    Hi, that's a great hack, and I've tried it with the GO II. Although it works, the problem is that the volume is very low, so low that it's almost useless even with the gain set to max.

    I finally pulled the trigger on an Apache 4800 and 5800 after lugging my heavy camera backpack and 2x 500W Indra strobe set in an inadequate soft case on a handful of outdoor shoots. I knew I needed to do something about my setup once I put my backpack and soft case down on filthy wet and algae-covered pavement at my last shoot. A hard case would save me a lot of time during lens swaps since I shoot with prime lenses, and a hard plastic case can be set down in whatever environment on-location without worrying about filthying up a nice backpack that you're going to wear heading back to the studio. The Apache 4800 (also sold as the Eylar SA00002) setup with the insert costed me $100, whereas the Pelican 1520 with the insert would have been $250. The Apache 5800 (also sold as the Eylar SA00034) cost me $170, whereas the Pelican 1510 with the insert would have been $270. If you don't need wheels, going with the 4800 is by far the best value. The two Apache cases are very similar in size overall. I bought the inserts direct from CVPKG which manufactures the soft inserts that Pelican sells on their own website. If you're like me and need to bring light stands and softboxes on location you might as well get a small folding hand truck and just get a couple of the 4800s, but if you're taking a small kit with just speedlights and no modifiers or stands then you can't beat the convenience of built-in wheels, especially if going on airline flights regularly.

    Hi! Do you boost your audio volume in post? Because when I recorded audio with simillar setup (ntg + go - it wasn't plugged into the camera, wireless go was used as recorder) audio sounded a bit silent compared to your audio. I had gain on the mic set to 11. I had plugged headphones into reciever and distance between micophone and actor was about 70 cm.

    • @42Pros
      @42Pros 3 місяці тому

      I’m going to assume that the NTG’s gain was set to 11 since you didn’t plug the receiver into a camera. With that said, the volume of the receiver (that you listen to with your headphones) that you hear will be based on the receiver’s output volume (that usually goes to your camera) which is the “volume” on the receiver. This volume setting will hardly ever match the input volume of the recorded audio. In order to record good audio to the TX internally, you will have to rely on the gain input meter/signal bar (green/yellow/red bar) that is viewable on the RX. With that said, just about 100% of the time I’ll use a noise removal plugin/effect, a compressor and some volume adjustments at a minimum to help with the volume of the talent that is speaking. I have another video regarding this set up that has a screen shot of some of my audio effects that I use in FCP X. Hope this helps.

    I've just ordered the NTG to pair with my Wireless Go Pro. I'm a little confused about one part. You used the back of the mic to make your initial audio adjustments to where you wanted it. But when you hooked the receiver to the camera, you changed the db level to make your audio louder in camera. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of adjusting it on the back of the mic or am I missing something? I know there have been changes (Wireless Pro for one) since this video came out. What about the other settings for the NTG mic. How exactly do they work? Thank you.

    • @42Pros
      @42Pros 4 місяці тому

      The adjustment dial on the back of the NTG is to set the INPUT GAIN (or signal strength) for the Wireless Go II's transmitter/mic. If you have that too hot (too loud) then the audio will get brittle and distort. The db adjustment on the receiver was to set the internal audio of the camera so that I can get as close to perfect in-camera that I possibly can to speed up my work in post. When you get your mic, take the time to set it up like I demonstrated and simulate an interview (record a short clips of you talking). Then, use the NTG's "volume dial" and set it higher to the point where the Wireless Pro's receiver displays the signal bar peaking well into the red (over driving the input) and record another interview clip and then play back the 2 recordings and listen to the difference in the audio. It will make MUCH MORE sense. This technique is called setting your 'gain structure' in live performance sound production (front of house, concerts and such). It helps with getting the best signal-to-noise ratios that make for really clean audio.

Sorry that I can't help out with a specific model number but you can do the same thing with an unweighted stand if you use a sand bag to hold it down while fully extended. For theatrical or documentary work this can be quite useful for a high-quality rich multi-channel audio mix emulating what is known in film circles as "the Altman visiting audio style or the wandering conversation. @@dannepedersen I'm reading into this at the moment and as far as I understand from my research, the phones out has too much power as the transmitter expects a Mic signal. There are attenuator cables with 35dB dampening to correct this. Search for Line-to-Microphone attenuator cable. So I guess we would need one of those for each channel on top and we should be good. So the distortion you're experiencing is probably happening on the transmitter, not the receiver. Can't test that yet, though...

      @@42Pros Thanks, that is really good to know. I asked because I'm tired of buying magic arms that twist under load or when it is load bearing in the wrong direction. It's hard to find affordable magic arms with anti-twist. Cheapest ones are the short blue Smallrig ones with the o-ring ball heads and hidden tightening tool in the handle. The problem about those is that it's too short. Hopefully the iFootage spider crabs are worth 2-3 times the price.

      I forgot to mention even sturdier looking magic arms like Smallrig's $30-50 have unscrewed from between the ball head and the gnarled thumbscrew mounting head. Looks can be deceiving. So I have to double triple check before I buy now.

      @@FireLiteCreations I have used the 7" with the clamp for a few different occasions where it held a Sony a7iv, 16-35 GM and a Video Mic NTG without moving or losing grip. It's worked very well for me so far.

    That Godox 32" softbox apparently isn't available anymore. I found a couple, but they look like they're for speedlights. What softbox would you recommend for the YN300 III?

    If used at full power, can it work on-camera as a key light? I normally use bounce flash indoors, but I'm looking for a strong, portable on-camera diffused light that will allow me to shoot outdoors at night or in low-light conditions.

      You can definitely use it as an on-camera light but it’ll still be more of a “hard light” as oppose to true diffused lighting.

    Great video. How do you avoid the grid pattern from the barn doors, though? Because I definitely don't want that. Are they removable?

      Just use the diffuser insert and open the barn doors and you’ll be fine.

    Sir why should I use the mic top handle for the FX3 if I can instead use a DJI Wireless Mic System with 2 mics and 1 receiver on the FX3? I would avoid big microphones like the NTG and also I dont need the Sony FX3 top handle anymore and can use something fancy like the smallrig cage + top handle?

      4 channels of audio... you would have the DJI or Rode WG2 mics on individual channels to edit in post AND you would have the should gun audio on channels 3/4. Since I do a lot of documentary run and gun style filming I have had to used the shotgun mic audio more than once and that has saved me from a lot of headaches and added work because I had the "extra audio" as a back up.

    Any tips what transmitter and wireless headphone/earbud combo to use when you’re trying to hear your voice like a normal podcast when shooting? I have been having latency issues and it’s so hard to find something that works without half-a-second lag. Is this impossible? Because I don’t want to look like a weirdo with wired headphones

    • @42Pros
      @42Pros Рік тому

      Depends on your camera. Some cameras have different audio monitoring settings, and one of which is to “monitor live” or as it is happening, like a podcast. Without knowing your set up, it’s hard to troubleshoot the issue. I hope this helps.
