Winterize your Roadtrek 190V
This is how I've been winterizing my 2006 Roadtrek 190V van for cold New England winters over the past 5 years. These 12 steps should help you visualize how to do it yourself. It should only take you an hour.

Video Trail Guide - Skatutakee and Thumb Mountains
Переглядів 88Місяць тому
This is a practical video guide to a five mile loop up Thumb mountain over to Skatutakee Mountain via the Hariskat, Thumbs Down, and Thumbs Up trails. It's fall in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire and the colors are beautiful. I finish off the 5 mile hike with a homemade grilled cheese sandwich in the 2006 Roadtrak 190 Versatile. Yum!
Fall Water Fall(s)

I spent the weekend in my Roadtrek 190 Versatile for fall colors in New Hampshire and Maine. I visited the Basin in Franconia Notch State Park, spent the night on the shore of Mooselookmeguntic Lake, and visited Smalls Falls and Big Falls in the Rangeley Lakes Region. The colors were amazing and the falls were running nicely after a week of rain.

I've read limited information about this 3-day paddle trip with the same start/finish point and formatted this as a guide for those interested in paddling it. This two-pager is the best guide I found and used it for my planning. It's from the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands - untamedmainer.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Moose-River-Bow-Loop-Holeb.pdf Maine Trail Finder is also a great resource:...
Winter Storm Changes Plans

My plan was to spend the weekend in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont to do some fat biking at the Kingdom trails. I cleaned off the 4x4 Roadtrek 190V and headed north. The first clue of what was in store was the flashing highway sign which said, "Winter Storm Warning." They weren't kidding. Instagram: OldManofNewEngland

Whitewater in Massachusetts? Deerfield River Whitewater Rafting!
do you think it is possible to turn the 2nd set of seats to swivel captains seats. I am looking at a 2011 Chevy Airstream Avenue and they have that and seem the same size as the raod trek but also just found a versatile and I cannot decide, but the second set of seats don't see to look that comfortable I am worried.
spray a little water on your beans to avoid messy grind
Looked like a cool trip. I have a brother who lives in Indian Lake and when visiting there this summer he took me to the Racquet falls. We also kayak fished Long Pond. Thanks for sharing.
Isn’t it an amazing place? It’s my third time paddling in this area. I just love it! Thanks for watching, Barry!
Nice video dude thanks for sharing. I like the editing choice of jumping into a gear review in the midst.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, @broadsidebarnes. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for the thorough video. I would like to make a few suggestions. First, I don't think that it's important to open all of the faucets to relive the pressure before taking out the anode rod. If you open the pressure release valve at the top of the exterior water heater area, that will relieve the pressure and allow the water to drain from the water heater quickly, but not explosively. It also avoids having the water come out in a glug-glug-glug fashion as was shown in the video. The faster speed of the water would help in getting the gunk out of the water heater while draining. Secondly, I don't think you need to put the antifreeze in both the interior and exterior tanks. I believe putting in just the exterior and running in Summer mode is sufficient. Lastly, I know that Robert Ambrose in the Roadtrek Facebook group is a big advocate of putting and leaving 2 gallons of antifreeze in the black tank over the winter to help decrud the black tank sensors. I know in my 05V190 I have installed a bypass valve in the area of the summer/winter handle so that I avoid putting any antifreeze in the tanks and when in bypass, it sucks the antifreeze directly out of the jug. I can winterize with about 1 1/2 gallons of antifreeze (plus 2 gallons for the black tank). P.S. Thanks for the trick of knowing if the handle is in summer or winter mode. I'm going start using that as I always forget.
Great input, @DealHunter! Thanks for the additional tips!
Excellent share
Thanks Dave!

