This Video highlights the work done over the past 3 years in an effort to restore this amazing boat. With the upgrades to her hardware and electronics I can honestly say she’s better equipped than when she was built in 1985.

Rob Roy 23 Sailboat Rudder Rebuild

The repair to the original rudder on my Rob Roy fell apart while sailing in Casco Bay. After having a new rudder fabricated, I found it didn't have enough weight to stay down. Here's my solution to that...

Ness Yawl Sundowner Sailing on Salem Sound
As a kid we use to sail to Rouges Roost on the weekends. It is one of the coolest spots to hang out at on the NS coastline.
Back when I was cruising, I spent 3 summers up there as far north as Happy Valley- Goose Bay in Labrador. The Canadian maritime islands are great cruising and every time I returned south I sang their praises to my cruising friends, but they still remain seldom visited by cruisers. My last time up there ~10 years ago, after I left Halifax, I didn't see another cruising boat all summer as I explored these beautiful waters. It is pretty remote cruising and not for the faint at heart however.
Really enjoyed your video nice work sir.
@@chrisnegele6875 Thank you very much!
Hi Ed, nice video.
Hello Ed Storey, from Ed Storey in Saint John, NB. I’m not a sailor but I would love to learn and I’ve watched a million hours of other sailors. I loved this video, thanks for sharing your adventures ❤
@@eddiestorey9633 Hello Ed! It’s beautiful country and I’m thrilled you enjoyed the video.
Great production and narration. Thanks so much, from SW Nova Scotia. Where I'm planning my own sailboat education and adventures. Soon...
It’s an incredible place to sail and you won’t be disappointed! On our return from the SE coast of Newfoundland this coming summer we’re going to stop at different harbors as we make our way back down the East Coast of Nova Scotia before sailing home from Halifax.
It’s a great trip with friends! Thank you !
Excellent video and great input for my trip planning for Nova Scotia. Were you happy with your experience so far with Baddeck Marina? I like the idea of leaving a boat in Nova Scotia and continuing the adventure in the next season.
Stuart, the owner of Baddeck Marine, has been great to work with and was instrumental in helping us with the customs agents & forms that need to be completed. His crew is top notch as well.
What a wonderful cruise! And it continues next year! I'm curious: how did you all get home from Baddeck?
We all left Baddeck at different times. We hired a private car (Daryl with down East car service) to drive us from Baddeck to Halifax where we caught a flight home. In fact, we used Daryl for most of our crew changes on this trip since many occurred where there was no public transportation.
Correction…Daryl was with Nova Scotia Transport and his number is 1.902.452.8294. He was awesome and 100% reliable and willing to pick up crew anywhere along our route.
Very nice!
I can’t get enough of the dolphins - so mesmerizing to watch!
Thanks for not having obnoxious background music.
YW :)
Thanks for sharing it! I'm curious, is there a protocol for when you get snagged on a lobster pot buoy? If you have to cut do you tie the buoy to the remaining line? What's the best thing to do?
@@dan711g , it’s best if you can reattach the floats to the line. The traps were 275’ down and there were probably several traps connected in a line. It would’ve been a lot of $$ and gear for the lobsterman to loose.
As a lobsterman and wannabe sailor (my boat is tucked behind the big white one in Matinicus Harbor), I'll say there's almost always enough slack that you can splice a buoy line and avoid the loss and the environmental impact of ghost traps. If you can keep track of the direction of the tide, it's a lot easier to avoid getting snarled in the first place. Still happens, but maybe not so much.
My son and I sailed to Deer Isle from Liberty State Park in NYC in 2021. We mirrored some of your route, which brought back nice memories of the trip.
Thank you for sharing! You are inspiring me😊
Beautiful restoration. I have a Rob Roy just haven't had a chance to exercise her! Looking forward to trailering her to fun places.. Lake Champlain, etc. Have fun!
Thanks Ann! Give me a shout if you’re in the North East and looking for company or want to join me on Misty Jade - She’s in Salem MA for the summers.
Just bought a 1987 Rob Roy 23. Will launch in the spring. Thanks for the tour.
