Applying a textured look to a table top
Переглядів 2115 років тому
I painted a desk with Dixie Belle Paint and wanted a textured look on the top so I applied a technique called "Frottage" (frôˈtäZH). I rolled on paint and while the paint was still wet I pressed crumpled wax paper into it and then pulled it off to create the texture look. Here's a quick video demo. ladonsrecreations

    Why is it some say use damp and some say use a totally dry applicator?

    • @LaDonsReCreations
      @LaDonsReCreations Місяць тому

      @nataliesimon9670 when Gator Hide first came out the instructions were to use a dry applicator which helps when applying Gator Hide to darker surfaces. Later on some of us started trying it with a damp applicator; however, over a dark surface it could leave a cloudy appearance when dry. When applying with a damp applicator I barely mist my applicator with water and if there is a cloudy after-effect I use a 0000 steel wool to lightly buff it out. AJ's Vintage Designs has done 3 great Gator Hide videos that I would recommend. Hope this helps ua-cam.com/video/50oCjouNe08/v-deo.html facebook.com/watch/live/?v=514631262587481&external_log_id=94caa5d4aa54b05896fe897b167cb69f facebook.com/watch/?v=1870063623033259&external_log_id=34afa7f20d10b5b569f340a50d11dffd&q=dixie%20belle%20paint%20company%20ajs%20vintage%20design%20gator%20hide

    @LaDonsReCreations I love your technique! How long do I need to wait after applying the dixie bell clear coat to put on the dark wax?

    • @LaDonsReCreations
      @LaDonsReCreations 4 місяці тому

      Hi @jeneratorp! Thank you! I usually wait about 24 hours for the clear coat to be good and dry before I put on the dark wax. Hope this helps!

    I tried it and hated it. I kept seeing wet. And then dry. I saw more apply with dry sponge, it looked horrible thick in places lumps, streaks.. had three pieces and I did all at once, Big mistake…. Used 0000 steel wool took forever but did help some. I have transfers on all three pieces and didn’t want to sand them off. Got it as good as I could get without taking the black wax I did over prime color, finally just put another layer of clear was on top

    Is gator hide a must on Dixie Belle paint?

    • @LaDonsReCreations
      @LaDonsReCreations Рік тому

      No, Gator Hide is not a must with Dixie Belle Paint. Dixie Belle paint has a built in sealer in it. Gator Hide is a water repellent, water resistant top coat so I use it on pieces where I want extra protection.

    Did you use slick stick on the pot that was cracked looking that you painted blue? Some pots are ceramic and super shiny. Can you paint those too? Thank you so much

    • @LaDonsReCreations
      @LaDonsReCreations 2 роки тому

      I only used slick stick on the glass lantern before painting it with Coffee Bean and Sea Glass. The urn pot that I painted blue was originally rough so I didn't need slick stick for it. I just pounced crackle on the existing finish before painting it blue. For anything that has a shiny existing finish it's best to paint it with Slick Stick first so it will be primed for paint. Hope this helps!

    I love these ideas. The tongue and groove pieces of wood sold separately or just have to use a regular piece of wood?

    • @LaDonsReCreations
      @LaDonsReCreations 2 роки тому

      Yes the tongue and groove pieces of wood are sold separately; however, my husband built a cabinet with them so he bought a bundle and these were left over pieces. I just can't throw any wood away lol! But this technique will work on any piece of wood, it doesn't have to be tongue and groove.

    How long do Gator Hide and DB topcoat need to dry/cure before actually using the piece? I'm working on a coffee table and not sure how long before I can actually use it. I haven't been able to find this information. I see that DB paint takes 30 days, so is it the same time for the topcoats?

    do you warm the wax up because the dixie bell I have in the tin will not paint on like that. it is almost as stiff as candle wax.

    • @LaDonsReCreations
      @LaDonsReCreations 7 років тому

      Hi Tin Roof Relics! For this piece I used the new softer, creamer wax that Dixie Belle came out with I think it was in February of this year. The old wax was hard so I'm thinking if you scoop out a little of your wax and put a few drops of mineral spirits in it and mix it up that will soften it. Also, when I've left my harder wax in the garage (I'm in Texas) it tends to soften up that way too. Hope this helps?