Please respond to my comment, I’ve been a fan for YEARS and never receive a comment back 😢
Such a lack of attention in my part. 😂
Wow! Thanks for sharing Tim. I will have to ride my bike in your beautiful woods one day for sure. And I love your 18 carat gold plated van, she’s a beauty! Hope you are well my friend.
Thanks, Fabeman! You’re always welcome over here! Winter fat bike season is just around the corner.
I have 2006 Chevy 4x4 Roadtrek 190 Popular in Alaska. I will being taking videos next year (2025) as I explore the interior.
Awesome! I can’t wait to see them. Have fun!
Great video, these are great hacks. Thanks for sharing. On the Thermocell... I bought several of the good ones in the past from Bass Pro and they worked great for a little while and then it just stopped working. Are they still working for you ?
Hey Papasight - I’ve got two that use the fuel cartridge like in the video and I also bought a rechargeable this spring. All are working. My original is 4 or 5 years old and even has a bit of rust on the top plate.
This was actually a very informative video. Good job 👍🏻
Glad you think so!
Very nice
Any tips for increasing stability with the TC16? I bought it for my 13 year old son and I to get out on the water with. I initially inflated it to 9.5psi and we dumped it over before we even got away from the dock. I thought maybe the pressure was too high for our weight so I dropped it to 7.2psi. same thing. The only way we were able to use it was sitting on the floor like a kayak. I bought it based on the reviews of how stable it is, but now after one hour in the water I'm already considering returning it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Calder - definitely inflate it to the rated 10 PSI. This is imperative to the rigidity of the boat. The drop stitch construction won’t work without it.
I'll go ahead and put it at the full 10psi next time. After getting home it occurred to me that the balance issue was really a trimming issue. I was in the back seat at 355lb and my son was in the front at 130lb. I'm going to order the middle seat and move into that position. Pretty sure that'll solve the issue. Thanks for the reply.
You can also try paddling the boat backwards. It’s symmetrical. It will put you closer to the center. As long as your son’s legs aren’t too long, he should be comfortable in front.
Hi, what's it like 3yrs later ?
Great question. It’s still HEAVY. I find myself rarely packing it in my van and instead use my Kevlar Wenonah for all of my paddling. The downside is that I can’t paddle when I take out the van. It’s not fun to paddle solo and I typically use the van solo without my wife. I’m not selling it any time soon…but it may happen.
Can we put solar on the road track? It is so low to the ground what can be done to get a little more clearance?
I've seen people add solar to their Roadtrek. I don't have it myself. I've found that the generator is fine for topping off the batteries when necessary. My Roadtrek has a lift kit with the 4WD. I've seen others that have lifted theirs, but I'm not sure of the specifics. I get a lot of information from the Roadtrek Chevy Owner's Facebook page. It's a wealth of information!
I’m considering purchasing a 2006 2010 Widebody Rd. track. Very low mileage and well maintained. I don’t think they’ve done hardly anything in the way of mods. there were two owners and one hardly traveled in it at all and the current owner travel seriously I plan to be a female solo RVer soon. Do you have any pros or cons or thoughts for me before I purchase?
The Roadtrek has some complex systems. In addition to having the Chevy checked by a mechanic, you may want to have an RV mechanic check the camper systems - electrical, water and waste, fridge, heater, etc.
How long did that portage/ carry take you in total with the multiple trips?
It was 1.3 miles, so under 3.9 to walk it three times. We stopped to talk at the ranger station, then walked up to the falls, so we were on land for over two hours. I’d say about an hour and a half with no stops. The carry route goes UP and down a ridge which made it particularly grueling 😩.
Great video, thanks for sharing! Whatcha paddling?
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it. We’re paddling a Wenonah Minnesota II. Love it!
I have an Outcast Stealth Pro inflatable. It's 35 pounds and 57" wide. I think I'll buy one of these carts to transport it. Thanks for the video.
Glad it was helpful, John.
I was surprised to see the skeg not used. Helps with taking the brunt of bottom abrasion and also makes steering much easier and less physical effort. All of us know how to paddle my friend. hahaha!
Agreed! It just kills me to put a skeg on my canoe. I’m convinced I can overcome anything with the proper paddling. If I were to go out for a few days on this, in open water, I think it would be a good idea! 😉 Thanks for watching!
Could drop a rowing outrigger kit in there?
I’m not sure, Susan. I’ve never used one.
Wanted to give a heads-up. It appears an influencer has reuploaded part of this video on Amazon. Unsure if you gave them permission however they earn commission off the sales.
Thanks for the tip, Archer.

why no one is falling out? I don't understand. No one is holding with their hands and they're sitting on the edge and not really experienced. Does it look more difficult than it is?
It's not nearly as difficult as it may seem. ;-)

