Castelo de Marvão #portugal
This video is about Marvão, a Portuguese village located in the district of Portalegre, Alentejo region and Alto Alentejo sub-region, situated at the top of the "Serra do Sapoio", at an altitude of 860 meters. Since at least the Roman period, the cliffs of Marvão have been used as a refuge or as a strategic military point. The town was conquered from the Muslims by D. Afonso Henriques during the campaigns of (1160-1166), and was taken again by the Moors in the counter-offensive of Iacube Almançor (1184-1199). It was later retaken by Portugal and in 1299, King D. Dinis took possession of the castle, which was included in the plan for its military rebuilding and became a place of great strategic importance in the wars with the Castilians. In this video you'll see a glimpse of the Marvão Municipal Museum inside the Church of Santa Maria, which was transformed into a Municipal Museum in 1987. We can still recognize the religious function in the structure and there is a 18th century chapel inside, covered in figurative tile panels and with a baroque carved altar. We can also see a a little bit of the Church of Santiago and the religious and military order that was in this area at the time was the Order of Hospitallers, later known as the Order of Malta.
