12:08 sharku and the warg riders? they are the basis of my army with Isengard trolls , here is a play i run in with troll with spear into tightly bunched warriors, barge until finish move, charge with warg riders on prone target(with spears)until every one prone is locked into combat with my attackers doubling their dices MUHAHAHA i love knocking people prone then charging in ,Saruman sorcerous blast to make opponent prone,charge in prone targets with warg rider , same with Ballista knock em down, finish with warg riders

Ruffians are very much bordering on a joke faction. Even the official guidebook claims that they're a terrible army that would crumple like a paper cup to any kind of organized force. And that's entirely accurate to the books, too; the moment a squad of ruffians realize that Merry and Pippin showed up with swords and armor, they immediately flee in terror. The only large battle they took part in was the Battle of Bywater, which was probably the most lopsided battle in the books--and it was in favor of the hobbits, even.

I think this is a cool Idea. latly they sold some MESBG in my area, so i think of getting into the hobby again. These Ideas i can possibly also use to play with some of my roleplaying/ dnd guys and introduce them to the game that way.

Even if my experience with Minas Tirith differs from yours i found the video entertaining and i heard some interesting and valuable ideas. Thanks you for that. I noticed that you only made a video for isengard and Minas Tirith and that those Videos were made years ago but still i hope that you continue this series at some point and exemplify some more warbands with their pros and cons and strategy in the future.

Hello Don. I like your video and i wish i would have seen it earlier. A Friend of mine used to play BC with me. He plays Isengard and i play Minas Tirith. I couldnt believe that you gave MT a competition rating of 5 and only 4 for Isengard. I dont have as much experience as you do (specially late campaign) but i just cant stop whining and complaining about how incredibly unbalanced those warbands are. My Gondor boys are getting raped out there. When i win a game its pure luck. im not a strategic genius but this executions i have to witness over and over again are just simple math. if we roll for duell and got the same numbers, orcs win. they hit on a 5 but wait i can improve y defense with a shield from 5 to 6. whoops orcs still hit on 5. i can form a shieldwall. yes great idea. i get outnumbered and the shieldwall gets pushed apart from lost duell rolls. my shieldwals barely hold for one phase. due to my weak strength of 3 i also hit on 5es even on the weak scouts. if i face a uruk warrior with shield its like a one man shieldwall. good luck rolling 6es. oh yes and they have the best range weapon. lets humiliate them even before they get overpowered in melee. when you said that there is an erata chaning the scout bows to strength 3 i thought it was a april foolsday joke and the only involved person died. I was losing my mind thinking about how i can get any advantage that would give me a slight chance and now i saw your video. Needing horses and special reinforcemens sound logic and of course they wont be aviable in the first games. the ralley horn sounds really geart. i didnt had that on my mind and i will definetley give it a try. But... The horn costs 5 and a horse 3 if i remember right and you gotta collect those points with loses most likeley, which means that isengard gains like... idk double as much points? That would be 5 new orcs added to that band and even if its only three. MT wouldnt get a single model and the new and only rider would be the range target number one and even with the ralley horn rolling on the chart is still nothing but gamble. So then i got a warband of still 6 minis who get rekt by 7 minis wich are now 10. i cant see at wich point i am going to catch up. even if i get my hands on some fountain guards. they have equal fight value wich make duells finally fair but still only 3 strength. i can spent even more points and buy them a shield, defense 7 would be awesome but still they are not really that much better than the uruks. (i once had a berserker slaying two fountain guards with one strike. i know its a dice game and things like that allways can happen but it pretty much summs up how playing minas tirith on isengard feels for me) So I need to wait till Isengard hits its maximum of 15 minis, then i have to reach that by my self and then i buy the wardogs and then i pray for good rolls on the reinforcement chart to replace the weak units with ok-ish ones. how many games do i have to bite the dust untill i can start a new round with a little bit of confidence?... wow what a wall of text. i got carried away quite a bit. Long story short: i regret picking Minas Tirith as my warband.

Army of Dunland is hands down the most balanced Legendary Legion of MESBG. Also very nice looking models. Every single model is viable and has its job and does it perfectly. Really fun/thematic but also competitiv and hits surprisingly hard. Can only recommend!

Hey! Thanks for the info:) I know the comment is a bit late... But I have always found the ruffians super interesting. I never tried battle companies but I can imagine they are tricky as hell with the low model count and just pure shitness(excuse the bluntness). As we have been in lockdown the past week I have kept wondering if I should go for the models or not. I have just placed an order of 140 ruffian models! I am super excited. I know they are not "META" oriented or competitive I guess but I just want to have fun at a few tournaments (In Austria or Germany) in the near future:) I did find a good read on the ruffians strategies for the different scenarios! tellmeatalegreatorsmall.blogspot.com/2020/07/the-bare-necessities-part-xxviii-chiefs.html But yeah I cannot wait to start painting these models and I will also enjoy being the underdog. Hey this seems super simple yet effective. One small question, with enemies that have Might, Will, Fate etc. How would you deal with this element? When would they take heroic actions or cast spells etc.