Catchy isn’t it? It’s something from Apple iMovie.
😢when Wenonah's first came out, I tested several. I settled on the Sundowner, and I was never disappointed. I put Kevlar pads on both ends, mainly because my son and I did extensive BWCA canoe trips. From family weekends on the St.Croix river, to the wilds of Canada, it has held up well. I chose the tractor seats with the front being a slider, and aluminum gun'lls. For durabablity sake...that also paid off. After all these years (I'm now 72), I passed it onto my son and his family. In 1982 I bought my second Sundowner before tgey discontinued the model. That went to my daughter and her family. I bought in 84 a Old Town Northern Light kevlar solo, which became my "pick up truck" for wilderness hunting, because of the amount of weight it could handle, and still be light and manuverable. I still have it also. I bought 4 Bell Magic kevlar solos, for family solo weekend trips....and all are in my families possesion, and in great shape ... and still regulary used..... I remember being laughed at for buying my first "potatochip" canoe. But the laughs on them now after all these years. I live next to the Canadian border, and next to the BWCA, and the kevlar canoes are now the normal choice of trippers. I have 2 aluminum 18's I keep at my lake landing for visitors and their kids to use.... the best thing I ever did for my kids and grandkids, was to get them out on the water canoeing, fishing, snowshoing, skiing, dog sledding and do on. As I age, I smile and watch more than go out myself (health). Was ut expensive to buy all the gear? Yep! But the investment lives on. Peace to you all from the border lakes country.......
What a great story. Thanks for sharing it. I’ll see you on the water!!

Just now buying 2006 4x4 like yours in Alaska. Your tips are very helpful for my adventures up here.
Very exciting! I’m glad I could be of help.
Buying a 2006 4x4 Popular this June for road trips around Alaska & possibly lower 48 in the fall & winter.
Good video of some of the notable transitions on this trip; it's an excellent one for novice canoe-campers with the exception of the potential for sometimes significant wind on the 'ponds'. Did this last month, Monday/Tuesday before Memorial weekend, first time for a spring visit after at least 2 (maybe three?) previous all in late fall. As another poster mentioned, almost empty of other people, almost zero mosquitos and black flies out but not biting; water was high enough that the outflows on the ponds weren't particularly bony. Glorious weather and conditions. For reference, in a 60ish# Mad River canoe, solo paddler and gear, I ran all the river rips without issue; no additional carries required beyond the two mandatory ones. Scouting is a good idea and easy to do, from the water above the ledges at Mosquito/Camel/Spenser, and walking around to plan the Attean sections. All of my trips have been in two days, with early starts and steady paddling. As a caution, both the last two have involved crossing Attean with serious gusting wind, once on the first day with a constant headwind getting from the launch to the portage between the ponds and this May crossing back from the Moose to the outflow and take-out with a mixed headwind and beam wind/chop that might make some parties decide to bivy for the afternoon and finish the next morning. Highly enjoyable.
So you parked between wood pond and attean lake on the moose river?
Yes. Just before the gated road. The water was high so we could easily paddle into the pond from the river. I believe it can get quite low and boney.
Some of the best off trail snowmobiling in Maine is around the Moose River Bow
I bet it is!
You have a 21' roadtrek you have even more room for adding more LiFePO4 batteries, a bigger converter that is compatible with them and larger gauge wires to the batteries and your new 45 or 60 amps converter. Then you can use a nice pure sine inverter all night and you could look at a dc to dc charger to charge it while you're driving.
Good tip!
Crab Apple > Zoar. No contest. <3
Wonderful adventures.
I think the late great Peter Calvert ( passed away a few years ago) was a great man and waterman . He used to run mass whitewater in open canoes 🛶.
We have had the Minnesota 2 for several years and your review is spot on. I keep ours stored outside on wood horses with a Red leaf designs cover and it still looks great. I would add that it is narrow with a rounded bottom that gives it a “tippy” feel initially, but it has good secondary stability. It is fast! I have a great Old Town canoe from the ‘70s, but often didn’t want to load it due to the 80 or so pound weight. The 42 pound Minn. 2 is a breeze to load and portage.
Thumbs up on the thermocell, I also made a screen room for my awning, don't use it often but in no-seeum places its a lifesaver.
Cast Iron pan: I have 2 sizes, cook almost all of my meals in them, including toast. Only problem is when I forget to put them away and they get flung onto my custom inlaid teak floor and put big dings in it.