Looks fantastic Ed!! Thank you!

Hi, first off very nice job on the boat. I just bought a Rob Roy 23, mine is missing the stem fitting on the bowsprit. You appear to have some type of stainless padeye fittings bolted through the sprit for the forestay/bobstay. Is this hardware you replaced? If so what is it/ what was your source?
Hi Eric, Thank you and Congrats on purchasing a Rob Roy! They’re wonderful boats as you’ll soon find out. I had the fittings custom made for the headstay and bobstay from www.garhauermarine.com/. I spoke with Mike and fabricated the parts. The hole for the headstay fitting is 1/4” and the holes for the bobstay are 5/16” and they bolt together with 1/4” bolts.. Mike may still have the specs on file if you ask him to reference what he made for me. I also had him fabricate a new mast tabernackle and I purchased the jib tracks & cars from Garhuer also. They make great products and are reasonably priced. If you’re on FaceBook, there is a Rob Roy 23 group which has more information about my boat as well as what a few other owners have posted. Ed
Huge improvement compared to test 1 & 2. Great job!
Nice work! Thanks for sharing.
I grew up sailing this exact boat with my dad on the Cape. It could actually be his boat. Thanks for showing us the wonderful restoration you did. I have been looking for this boat or one like it to sail down here on the Chesapeake Bay!
A little history on the boat…I bought her from a gentleman in Springfield Ma in 2017. He bought her in 2007 and said she was being sailed on Cape Cod. He also said the previous owner was An avid sailor, often flying a spinnaker. The main sheet had been converted to boom end sheeting. As I mentioned in the video, she started out green, was painted white then green again. She came with a marine head which I replaced with a porta potti. It’s possible this could’ve been your Dads boat. If you’re in the greater Boston area during sailing season, message me and we can take her for a sail.
No buoyancy problems there. Did you go into shock? I am sure you know there a lots of really brilliant bilge pumps on the market of the non electrical type. A buckets great for shifting lots of water but becomes less efficient as the level drops, a high capacity whale pump would clear those last few inches very rapidly, a necessity in sever weather.
Hi David, The water was quite refreshing, especially since the boat was floating nice and high! I've thought about adding a high capacity pump, in fact, a friend who also sails a Ness has one mounted behind the rear bulkhead which he can pump while sailing. It's a very tidy setup and one I should probably add to my to-do list.
@@edstorey8057 That's where I would put one to or mounted to starboard as I am right handed.
Hi, new subscriber here. I've certainly been enjoying your videos. I am contemplating a RR 23 for my next sailboat. I've not sailed a yawl only catamarans and sloops. I'd love any advice you might have as I begin the search for a RR.
Hi Justin, I’m glad you are enjoy the videos! The Rob Roy is a wonderful boat to sail, balanced helm, balanced sail plan and she’s extremely well laid out for two people to sleep on. I’ve day sailed with 4 adults comfortably up there isn’t much room to move around the cockpit. The other huge plus is the boat can be trailered and launched by two people in well under an hour. For a day trip it’s too much, but 3 days or more make it worth while. Are you on face book? If so, search for the group called Rob Roy 23. Read through the posts and you’ll gain a good idea what she’s like. I could go on for hours about the boat, but it’d be good to understand how you intend to use her and what qualities in a boat are important to you and conversely, which traits you dislike. Ed
Thanks so much for the response. I am on Facebook, and I’ll certainly give the group a look see. Thanks for the tip. I am intending to use the boat both pre and post retirement. Usually, I’ll be alone, but occasionally another person will join me. I’m in Louisiana so the sailing season basically never ends. I’ll be using it on my travels as both an on and off water camper sailing and fishing my way along. I intend to also bring along my fishing kayak and spear fishing gear. In essence, a lake bum!
