King George Medley - Missing Marc - Cape Breton fiddle tunes

King George IV King George V Marry me now King's Reel Missing Marc Dillon Brown's Fancy I learned this from Andrea Beaton's Celtic Colours set in memory of Marc Boudreau. She wrote Missing Marc and it's another one of her corker tunes. This is my spare fiddle with 5 year old cheapo strings on it. I'll be stringing it up soon with chromcors.

A fun little tune with lots of possibilities to unlock. I learned this about 9 years ago when I took Skype lessons from Canadian fiddler Adrianna Ciccone. I owe a majority of what I know from those lessons. She is just fantastic I am so thankful. Listen to her album "The Back of Winter", this tune is on the track Maison de Glace. She has started a music and step dance school in Halifax called M...

    It's nice to know what 5+ year helicore strings sound like! Sounds great, though probably different to your ears on the other side of the microphone.

    • @derekstallman
      @derekstallman 9 місяців тому

      They actually sound decent. It sounds different to me under my ear than my regular fiddle, but I'm getting used to it, especially the E string. When chromacor strings are going bad after 6 months they become impossible to play in tune 5ths with barring my finger. This fiddle is way louder I might just start playing this one

    • @ryaaannnn
      @ryaaannnn 9 місяців тому

      @@derekstallman I managed to shred a couple helicore strings a bit after ~6 months (forgot to trim nails one day, oops), so it's cool to know they could theoretically make it that long. Good to have the option of a louder fiddle if you need it-- who made it?

    • @derekstallman
      @derekstallman 9 місяців тому

      @ryaaannnn same here they always unwind around the 3rd finger area for me so I quit using them years ago and switched to steel strings like my teacher at the time. This fiddle hasn't been played in a while but I know the strings don't last forever, so I just assumed they were crap now. The violin is Chinese with no label. I got it for 200 on ebay 10 years ago. I'm always surprised how much I like it when I do play it

    • @ryaaannnn
      @ryaaannnn 9 місяців тому

      @@derekstallman Do you have a favorite steel string maker? Maybe I'll give them a shot! I picked up fiddle at the beginning of pandemic and discovered I'm obsessed, but have largely only played on helicore strings so far.

    • @derekstallman
      @derekstallman 9 місяців тому

      @ryaaannnn pirastro chromcor are what I use. They used to be 35 a pack but now they are 50 sadly, but that was a big plus when I switched from expensive helicores and dominants. They are very durable, never had one break. Some of my favorites Tim Chaisson and Kimberley Fraser use them. Now that I'm thinking about it and looking at the color, the strings on this fiddle aren't helicores. They are a cheaper string that a past student bought when I loaned this violin out

      @@derekstallman nice. I want a Hardanger fiddle so badly, not only to play the Norwegian tunes I know, but to experiment with Scottish tunes… having five sympathetic strings ringing out would really give that highland “sound” I think. And instead of playing tunes in A, they’d likely be in Bb, B, or even C! It’s a smaller bodied instrument so it can handle it. But most of the tunes are played with standard fingering but tuned sharp. Do you know anything about Norwegian music? It’s funny because Norwegian people call the Shetland islands “Little Norway”. And that makes so much sense, it’s like halfway between Scotland and Norway, the Viking influence on the dialect, and the fiddle music is very influenced by Norwegian music. Such as Catriona MacDonald 😉

      @@erikm8372 I heard a girl play hardanger fiddle at a ceilidh and it was hypnotic. I imagine it's hard to shop for one in the US. Thanks and good to hear youre fiddling! I like the cape breton style because it's simple in that it mainly uses seperate bows, but has a dead on steady rhythm. I learned fancy stuff at first but my rhythm and precision suffered for a long time. What type of fiddle music do you like? Graham Mackeznie and Tim Chaisson are some favorites for me at the moment

      @@derekstallman i get the names confused but i had trouble with the rhythms of one of them and could not pick it up reading sheet music, so hearing it got me on track. another one where learning by ear that your playing helped with was bog an lochan. the rhythms of strathspeys give me difficulty. actually though, i'm liking learning by ear better now even though i started off strictly with sheet music because this gives me access to ornamentation and stylistic things that don't come out of typically vanilla sheet music. if it's no trouble keep posting. the quality of your playing isn't reflected in the size of your listener based and these recordings will literally last forever. in a hundred years you'll have a million views!

      @@rainerdeusser Ya sometimes I'll cheat and look at sheet music so I can get the notes, and then learn it by ear from the recording. I can't read the strathspey rhythms very well at all. I learned bog an lochan from Kimberley Fraser and she plays it on the "Suas E" episode on youtube. It's solo fiddle so it's great to pick out all the details. Thank you, I'm inclined to start posting again, I've come back to practicing with fresh eyes after a break, and your feedback has inspired me.

      @@derekstallman well ok, i'm glad you're back. keep on trucking. music is a garden. i'm going to be bold and make two suggestions. 1) i'm not a musician. i view these pieces as little puzzles. can i sort the pieces (stylistic components) in interesting ways? that can keep it fresh because at any point you can upend the box and change things about. which works with 2) in the back of your mind you can layer on top of your own motivations a teaching component. i'm not a sophisticated player. illustrating how a piece can evolve from a basic but tonally beautiful simple version to gradually including variations that alter rhythmically or that add and teach ornamentation and eventually move into more complex versions that explore riffs and phrases that can be worked into other pieces could hypothetically keep your mind turning while simultaneously providing value to potential listeners. just a humble thought.

      @@rainerdeusser when I learn a new ornament I put the little cliche everywhere I can, and then over time it will come out in my playing during a performance or recording. so now at this point I have a few things that I typically do, and trying to at deliberate moments when the tune energy calls for it. I want to include a round or two of the tune at a slower tempo at the end of my videos so I can use them as resource for students or something in the future.
