CRLS improve HMI - ARRI M- Series light quality
Here I reveal how CRLS or mirror boards can improve your light quality. I compare the shadow quality with an ARRI M18 direct and how it looks indirect while reflecting off a CRLS 1 by 1 reflector.
In addition I also demonstrate why parabolic reflections need a fill light to motivate them.

Lighting with a butterfly Eyebrow
Переглядів 2,2 тис.21 день тому
Here's a brief video of what a butterfly eyebrow is and the type of light it produces for set. This a great technique that's not just practical and motivated., but also a great way to keep your lights off the stage and set at a minimum.
Aputure XT26 - BETTER shadows than Arri?!
Переглядів 7 тис.4 місяці тому
In this video I compare the new Aputure XT26's shadow quality to the current punchy lamps which Gaffer and Dops are using to on films and commercials. There's no question now about the output which LEDS are able to produce. But what kind of shadows do the lamps give when being used directly?

The new Arri Orbitor BEAM mount vs the Arri M18

Does the new Arri Orbitor BEAM MOUNT really give the same output of an Arri M18? I did a side by side test and gave the results here.

    Can you make more videos about shadows? What lights have what shadow characteristics, and for what moods would you want to use these certain lights to create certain types of shadows etc.

    Did you put the m18 at the same distance as the CRLS or a bit further back? Because I want to know if it’s the Surface of the reflector or the increased distance (because of the reflector), that’s improves the shadows But cool video

    is there a budget option when you don't have an 8x8 / 12x12beyebrow (crew or gear) available? Foamcore Eyebrow? Softpanel shooting into diffusion straight at the window??

    • @Davidlikeslights
      @Davidlikeslights 19 днів тому

      Yeah a foam core also works but obviously the larger the surface the better! A panel like a skypanal also can probably do the trick. I wanted to emphasize that a crls without motivation usually looks a bit odd. For example in low light situations they have to be used wisely 😊

      This would cool. The next video will cover the use of cine reflectors and how they improve hmi shadow quality. I'm also considering displaying the M series and how their quick spread and output is much greater than cobs.

      @@VLK2024yeah you mean those reflectors! I know That's what aputure call them, but I have a hard time calling them that! Since they are actually more like degree dishes. But the shadows they make aren't too bad or too good from what I remember.

    Nice clear explanation thanks - I just have two questions: why is it called a butterfly eyebrow light? and why have you set up the flags the way you have outside the window?

    • @Davidlikeslights
      @Davidlikeslights 24 дні тому

      Heyo, I put a flag at the back of the m40 to stop any kind of spill from the lamp. Between the light and the barn doors or even between the barn doors there can be spill jumping onto set. It's a good practice. Especially if you gel the light. The gel on Infront of the light can infract light and make a mess on your set. Hope that's helpful 😊

    The Xt26 is a fine light but having worked extensively with HMI, tungsten, and the XT26 I have to say the m18 is my favorite, the xt26 is extremely heavy and requires a 60amp bates for power where as the m18 can plug into the wall, retains a flood and spot control, and is much lighter and easier to set up and move. The xt26 is very nice but still ant beat Arri HMI as of right now.

    You have to take distance into consideration. Even with a fresnel unit the shadows arent going to be great shoved right up to the window. The reason why we use larger lights is they can be placed further from the subject. Nothing is going to work as well as a true fresnel. So far aputure hasnt been able to make one that works. In the US we have 120V but theres a couple tricks to extract 220V from a wall outlet.

    HMI has never quite felt like real sun to me; even 18k fresnels. They always feel like reflected sunlight, like off of a building window. HMIs have inconsistent color, and not quite a full spectrum. "Close enough" for most, but not quite. The best is a large tungsten fresnel; 5k,10k, and 20k frensels on a soundstage coming in through a set window. It really does look and feel like sun. The infrared heat they project is very similar to the sun, and it helps actors feel their light as they move through a set. I've never seen an LED that comes close; they just don't have the spectrum in the longer wave lengths where it really matters most for skin tones.

    • @Davidlikeslights
      @Davidlikeslights 3 місяці тому

      Agreed... Used the 20 k tungsten fresnel two months ago. It looked incredible. But wow the amount of electricity use is not sustainable at all. I'm wondering how long it will be before we can get this light quality with LEDs... I think it's close to be honest. Maybe 2 years?

    • @craigrryan86
      @craigrryan86 3 місяці тому

      @@Davidlikeslights 100 amps per leg in the grand scheme isn't that much. You're just running one 220v whip to the light, and on a soundstage, it's not much for the power system. Same for any 500A tow plant. As far as LEDs coming close...probably never. The cooling needed for a COB would be gigantic, and the optics needed to spot and flood a chip that big would be impractical. Mole has an LED 20k, but it is not the same. Comparable maybe, but not the same. Also, I think with large lamps like this the IR heat isn't always a negative. Many many actors have commented that they miss the warmth of tungsten. I'd say that alone is a good reason to use them still. If they can help talent give a better/more authentic performance, that's enough for me.

    This is a completely UNFAIR comparison. You don't even need to turn the light on to know that an open-face lamp will not have a clean shadow. YOU SHOULD COMPARE WITH A 6K HMI FRESNEL. Par lamps are not meant to give you a clean shadow but punch. They are intended to be used far away (the shadow becomes much cleaner) or through fabrics as well as bounced.

    • @Davidlikeslights

      Well to be fair, he also showed the Aputure light with its reflector dish. And that was also better than the reflector style Arri light. If you really care about shadow sharpness at higher output, the Dedolight 1200D HMI focusing head has shadow sharpness on par with a bare 60watt LED if not better.