Hi Justin, the Rob Roy has a lot of storage - aft of the berths, under the berths, under the stove and sink, there’s a hanging locker and the bow is all storage. The cockpit has two huge lockers and there is storage under the cockpit sole. That bodes well for finding a place for your gear. The boat also has good ventilation, though you may want to add a solar fan to exchange stair when she’s closed up. Unlike most boats with a flat transom, She’s a double ender and there is no good place to install a ladder for boarding from the water. Give some thought how you’ll manage this…also, look at a hunter 23 or similar boat to see how the interior space is used. They tend to be wider and have a v berth, which you may find desirable. Friend me on face book and I’d be glad to chat more about the Rob Roy and what areas to look at in a used one. Ed Storey
Thank you. Facebook message sent.
Absolutely a great video! thank you so much!
Hi! I love your sailing videos!!! I have a 1987 Rob Roy! I love my boat. I live in north Alabama and sail her on Guntersville lake (Tennessee River). My sails are original so I’m thinking about replacing them soon. My boat does not have a spinnaker. I would love to get one. Do you know the dimensions of yours? my boats name is “Kalikimaka” because it is green and red like Christmas! Happy sailing ⛵️
Hi Woody! The Asymmetric spinnaker came with the boat and doesn't have any logo's on it, so I'm unsure who made it. The measurements are: Tack to Head is 257", Tack to Clew is 176" and the Clew to Head is 226". I replaced the original jib with one custom made by North Sails. It's a little larger than the original and has luff tape which allows it to maintain its shape when partially furled. I noticed an immediate improvement in speed (a whopping 1/2 knot to 3/4 of a knot) and pointing. My main sail (also made by Scott Allan, but prior to him joining North Sails) is from '07 and still sets nicely. His email is Scott.Allan@northsails.com. A friend who sails a Rob Roy went with a 140% genoa instead of a jib & he loves it. All of his sails have been made by Bayview Rigging and Sails in Yarmouth, ME. www.royalriverboat.com/bayview-rigging-sails Good luck in your decision!
Hi Ed
I’m not sure if my last comment posted-can’t see it.. Could you tell me how much wind, or wave height that you think the Rob Roy could handle well? Thank you
Glad you enjoyed the video. Reefed down, I've sailed her comfortably on all points of sail in up to 25 kts of wind. 4 -6' swells with 2 to 3' chop on top is the roughest conditions I've been in. In these conditions I tried, but couldn't get a wave to break over the bow, she rides very lightly through the waves. I recently spoke to another Rob Roy owner and on two occasions he has been caught in Gale conditions. He said he was a bit nervous, but with good boat handling, he said the boat did just fine.
Thank you so much!! I ended up bring her home, and she has some work needed. Is there a Rob Roy Group? I’m going to look around to see if I can find one. I need a mast pin for raising the mast, and a rudder attachment bolt-rudder was removed and bolt is missing. Once again, great sailing-I had time to watch a few of you other videos, and your friends with the first sail!!! Thank you
@@MrRandyk2 Congratulations! I'd enjoy seeing some pics of her. I'm not aware of a Rob Roy group, but if you find one let me know. Feel free to email me any questions and send some pics of your boat! edstorey3@gmail.com.
Thank you Ed!
Thank you for sharing the video-great sailing, and picturesque locations!! I sail in northern Michigan, and am planning on looking at a Rob Roy today. Could you tell me how much wind/wave height that you think the boat would handle well?
Love it. My dad had a RR 23 in the eighties and I am looking for one now. If you or anyone here knows of a RR 23 for sale, please contact me at freemandodsworth at yahoo dot com. Great video and lovely boat!
I agree. It is awesome. :)
2.5 cft = 0.071 m3 = 71 L
I know..it was a bit of a learning curve. If I were to start over I'll build enclosed benches and decks...
looks a tad rough, but fun.
it picked up a bit more than we anticipated, but yes, it was hoot!
Nice work! What did you use on your mast, spears and seats? I'm guessing... cetol on the seats?
Thanks! I coated them with epoxy then 6 coats of epiphanies spar varnish.
Very interesting series of video. Thanks for posting.
Great video. Most stare off at the shoreline, so few show the set of the sails as you do.
Thanks, this was the first time I had the boat out in that much wind and was amazed at how well the sail held it's shape.
