Aileron balance weight rivet change on a 1962 Cessna 210B - This Old Airplane
Переглядів 2,9 тис.5 років тому
On this Saturday morning episode of This Old Airplane: we change the aileron balance weight rivets as outlined in Cessna Single Engine Service Letter 71-27-R1.
Loosen all of the screws on the wingtip and reposition correctly then tighten screws. There is no real guide to make sure the tip goes on properly other than to line it up with the aileron. Seen this many times as an A&P
@@scottmonroe6522 gotcha! Plane is gone, so it’s a moot point for me. Those wingtips were the hard fiberglass type, and they fit tightly. There was no slop available to reposition them much at all. Great suggestion th!
Nope, you use the emergency hand pump to run them when the engine is off…
Interesting video. Just wondering how the flaps are powered if they are hydraulic and the pump is driven by the engine? Is there an accumulator to provide some power when the engine is not running?
So cool to see 52Xray. I owned her about 20+ years ago. A safe, solid, heavy plane. About 140-145 Kts. We flew out KLHM from the south hangars. She needed modern avionics and a simpler gear retraction system. We flew her to Half Moon Bay over the golden gate then down the coast to eat at Mezza Luna just outside the gate.
Hi Gus! Good to hear from you! Do you by chance know where all the doors that were removed went? I was considering a project to put them back on, however now 52Xray has gone on to fly with a new owner ;-)
No length or vendor given for unusual plated replacement rivets , No video of rivet removal or bucking/squeezing and no view of bucked heads.
Won’t start cause it’s a junker
Nah! It’s a great bird, just in a constant state of restoration! Thanks for watching! With less than 2,500 new piston planes sold each year (worldwide), you gotta keep them flying!
Good vid. I believe this also applies to Cessna 172 series. Quite critical as the edge of this skin is "into the wind". Keep up the good work.

Nice vid !
It's pretty bad when you're flying straight - level and uncoordinated. Either that or your cross-controlled. The 172 I'm flying now has almost a full ball deflection when keeping plane level and straight with rudder and neutral aileron. Completely exhausting on Cross country flights when you have to put aileron input just to keep coordinated flight. We'll see if the FBO makes the corrections to my complaint. I would assume this would be considered unairworthy; because this would put the plane in a cross-controlled configuration. When you are performing stalls the ailerons are supposed to be neutral and you're supposed to maintain coordination otherwise you'll induce a spin. Upon approach to land you are in a low and slow attitude, making the danger all that much more. Luckily I have two other aircraft I can fly, but I'm not so sure the maintenance is any better. Flying in Alaska I can see why there are so many accidents, with so few options in terms of FBO's.
Yep, it definitely makes flying a lot more work when the bird you are in isn’t rigged properly, I’d also share your concerns with the safety factor of flying a plane that was as far out of rig as the one you describe, for sure! Thanks for the reminder, I do need to do a follow up to this video, as I most recently did get 52Xray’s rigging squared away to the point where she flies hands-off and coordinated. Although I didn’t take any videos when we did the adjustments, I could surely describe the procedures with some pics and explain the tools involved in the process. Thanks!
I don’t mind at all! Thanks for watching!
Great video! Liked and subscribed. I have 9653X. I would love to talk to you about some of the plastic interior pieces that you have repaired.
Sure, be happy to chat next week if you like...
Thank you for sharing the materials and techniques you use on the interior plastics!
Great video Dana. Can't wait to see what happens to this airplane.
Awesome, thanks for watching!
When my 206 was having a hard time making book speeds I wondered if it was aerodynamic related. It turned out to be that my A&P had set my mag timing incorrectly. The timing had been retarded by about 10°. And that turned out to be about 12 knots at cruise.
Great idea! I actually started there, as I had just rechecked the timing during the annual inspection. Thanks for watching!
You should join Cessna Pilots Society. (From a fellow 210 owner)
Love the 210's and the B model is the first I would consider. Sooo much room and bang for the buck performance. I owned a 210-5 for 6 years and really miss the room it had (I'm back in a Cherokee) but I will own a 210 again... somewhere between a B model and F model. I like the strutted planes - and like you said in the video, many worry about the gear so prices for 210's are really low. What are your real world cruise numbers? Some say the 210B will do 150 knots but that seems optimistic???
Thanks Lance! Well, according to the POH it should be capable of cruise speeds of 160KTAS. I will admit, I haven’t gotten ours there but I know the rigging needs some tweaking, as well as removing the doors robs us of a few knots. However, I’ll do my tweaks and see what I can get out of the bird. Of course, POH numbers are based on test pilots flying a new plane in ISA conditions... I believe we’ll get it up to 150 KIAS, but time will tell.
Sooooooo..... saw this video shared on our C210-5 Facebook page. Do you not have an I0-470-S in front? Curious about the avgas STC. Great video, btw! - Jacob
Yes, the InPulse water injection STC allows using MOGAS in the IO-470-S... It’s not cheap, but might be a viable option as Avgas gets more expensive. It was $10k last time I inquired... Thanks for the comments!
