens. 2) Every card is cool, interesting & has a lot of happening in the art. And that's the end of that sentence. I had countless moments with my playmates of all of us just looking at a card or showing it, it's mechanics & thinking "oh that's interesting". But it is self-contained & didn't feel like it had anything else going for it except itself. We all agreed to describe the game as "Lots of cool mechanics without interaction"

One thing that really struck me about what you were saying was 'finding the hope' in every faction - I love that philosophy. And when you were describing the religious faction, it warmed my heart that you didn't just paint them all as bloodthirsty zealots out for a witchhunt. I'm a lifelong Catholic and its an all too common depiction of religious institutions as all evil (trust me, I know there can be evil done by them) so I'm very much looking forward to a depiction of what good they can bring as well, even if its just in a 'silly' little game (though like my fantasy and sci-fi books, I can't really call any games silly unless they want to be).

      Thank you! One of the most interesting playtests we ever had was with someone who we found out was a pastor after playing. Religion is one of the most universal and human experiences, and because this is a game about people it's a big part of the world of Wormwood.

    I would play the crap out of this on BGA. I absolutely hate TTS though. Nice to see so much faction variety.

      I'm not sure if BGA will accept an unpublished game, but I'll look into it!

      @@damonstea Even if just two factions were available, the rules enforcement would make it a lot easier to learn and there would be tons of useful data for balancing with future expansions. That said, I know BGA implementation is a lot more difficult than TTS :)

    Good fun to watch this one! Just fyi, the card at 29:20 has a typo, missing a 'is' after 'while it'

    Sir, it's great listening to you and the process you've been going through. I will next make sure to read the accompanying lore book, which seems great to immerse players even more :)

      @@damonstea So, my 6-year old and I printed some of the cards and gave it a go last night :). It was a great time and both of us really enjoyed diving in this universe. I'd like to point one card though that struck as a bit out of sync with the rest. This was the 'Planet Plague'... Although the image is striking and evocative, it feels like it leans too much in the gore/horror, which no other card has. I know this is very much personal and maybe subjective, but I would replace that picture. Again though, no other comment on any of the other cards. Love it!

    I really like this "behind the scene" type of videos where you talk about game and factions.

    Hey, this looks incredible. However, one quick question: Is any of the art here AI generated or AI assisted? How much of this is unique and made by an artists vs AI?

    • @damonstea
      @damonstea Місяць тому

      Hi there! We have worked with 32 artists so far, (including amazing artists like Benedick Bana, Leon Tukker, and Dofresh) and we are still licensing and commissioning work. Much of the art we licensed we found long before AI art was even a thing, but some of the art was preconceived using AI and then painted over. It's been an amazing brainstorming tool for us and allowed us to give artists specific direction without micromanaging their work. If you want to know more about how it was used and how we have worked with artists I would encourage you to join our Discord, where we have discussed this issue before! I just want to play something like android netrunner without having to get used to a bunch of dumb naming conventions. Was this game an inspiration? The artwork for this is also amazing.

      Weirdly, I played Netrunner AFTER starting the design of Wormwood. But once I discovered Netrunner it certainly helped me smooth out some rough edges. Definitely the jargon in Netrunner increased the barrier to entry, and I've found that it's a lot easier for players unfamiliar with card gaming to get into Wormwood.
