First trip out the in the kayak since we moved! I also bought a new truck, so hauling the kayak is 10 times easier than it was.

HOT day of fishing in the Atchafalaya basin!

The day started off slowly, but the action quickly picked up, but so did the heat. It was so hot that my camera kept restarting itself and turning itself off due to overheating. Ignore the date stamp on the video, as it is due to one of the automatic restarts on the camera. This was filmed this morning.

Fishing the basin in the pouring rain

First of all, I apologize for the sound issues towards the end of the video. The rain soaked my mic and muffled everything, and I couldn't help it being as it was absolutely storming. I decided to fish a spot that I've never been to before, and it turned out to be well worth the trip.
Speckled trout fishing in the rain
Переглядів 1753 місяці тому
So I decided to try and get away from all the stress for a day, and decided I would go catch dinner in the form of white trout and speckled sea trout. Only problem is it was raining off and on all morning long with VERY high winds and tons of mosquitoes. I managed to catch a good number of white trout and undersized spotted sea trout, but landed a REALLY nice one at the end of the day. All said...

    Finally, a video on a Pelican brand kayak. I heard that their plastic, Ram X, is different in composition from other kayak manufacturers. If it's HDPE, then I should be good to go. Thanks!

    • @TheAverageFisherman99
      @TheAverageFisherman99 16 днів тому

      It's HDPE. The way it is different is that instead of one solid roto-molded piece, it is three separate layers with the "grain" running perpendicular to each other. They are then heated to bond them together, with the outer most later being smoother. This large multilayer sheet of HDPE is then heated again and formed into shape in a mold. The hull and top pieces are made separately, then those are then heated under pressure and bonded together to make the kayak. ALL of my kayak fishing videos are filmed in my pelican catch hydryve 2 kayak.

    Another thing that every line manufacturer does is the never list on the box when it was made. It could be 10 year old line on the shelf right next to new line. Mono will deteriorate over time, especially if it was near a window or in sunlight.

  • @dannycutchin7684
    @dannycutchin7684 28 днів тому

    Big question, so when you look at your fishing reel specs on what lb test it holds, are their recommendations based off of true diameter, or the typical diameter of any lb test?

    • @TheAverageFisherman99
      @TheAverageFisherman99 28 днів тому

      Good question. Different manufacturers specify differently, which is ALSO a problem. Most higher-end rods (g.loomis, Abu, lew's) go by an approximation measurement. It's a rating based on the approximate average diameter...neither true spec nor over-spec, but an average of both. I wish we had a standardized system here in the U.S. it would eliminate a LOT of these issues.

      @@TheAverageFisherman99I have a question on fishing line I forgot to ask, I have monofilament, although I want to get braided eventually, on my Abu Garcia max pro, which I got as a combo from a Walmart. Anyway, is monofilament easier to damage, because when I fished with it, it did well, but a few times I think I damaged the line and lost a nice lure to the pond. The rod, which I forgot to mention earlier is a 7 footer medium and I believe fast action with am 1/8 (I think) to 1 or around there ounce lure capacity. It came with the max pro as a combo but when I fished with it felt like it had great sensitivity, but of course I’ve only ever fished with 20+ year old rods at my Mimi and papas before. I just love fishing there though, I’m only in high school but I know the area very well. The feel of being at my Mimi and papas with that new rod and the feel of the cast was so nice with that new rod. Anyway this is a long, long comment and I’m going to wrap it up with the question on the line. Is monofilament easily damaged or am I being too rough with the line?

    • @TheAverageFisherman99
      @TheAverageFisherman99 Місяць тому

      Mono is pretty tough. Unless you cut it on rocks, etc. To answer more directly, no. Mono is not easily damaged. You may have gotten a bad spool, or used an old spool of line or something. It's extremely rare when I've had mono fail me, and it was virtually always my own fault when it did. Backlashes can kink the line, which creates a weak spot, or tying a faulty knot, or abrasion damage, or UV damage will cause it to fail. Mono in good condition is probably the LEAST likely of all fishing lines to get damaged. It is certainly tougher than fluorocarbon, and FAR more abrasion resistant than braid.
