Just two games create crazy skills! You'll see how they translated to success for Reggie at the 2022 Master National as test dog.

A good video of what it's really like. How I handle the long distracting walk from the van to the line, to build good choices, without choking the dog.

Thx Jennifer
what if the dog switches?
I don’t understand what you’re doing. Do you have a full video of this?
You had great composure, no excessive whistle blowing or nervous hand movements, etc. Great job, your dog is proud of you. Great tips. Thank you.
Enjoyed watching this!
Question: Does your dog have to sit? I have a Griff that I would like to do JH with... but we don’t like them to sit since he primarily is an upland dog.
How old is he in this video?
Nice to see positive training in america for hunting retrievers. Not Shock collars...
Feeding your dog is considered training on the grounds, should be a fail if you get caught.
Fact!!
Excellent video. Thank you very much.
Single marks in Junior dogs can be difficult sometimes. In this podcast, we discuss why from the retriever's perspective: missskeeter.podbean.com/e/single-marks-and-the-akc-junior-retriever-hunting-test/
Thank you for sharing Jennifer. Very helpful!
Which type of test is this? Akc?
Jennifer, are you running hunt tests or field trials?
Josh, I do both - but my favorite is field trials. Last weekend, we ran a Senior Hunt Test and this weekend we ran an FT Qualifying stake.
@@fieldpuppy I've been running hunt test, but always want to try field trials
You should try it! It's really fun - I love the longer distances and the different approach in Field Trial training. Let me know if you ever want to discuss it.
@@fieldpuppy I will never refuse help. Any time your willing I would be willing to listen.

Excellent vids! Love, seeing you use treats and not an e collar
Wow! Thanks for posting this-I think you're the first positive trainer I've seen doing a hunt test. So it *can* be done! I'm hoping to get a JH with my lab but it's tough finding a gun-dog specific trainer who doesn't use compulsion (or who will work with you if you don't), so I'm watching videos and trying to work the skills with the help of a force-free trainer. These videos are great-thanks again.
Glad to hear it, civvy. Yes it can be done!! Very good, thank you.
Good video,
Excellent! Eye contact is important and this team has it! Eye contact (engagement) is important because ultimately the retriever will be running a blind retrieve away from the handler, the whistle sit mean turn around, quickly sit and pay attention to the handler for a cast to the blind. Later sit and wait for a reward helps build the habit of sitting and engaging with the handler, waiting for the cast helps prevent an "autocasting" behavior. When sending to the food bowl, I like to introduce the cue "good" when pup is focused on the food bowl. ...that cue is important later to inform the retriever he is focused on the correct destination for a good initial line in the blind retrieve.
Thanks Dave! Yes, there are a lot of layers to build to get to the final product, but they go pretty fast, don't they! It goes best when you teach one layer at a time. Good square sits facing you comes after getting the concept of stopping while running toward something. Those clear layers are why I love this training method, it lets you go back to a specific layer to fix issues that may arise later.
Excellent! One thing to keep in mind is when a young pup comes home for the first time he will be MISSING MOM and in a strange new environment. Some pups may not retrieve the first week or so until they get over missing mom and become comfortable with the pup's owner..these types of pups can soon become excellent retrievers once they get past this early phase. If puppy will not retrieve the first week or so, don't worry! Puppy walks are a great way to get pup familiar with you and his new environment.
Good job Jennifer!
Thanks Cindy!!!!
Great stuff Jennifer.
