Hi fu mi hachigaeshi ‘consists of two pieces respectively called “Hifumi No Shirabe” (Beginning) and “Hachigaeshi” (Returning the Bowl, A thanks for Alms Revived). ‘Originally the term Shirabe meant to check the sounds and move into the proper frame of mind before performing Honkyoku. Thus, “Hifumi No Shirabe” was not considered to be an independent piece. Musically, “Shirabe” does not have man...

Any recommendations on setup for that?

    Hi Markus! Thank you so much for your clear explanation of muraiki. It is very helpful and I look forward to try and improve on it; my muraiki is very uncontrolled and I´m out of breath after a second or so, like you described (I am also pretty much a beginner, to make things even worse!). You also made Hon Shirabe more insightful for me, much appreciated. Now I can´t call myself a pro, but from what I know of mixing/mastering audio, saturation/distortion adds odd or even harmonics (or a blend of the two). So that does made a sound more dense, but always in relationship to the original tone. To me, muraiki sounds more random. A bit like blending in noise (as in the noise generator on a synth). Your graph also shows that, I think. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Thanks again! Best, Charles

    • @MarkusGuhe
      @MarkusGuhe 29 днів тому

      Thanks, I'm glad the video is helpful! 🙏 I think you make a very good point on the saturation question. It makes a lot of sense to see it more as noise. I guess I was thinking of saturation first, because it's still possible to identify the pitch (fundamental frequency) of the note. But it's true that the more you add muraiki, the more noisy it becomes and it get more difficult to make out the pitch. So probably it's again more a gradual effect, not an absolute ...

    How to you handle vibrato in Kan?

    • @MarkusGuhe
      @MarkusGuhe Місяць тому

      Just shake your head! 😆 Well, it's not really different from otsu, but maybe it's easier if you start practising with smaller movements first, because keeping notes stable in kan can be a bit more difficult. Also identify on one point on your chin on which the shakuhachi pivots. Then only move from the middle to one side, not both sides. As you can see it's a bit difficult to describe in words ...

    • @johnyentes6643
      @johnyentes6643 28 днів тому

      @@MarkusGuhe I feel like I can do it pretty wel with Ro in Kan. It’s gets more difficult with the higher notes though. It’s also pretty easy on my 2.7. Nearly impossible on my 1.6 though. I just need to fine tune my movements I guess.

    • @MarkusGuhe
      @MarkusGuhe 27 днів тому

      @@johnyentes6643 The higher the note you're producing on a shakuhachi, the smaller the opening of your mouth has to be. So, it's more difficult to play high notes on a shorter instrument than on a longer one, and it's also more difficult to play high kan notes compared to otsu. In other words, it requires more fine motor control, and that takes some time to develop. Add to that that your embouchure needs to be flexible enough that the changes in blowing angle (which are needed to produce kubi furi) don't make you lose the tone, and you have a bit of a challenge. 'Just' try not to tense up for high notes and practise and it'll get easier over time. ✌

    Thanks Markus and Riley, I too really enjoyed this interview. I think I might need to carve out the time to listen again.

    Wow! Thoroughly enjoy the interview. Part biography, part history lesson, and part music lesson (loved the discussion of pitch at the end). I also want to complement you on your approach to the interview Markus. For me, you brought a perfect mix of respect, humility, and sincerity that really engaged Lee-先生 to open up with his deep knowledge and insights. Can’t wait for part 2!

      Shakuhachi notation is confusing, but it works well, once you get the hand of it! 🙂
