Issues in Remote Tanzanian Mountains- XR600R Africa Dualsport Adventure
In this video we ride into the tropical forest of Tanzania’s Usumbaara Mountains. The problems start adding up as quickly as the altitude does. We ride to the end of the road and beyond. Sal crashes and her chain falls off on a steep rocky trail. We came looking for adventure and we definitely found it here.
We hope you enjoy following along on the journey. Feel free to comment with any questions. Remember to subscribe and give us a thumbs up if you like it, Cheers!

    When we rode around the world in 2010-13 this stretch of road from Nanyuki on equator to Moyale border took 3 days as there was no road - it was like a rocky river bed trail with very little traffic and lots of punctures and broken suspension. In fact most of bikes at Jungle Junction in Nairobi had been broken by this stretch . Turbi was very remote and we stayed at police post - this was the scene of a massacre at a school a few years before - we also road further west along the lakes - very very remote and beautiful - tough riding - but beautiful. Later Sudan to Egypt was a bureaucratic headache -- we camped everywhere so no need to look at hotels

      Thank you for commenting, that’s very interesting! We heard that the old “road” was pretty bad. Our suspension definitely had a good work out heading to Lake Turkana and back. The main highway is very nice now and somewhat straight /boring. Even with the new road, Turbi still feels very remote. We filled up fuel out of some plastic bottles and had a hot Coca-Cola with a large number flies. As you probably know, Sudan is a no go now and Ethiopia is very difficult to get into with your own vehicle, but we are determined. What was your route through Asia? We’re looking ahead to cross China or Mongolia. Hope you continue to follow along! Cheers

    Lovely episode guys … we waited too long 😄 Love those XR600’s … a bucket-list bike for the years to come. Love your updates and travels, don’t let us wait so long for the next one 🙏🏼😉 Echoing @yorkchris10 have you guys considered mousses? Your speeds are perfect for mousses if I’m not mistaken (I had them in my KTM 300Exc and we did a lot of exploration riding similar to this (a little more off-the-actual-road but the mousse was a breath of fresh air, not needing to worry about punctures). Safe travels 🙌🏼

      Thanks for watching, Richard, we're glad you enjoyed the video! We love the XR's too, they're hard to beat. We have thought about mousse. We tried it one time, but it didn't go well the tube was too far gone. We might put some in next time we have brand new tubes if we can find it. We'll keep getting the videos out, they take a while to make! We tend to get caught up in the travel and are slow to release them haha. So far the plan is to keep heading North, there are a lot of obstacles so we will see how things unfold. Cheers!

    You're not too far from Kilimanjaro. I don't think you're allowed to climb it with a motorcycle. Maybe you are on the highest motorable road?? Have you thought about mousse in the front wheel? The bikes are probably light enough and low speeds....

    Hey im back in comments. I thought you stopped travellin? I was not getting your updates! But it was likely, that i was busy abroad. I could not move around for a good three an a half months doin lotsa paperwork. Jus rerturned home under time pressure from jus south of mex. City. In Cuernavaca.! It was, about 3,400 miles 5,500kms. All was a huge struggle. The 86 honda rebel 250cc got me to portland. 90% of trip was desert, no shade average 95 fahr. Everyday. Major burn out. Did same trip 10 yrs. Ago on KLR650. TOOK ME 10 days from oaxaca mex. Which was maybe 500 more miles total. I was likely averaging 75 to 85 miles per hour. This time it was 14 days, with half day off, but average was 65to 75 mph. As i burned out id wake later everyday, then ride 2 hours into the nite. Chain lube every 700 miles,oops, and no oil change ,which shoulda been after 2,000 miles. But bike burns oil, so in total i topped off the 1.6 litres max. Level with 1.25 litres of new oil. In portland just 330 miles from finish , on my last day, the engine crankseal popped out, which is very common on that engine. Lucky it was at start up on wet cold morning and saw the oil leak out of the dry case, charging side of engine! In rain immediately saw rainbow colored oil drops on wet pavement.. got a ride home. Borrowed a pick up truck and retrieved the bike 4 days later. Now its back home in victoria b.c. and running with new seal. Took me a good 5 hours work to remove, replace oil seal. Singled handed, literally. 10 days till new seal arrived. Hey check out "moto giant" youtuber ! Severe crash !! 30 days ago. Daily updates on his channel, give him support in any way, sub and like, he lost lower leg and more! One arm tom, update, keep the rubber down folks!!! Talk later sal an ethan!