Yay! Highlight of my week was seeing this pop up! It's been a rough year eh?! Poor dwarves, they did it rough that mission. I think the raven will be excellent! Have you thought about maybe doing a fantasy fellowship with the new quest of the ringbearer? Something else you might be able to do solo or with just one other person too. So glad you're back! Oh, also, the 3D printed scenery looked really great!

Hi Don - I've really enjoyed your 2 BC breakdowns videos - especially this one on the Isengard BC. It's a faction that I played with way back when BC first came out. Your explanations and thoughts on how to play and progress them is logical and makes a lot of sense - something I need to exercise more of now that my son is 27 and not 13! (One of the upsides to the COVID lockdown has been getting back into BC). I've also enjoyed watching you BCR's - especially the solo ones. If possible could you please do a faction breakdown video on the Minas Morgul BC? It has a really interesting mix of models. I have some thoughts on it but would like to compare them with someone else's thoughts. Others on the wish list would be the Fiefdoms and Easterlings BCs. In the meantime keep up the great content - and thank you what's there so far. Paul (Melbourne Aust.)

Wow, what a fun narrative series, but boy, what a tough one that was! These really small matches are so difficult as the dice can really speak out against you! I find that the extra 5 points for those extra points of will just make things harder when you count up the points as they're so rarely useful - then again, for courage tests against trolls I guess they are helpful! Speaking of trolls, wow, that was brave to take on two of them! Just the fact that they only need a six to win and can clobber even toughly armoured dwarves - yikes! I was super lucky last time I faced a troll as I managed to knock a few wounds off in ranged and then the troll fluffed its attack roll! simbattleboard.blogspot.com/2020/06/shire-protectors-battle-company-battle.html I think all dwarves have hand axes (even the archers)? Loving this and I'll miss the solo games - but will enjoy seeing Garrett again!

Awesome concept! This sort of battle system reminds me of Rangers of Shadow Deep. If you end up doing more of this style, I'd highly recommend checking out that rule system for inspiration!

Today I started trying this myself. After this troll. I'll be using the leftover leftover bits from the sprue to make a third troll. This is my first big greenstuff project and it is going pretty well. Due to the weight of the greenstuff, I might try using Sculpey like Marco Manetta suggests.

Thanks for the review! I've never been interested in the ruffians for all the reasons you've just suggested! I can see how they may be fun for playing the scenarios in the Scouring and their points costs work there in comparison to the Hobbits. But at least in battle companies the Hobbits can have a larger army! I've taken to adding more advancements to other factions just to make it more interesting too. It's just no fun not to have that extra joy of levelling up. There's a few companies that need to take the approach of the dwarven rangers you mentioned and the hobbits with their battlin' brandybucks and tookish hunters just even to get a little +1 of something to make it more interesting. I also agree that any special rules that are only about another faction are nowhere near as fun as others that actually buff your guys a little. In short, I agree that this is a boring and pretty useless company!

I love this videos, but like you said, speaking about ruffians is not of my interest, so expecting another company to reach briefly. I think that if they are not the worst, they are the second one. Also they are a little expensive

Sharkey's Rogues, the bad version of Laketown! To talk about Sharkey's Rogues, I would have to first talk about Laketown. Laketown, from my experience, is not strong, but not too terrible of a company. They have no cavalry, crossbows, lances, elf bows, or anything, however the 20 pop cap and access to the Master's Cutpurse (Essentially a mini Heroic Strike bomb) is pretty decent. Rallying horn, hunting dogs, and manacles are tools that can be used but the company excels at scooping up underdog influence and staying cheap well into the mid-game. The disadvantage is that their troops promote into worse models, since F3 isn't as important as shields, axes, and the bravery of militia. This is the one faction where advancements are not desirable! Rallying Horn is very important to maintain model output and to try for the double-guards to always make sure your bow limit is at peak efficiency. Spears are very important to keep your weight of dice consistent. Laketown militia with shield/axe front line with guard spears in the back is the hope with as many bows as possible (6). Laketown can also benefit from the stellar Good wanderers. Now, Sharkey's Rogues - they don't have these advantages. They do not get the troop spam reinforcement option on their chart. They have no defense so suffer in the casualty game. Sharkey's Rogues also do not have the bow-game that Laketown has. Laketown wins games through having more dice than their opponent. Rogues can try to say the same, however enemy shooting will ruin you here since elf bows wound on 4s here and have no ranged shooting of note to retaliate with. Sharkey Rogues also represent more XP for the enemy than you can get for your ruffians yourself. Each model in the Rogues is an easy XP that will send your opponents even further ahead. Rogues cannot get good wanderers. Finally, Sharkey's Rogues is an expensive faction to buy! It's essentially a cosmetic/bling faction. How would I fix Sharkey's Rogues? Make them match what we did for the old "Saruman's Influence" company in the community edition: make dunlending warriors an advancement for the faction and call them "thugs"!
