Tires: Snow Tires vs All Season Tires - Auto Care Corner
This is why I no longer come to your shop. I swear you guys just make stuff up. The oil does not make it from the oil pan to the top and fully lubricate the engine in microseconds on a cold day.
Horse manure. You want the oil to make it to the top of the engine valve train and positive pressure the cam phasors and anything else that uses oil as the actuator. That said, give it 2, maybe 3 minutes then drive gently.
Agreed, I think this guy wants to sell engine repair services.
Exception would be not putting a significant load on the engine until it warms up sufficiently. Pistons and turbo impellers are particularly vulnerable to expanding faster then the cylinder wall and turbine housing, and can cause clearance problems. Drive the vehicle, but take it easy until it gets up to operating temp.
Fuel dilution of oil when cylinder, rings and pistons are cold and the injectors are running rich is a real problem with cold motors. Driving gently, staying out of boost while warming up slowly is critical to not saturate cylinders with fuel droplets do to lack of atomization when cold.
My car is a 2000 rhd Subaru, if I drive it stone cold, the variable valve timing won't engage, the idle air control valve won't go down, ( revs at 1500 at stop lights and is embarrassing) , my other 2004 Toyota echo, doesn't care whether it's hot or cold it drives the same
Thanks for sharing your experience with your two cars! Newer vehicles are generally designed to run efficiently without long warm-up times, but as you’ve noticed, every car has its quirks, especially when dealing with different models and years.
Thanks for the tips Dad!!
Great stuff!
Good info. Thank you John!
Thank you for the information!
Just got a set of Continental Terrain Contact HT’s on my truck, they grip like a winter tire and are an all season I have never been more impressed with an all season tire. Check them out if you have not.
Studs are really useful if you travel in the winter over high mountain roads. Also, if you get caught in freezing rain, it's the difference between some fraction and no traction. I treat myself to study tires in the winter every year
That's very true. Thanks for the reply!
Honest man.
Thank you!
I was a professional mechanic for 20 years it's not worth it. You'll spend thousands on tools and destroy your body. Became a class A truck driver making the same money and all I do is drive 9-10 hours a day and go home easy money