    • @2kickaround
      @2kickaround Місяць тому

      Hey Tom thanks for the update! We’re still traveling just slow to upload our latest videos. Sorry to hear about rebel losing its main seal, but luckily you caught it in time. That sounds pretty brutal being 95 degrees all the way up from Mexico but then again that’s pretty much what Africa is like most the time… so we can relate! Our next couple videos are heading out to the Kenyan Coast, which is pretty awesome place! We’ll check out the UA-camr that was injured. We also just read about a Russian girl that was killed crossing Turkey on her motorbike. So when you heading back down to Mexico? I think I would prefer to be in Victoria this time of the year. Mexico is not very comfortable in August and September. Great to hear from you. Thanks again for the update!

    Should you be in the middle of Africa if you can’t patch a hole in a tube??

  • @titaniumgear690
    @titaniumgear690 3 місяці тому

    Two types of tubes... Butyl and Natural Rubber. When butyl fails it can fail catastrophically (like a big tear). Natural rubber tends to fail more likely with a puncture. Butyl tubes tend to hold air over a period of days. Natural rubber will slowly leak a small amount of air over a period of days. (but you check your tire pressure every morning right?) That said, I have found it much more difficult to get patches to stick to butyl. Also, I found patching is more difficult on Ultra Heavy Duty tubes than Heavy Duty tubes and have found the Heavy Duty ones are plenty durable. Bridgestone Heavy Duty Tubes are Natural Rubber. Michelin are Butyl as far as I know.

    • @2kickaround
      @2kickaround 3 місяці тому

      Very interesting info! We had a couple tubes that failed big time. These must have been Butyl. When they failed they split perfecting in half as if they we cut with sharp scissors. Ultra Heavy Duty are difficult to mount and agree that if an object punctures a HD tube it will also puncture an Ultra one. Think we'll pick up some Bridgestone HD tubes when we can! Thanks for following along. Cheers!

    There can be different materials been used for making tubes so there is a need for the right patch to use. Otherwise a patch won‘t stick to the tube. Sorry for being not more precise. That‘s all I’ve heard. Good luck and right save! 👋🏼

    • @2kickaround
      @2kickaround 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for commenting. That could definitely affect the quality of the repair. We are starting to figure out patching is more of a temporary solution until a new tube can be found. Cheers and thanks for watching!

    And for large tears in the tube .i also saw the same mechanics use a piece of tube and an old piston head to patch a tube they would take a bit piece of old tube make a patch out of it bigger than the hole take a bit of gasoline pour it into the upside down piston head place the patch on the tube and then the piston head and light the gasoline on fire and let it burn.....it would melt the 2 tubes together and make a solid piece ....some of the tubes had 30-40 patches like this on them.

    I learned a trick in Colombia to make a patch stick and work...all the prep your doing is correct what these Moto mechanics would do is apply a liberal amount of glue to the clean roughed up area then take a lighter and light the glue on fire and blow it out quickly don't let it burn ..do this until the glue doesn't light on fire install patch and then stand on the patched tube for 5 min , i used this on the 3 flats i got on my 3.5y journey Around the world and still use this method today at the bike shop ...

    Putting patches on tubes , make sure the area is is clean around hole , then roughen up with sand paper , put glue on , let it dry about 10 mins . Put patch on . Blow up inertube . Make sure inside the tyre is free from debri & thorns etc . When putting back together dont trap or nip tube . Good luck on trip , looks great . Not jealous at all . I lie 😃 Valves leak too .

      Thank you for the great advice Russell. We've done all the above but still have challenges with pathing tubes. Starting to realize patches are only a temporary solution until we can find new tubes. At least it seams that if we do any prolonged riding on hot tarmac the patches tend to fail. There's an art to fixing flats. One of these days we'll hopefully master it! Cheers and thanks for watching.

      Also don’t put repaired tube back before glue has set as it may stick to inner tyre ( tire ) . Can you tell where I’m from ? 😁

    I always put a new tube in when a puncture on the inner diameter of a bicycle tube. Patches of any size or overlap don't hold.

      Thanks for the comment Chris. Starting to realize patches are only a temporary solution until we can find new tubes. Cheers!

      @@2kickaround the only time I've been forced to throw out a tube is on inner diameter. I've got tubes with multiple patches on outside diameter and are 'okay'. No-one seems to be able to explain inner diameter patches not holding except it may be on a seam. I've put patches on outer diameter seam without problem. Someone said it's the size of the hole caused potentially by a spoke, but I've tried large patches. Your NATO Prof seems to have 'fixed' it??

      Thanks for watching Jay! Besides the leopard in Zambia, and the pride of lions in Tanzania, not so many cats just a lot of lion prints. Apparently there’s leopards where we are camping tonight. We’ll keep an eye out! Cheers
