Major spoilers for both series here: Both Pug and Will are orphans. Both don't know who their parents are. Both are raised in the castle. Both of their best friends are insanely good swordsmen. (Thomas and Horace. They even rhyme!) Both want to be chosen by the swordsmaster but are too small. Both are then chosen by the mysterious person that doesnt often take apprentices and everyone is superstitious about. (Magician and Ranger respectively) Both safe the life of a member of the family ruling the castle they live in from and monster-like creature, and are rewarded (Princess Carline and Baron Arald). Both briefly fall in love with a princess, before falling properly in love with, and marrying, someone else. Both get captured during a war and become slaves. Both then get free and befriend the people of the country they were captured by, and then become instrumental in reconciling their country and the one that captured them. Like the similarities keep going 😂😂

I loved Nikolai’s duology but for the first 150-200 pages of both books I had to force myself through. But after it really got interesting for me it was perfect. I absolutely loved Rule of Wolves and especially the ending, after I read it and checked full reviews and fandom media was surprised how many didn’t like it. Especially The Darkling’s POV, his chapters were really interesting to read and I was shocked when people said they didn’t like it or they skipped them.

Seriously underrated. On my first re-read after 16 years and loving it again! Dreading the end of book 2 but that’s the way it was meant to be. Hobey-ho!

On the one hand it doesn't glorify the racist, sexist, childish, swindling or ignorant attitudes it describes. It describes how it can feel normal to be like that while the author always seems slightly amused but above these things. On the other hand, there is no guarantee the reader sees it like that. The style seemed very akin to the movie Little Big Man. There isn't an altruistic super being protagonist that will fix everything.
