Looking at moving to SC we currently homeschool where we live. I have one huge question for 7th grade and up it says we need to do composition and literature. Does this mean like good literature as one subject and then also teaching composition as a separate subject or do they require them to be taught together so like a literature and composition program that teaches both together? Thanks

I'm just seeing this comment! The law specifies a higher level of thinking for English/Language Arts component when you get to 7th grade. It's switches from learning how-to read and write to analyzing literature and composing writing. It's still English/Language Arts.

Thank you for the information! We are moving to Fort Mill, SC in about 2 months from California so I was lost on how to homeschool out there! Do you by chance know how long I have to pick one of the 3 options once we move to the state?

Technically, I suppose it's 10 school days (or school absences). But, since we don't have to file a letter of intent with the school district, they would not know you're there to count you absent. They would actually be very confused if you stopped by just to say, "Hey, we're new in the neighborhood--so we just stopped by to say, we're not going to enroll in your school." The legislators wrote the law to identify the minimum requirements. But, I find most people are actually far exceeding that. Nobody is trying to take shortcuts on their child's future. Getting connected to an accountability group will help you make sure you're opening the doors of opportunity. I've got lots more resources about homeschooling in South Carolina on my blog to help you get started here: www.homeschoolingsc.org/getting-started-page/
