Buy on GOG: www.gog.com/en/game/iron_storm

It's the year 1964, and the WW1 still rages on!
The United Nations Of The Western Europe are struggling against the Russo-Mongolian Empire, led by the Baron Nikolai Aleksandrovich Ugenberg.
The legendary Second Leutenent James Anderson is tasked with a special mission: breach into the enemy territory, infiltrate a secret laboratory, and steal/destroy the plans for a new weapon that would ensure victory in the conflict for the eastern enemy.
Iron Storm is a brutal game with insane difficulty spikes, confusing stealth sections and no music to accompany us. Tho being a rushed and janky game, it's still a fascinating and ambitious project worth to be remembered.

    When I played this games years ago it run like a charm but since then I have win 10+ now using win 11 the game have the mouse lag issue and cannot solve it with the dgVoodoo2 simply because my system deletes it as it lands on my C path. The Zanzarah by Jw looks nice as a remake but I do not know how the game is and what progressed. I personally would have been pushed a potential rework or remake of the game so modern audiences could enjoy this nice game. The arenas and fairy battles was not bad at all even if the story is generic but most games can be great without strong story. The skill system and updgrades on abilities is a good throughout system and with a modern engine with some additional features like character customization (male - female characters), customization on fairy looks if you have similar types like humanoid fairies they can have more facial options, better servering so multiplayer battles or story campaign could work well. These additions could make a potential best seller game just as how Valheim, Palworld managed to get successful with their ideas and niches what these games filled. To be honest most of the pokemon like games are anime based and a lot made in rpg maker or other kind of software and usually platformers. A games like zanzarah could fill a niche with realistic taming, "pet" battles.

      @@BucolicInsights The only solution for mouse lag would be the voodoodg2 but it automatically deleted from my pc once the system detects it. I checked with lower settings run as admin and tried win xp spack 2-3 but the issue is still exist. Other than this the game runs normally but if you are in the menu then the mouse still laggs but slightly better than when I tried last time. I did not tested a battle scene because that actually requires good mouse speed. I checked the only one guide for this issue but as I mentionned it detects as malware and my system will search and remove it. It does even I tried to turn off the defense till I add once I activated it started the witch hunt.

      A remake with modern graphics would not recreate the charming visuals of those hand painted backgrounds which are beautiful to look at. A remaster with some enhancements (avoiding ugly new poligonal models like they did with Squall in ff8's remaster...) would be enough but then I would suggest to play it with an emulator and apply filters and high resolution. @@samflood5631 Basically all the main cast! I didn't like much Albert (just didn't click with me) and, infact, due to "that scene" which I only teased and not spoilered (I played a bit ambigous when I showed the concept arts) I even never mentioned him in the whole video, lol. Regarding the story themes, I think the same as you. The themes of death, sacrifice, slavery and the mythology of its game world are very well treated.

    • @BucolicInsights
      @BucolicInsights 2 місяці тому

      @@nerdgoria3811 it's my favourite jrpg. The battle system is something beyond all others (the next games are a bit faster with some elements being simplified but still great), the story is for the most a light hearted adventure (it starts with a very juvenile premise and then become an epic journey beyond the edges of the known world, full of funny and bizarre people of all kinds). The writing is also superlative with long and articulated dialogues and great focus on the characters' relationships and growth. For the most is nothing that serious but the writers put a great effort in making the characters feel alive and believable in the way they speak and interact. The majority of jrpg I've played had for the most simplistic dialogues, but Grandia is much different. For example there are a miriad of sections where they rest and eat, and there are multiple dialogue options with many branches that enrich everything. The graphics vaunt immense full 3d environments with a bit of interactions in both settlements and dungeons, as well fantastic sprite animations. To finish: the soundtrack is a fucking masterpiece (beautifully orchestrated with good sound quality) and the voice acting is ok and not unlisteanable like, well, valkyrie profile. Personally I found VP terrible to listen and had to download a romhack with the japanese dub. Seriously, if you pass over the jeuvenile and light hearted part, it's an immense jrpg that feels a gen beyond its year of release for the immense production values.

      I started it without knowing anything of the story except "in this old game there are dudes who transform into stilish armored "dragoons" and perhaps they will save the world" (seriously, didn't even know the protagonist name, lol) and, from the bad opinions I always read about, I was expecting some horrible and banal stuff. Instead I found it a nice blend of classic tropes that overally feels like an old adventure anime from the 80's/90's. I didn't have any particular expectations and I liked how the important revelations were gradually built (the 90% is obvious but still liked the execution) and how all the characters' arcs were concluded in the final part that is indeed long. The final CD is not just the final dungeon like some others. Regarding the battles... well, yes, the BS is kinda clunky and a bit slow. Let's say I appreciated the effort in proposing something "different" with the simple QTEs. It pleases me to read differing opinions in the comments, so thx!

    Umm.. making fun of Italian translation, ok. Back in 2000 in Russian translation "Double Slash" was rendered as "Доивге Бгабм" (it's on youtube, btw). And that's not Russian, that's Double Slash written in half-cyrillics, because that's what you get when your 50h+ game in translated by random dudes in a basement in a rush to the print out 1000 bootleg copies of it because local kids won't buy anything in a foreign language... That said surprisingly they translated well enough to the point the plot (mostly) made sense. In retrospect I'm quite impressed, I've seen waaay worse.

Actually, The Legend of Dragoon is a quite renowned JRPG (it's a first party Sony, so just imagine the advertisement back then) and if you do a research you'll find many other retrospectives. Wanna check something more obscure? Look for Koudelka and its successor the Shadow Hearts series (imagine a lovecraftian jrpg with gruesome imagery... at least the original Koudelka and the first shadow hearts can be described this way. Shadow Hearts 2 -a masterpiece!- became more light hearted and the third even more), or Legend of Legaia that I'm actually playing (it's pretty neat)

      @@BucolicInsights Oh, yeah, for me real game shops only existed in "the city" (which is Groningen, they were called Dimension+, and they also sold figurines and anime, and Nedgame, who would rip you off every time they got a chance). We did get a video rental shop in the late 90's that also rented out games. I think I got XS in 1997 or 1998, two years before I got a PS1. Can't believe it ran on our Pentium 75. I remember my dad scratching his head trying to figure out how to get the sound working. We did in the end, but I was terrible at it. But those character descriptions were cool and I remember reading all of them. That PC had issues but a lot of my core gaming memories are on that. Red Alert, Warcraft 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Powerslave, Syndicate Wars (with the Ghost in the Shell trailers in the background). But we always got those games from friends, or as some kinda shareware. Every game we bought legit for PC was always too new and wouldn't run, which was an expensive lesson, but my older brothers had tech savvy friends who ended hooking us up. We didn't get a new PC until 2001, which was a Windows XP machine. We didn't get internet until 2003, and by that time Half Life 2 was about to come out, but I was using that PC to play a bunch of older games I missed out on. So many memories.

    We Bulgarians are not famous with our video game development but this game, along with Celtic Kings and Imperivm: Great Battles of Rome, is a timeless classic. Yes, if we look at these games from today's point of view, they may look very sloppy and with lots of flaws, but we should appreciate what the guys from Haemimont Games have done back in the day with the little resources they've had.
