Serena and me: Can you hear the fat lady singing?
The opera's not over until the fat lady sings, they say but as Serena's problems keep mounting up, I'm sure I can hear the orchestra tuning up. In the meantime, the natural world around here continues to fascinate and amaze me.

Serena and me: Drinking at the Last Chance Saloon
My first fourteen years were spent in England where they had an expression, "Drinking at (or in) the Last Chance Saloon". It is still a popular phrase there though strangely seems less used in America where it originated. It describes a situation beyond which there is no further hope for success, a bit like, "Well, it's a million to one chance but it just might work!" While I'm not ready to thr...
Serena and me: Even the birds are laughing
This is the latest episode in the never-ending saga of my 1995 Nissan Serena's problems and my attempts to fix them . I'm still not accepting that she is far past her use by date. The front radiator hoses have arrived but as usual with Serena, nothing is ever easy. The job wasn't made any easier by the kookaburras laughing at my plight or by the daily distractions of where I live, such as pione...
Serena and me. Hose! Hose! Hose! She's having a laugh!
After I replaced the head gasket and got Serena going again, I thought the worst was over. All I had to do was replace the water hoses and I'd be back on the road. Of course, this being a Nissan Serena, nothing was going to be that easy. In the meantime, we hit the cold weather which started lambing season plus I kept getting distracted by birds. That's the story of my life really though these ...
Serena - Does she go? Know what I mean?

Please accept my apologies for any confusion. I have reloaded this video as the subtitles were not showing (my fault). Unfortunately this means it has a new url. Anyway.. Once upon a time... well, before Covid-19 anyway, I decided to try to fix my 1995 Nissan Serena's blown head gasket instead of pushing it over a cliff, which was my first idea. The process has been prolonged by parts availabil...

Serena and me: Backsides of Bendigo, Killing a Forest (Part 2) and Serena has a breakdown!
It's back to the bush remnant north of Bendigo that was cut off from the main forest when the airport was built. On the way we stop to admire some interesting "backsides" in Bendigo then on to the forest, comparing the remnant with the main forest area. Our leisurely drive home was spoiled when Serena had a breakdown. It looks bad! Music Intro: "St Patrick's Day" from "The Ballad of Ben Hall" T...

Do you ever think that you need to slow down for a while? Join Serena and me as we relax after a hard day. What better way could there be than to sit and watch the sun go down. Serena and Me: Sex in the Wombat Forest
Spring has been cool here this year but that has not dampened the sexual ardour of the local inhabitants. I'm referring, of course to the plants and animals around here. I would prefer not to know what my human neighbours are getting up to. An Echidna risks death to cross a road to find a female while the plants put on their finest regalia to attract a pollinator to help spread their genes far ...
Camping on the Loddon and Return to the Wombat Forest
Sometimes it's good to get away for a bit and there is a great camp ground beside the Loddon River. It is not far from where I went looking for the Greenhood Orchids so camping there makes it easy to return to the forest and see what changes have occurred. Music "The Ballad of Ben Hall" (intro: St Patrick's Day). Trad. arr. Cobbers Cobbers catalogue is handled by Green South Records. "Down by t...
Serena and me: Waiting For The Storm
I'm not travelling today. There is a storm due though I doubt if it will match the one we had a while back. That one even made the news due to the spectacular sunset it caused. Up here on the hill, we could see it coming and I took photographs with my phone every few minutes. Once the storm hit, I set the phone on video mode and watched the place go wild. I've put it all together as a movie, de...
My recycled Nissan Serena camper van: How to kill a forest
There is a Box - Ironbark forest remnant about a hundred kilometres north of here that I used to visit a lot. It was a part of the Whipstick Forest until it was cut off from the main forest when the airport was built. The Ironbark forests were decimated during the goldrush of the 1850s to provide timber for the mines. Perhaps due to the poor soil that remained after the gold seekers were gone, ...
Serena and me. My (almost) recycled Nissan Serena camper van
Back in the nineties, the guys at Top Gear reckoned the Nissan Serena was the worst car ever made. So when a scrap dealer friend of mine was sending a 1995 model to the crusher, I rescued it to see what the fuss was about. I converted it into a camper. Now I can get out into the bush and follow my hobby of photographing wildflowers. I'm based in Central Victoria, Australia so that seems like a ...

Great clips of the wildflowers. I was especially interested to see the yam daisy which I've read about but never seen myself. I noticed the petals have spaces between them which would help to distinguish them from dandelion.

Unfortunately she isn't. The damage to the motor was too much so at the moment, she's sitting out in the paddock waiting for me to decide what to do with her. One idea is to perhaps rebuild her as electric if I can find a powerful enough motor and the money to put it all together. Another thought was to lift the entire body off and set it onto a four wheel drive base. I had so many great times over the years with Serena, I don't want to simply scrap her now but I also have too many other projects on the go so time will tell, I suppose.

I love this! I grew up with a serena and sadly, my mum had it trashed last year. Now I got into campervans and I want to honor our old bus by getting a relative and turning that one into my perfect first campervan. The flowers are so beautiful and interesting, it was surreal to see those kangaroos just hopping across, I am from Germany. Great video, great camper, I hope you are living well :)

Hi Mike There are no bars listed for the Serena but you can adapt the ones that exist. I'll show how it fitted in the next video I do, but basically the front bar is bolted above the door so I had to cut a groove in the door rubber. It still stays waterproof though. The rear bar is bolted into the grooves on the roof. All the bolts are locked with superglue. I did a couple of thousand kilometers of highway driving as well as a lot of dirt roads and it is still as solid as a rock.

I might need to do some critical thinking myself. I got the fans working and sourced some new replacements. The weakened hoses were all replaced. Took her for a test drive for about fifteen minutes and it was looking good but then she started blowing white smoke. I checked the oil and sure enough, it was emulsified meaning the head gasket has gone. I love this old girl but everyone I know, including my mechanic friend reckon it's time to stop pouring money into her. Over the last eight years or so, I've spent around ten grand and I'm thinking they might be right. I still think they are a good vehicle, despite what top gear said but this poor thing had been treated very badly before I got her so it is not a good example to judge them by.
