Thus, “Hifumi No Shirabe” was not considered to be an independent piece. Musically, “Shirabe” does not have man...

A 1.6 shakuhachi is sometimes considered a ‘Haru no umi’ (春の海) flute because it is needed to play this very popular piece. But for playing honkyoku its use is a bit limited. In this video I’m sharing my thoughts about a new 1.6 shakuhachi by the maker Kawasemi after having played it for a few weeks. That video helped me on deciding on my first shakuhachi, thank you. Just ordered my first shakuhachi, a yuu! I cant wait to for it to arrive and fail a lot while learning. Just producing strong notes with the correct pitch will be so much fun and challenging!
Grateful to both of you Markus and Jim.

Hey Markus, I am really interested in buying a shakuhachi, but don't really know where I can buy one without getting scammed. Do you have any reliable sources to buy shakuhachi?
Hi, I'm glad to hear you're interested! The European Shakuhachi Society has a long list of shakuhachi makers, so I recommend to have a look there first: shakuhachisociety.eu/people/makers/ If you’re in Japan or it’s easy to ship from Japan, have a look a Mejiro, a shop in Tokyo that ships worldwide. mejiro-japan.com/ If you are in the USA, you should have a look at Monty Levenson’s website: www.shakuhachi.com/ Just send me an email if you have more questions.
@@MarkusGuhe thank you for the advice, I am in Belgium Btw
@MauroNijssen No worries. Just get in touch if you want to sort out something within Europe.
Riley's advice is straight from guts and pragmatic
I couldn't agree more! 🙏
Great video. I play with Tethera (we're good friends of Mugenkyo and are coming up to the dojo in March!). I'm looking at one of these primarily for practice but I'm also very interested in some of the fun this could unlock for performance. Have your hooked it up to a loop pedal at all for live looping? Any recommendations on setup for that?
Thank you! 🙏 Great to hear you'll be at the dojo! I don't have a dedicated loop pedal but am just using the computer for that. The setup changes, so I don't think there's any particular recommendation I'm afraid.
Thank you for this insightful interview. Such useful advise.
Thanks! 🙏 Yes, I definitely learned a lot!

Fantastic, an interview with Sir Riley Lee; exceptional occasion. But why not taken care about the sound quality? Lot of back ground noise, too much bad acoustic overall :-(

Hello Markus-san! Is muraiki the same technique used in the Mike Oldfield's song "The Wind Chimes, pt. 1"?
Hm, I don't really hear that. You're probably referring to the synthesized sounds, which I think sound much cleaner and are also produced with a very different instrument/technique. Interesting idea though! 👍
I cracked up when I saw the Black Betty clip
Such a great song, right? 😉
Thank you so much for your time and effort you put into this video! I have a question, What the difference is between Meri and Otsu? also Kari and Kan.
I'm glad if it's useful! 🙏 Meri: lowering of pitch; kari: raising pitch; otsu: lower (1st) octave; kari: higher (2nd) octave. There's a video on how to play kan somewhere here as well; maybe that's helpful?
@@MarkusGuhe Thank you for the reply! I've seen the Kan video but I will watch it again to better understand🙏
Hi Markus! Thank you so much for your clear explanation of muraiki. It is very helpful and I look forward to try and improve on it; my muraiki is very uncontrolled and I´m out of breath after a second or so, like you described (I am also pretty much a beginner, to make things even worse!). You also made Hon Shirabe more insightful for me, much appreciated. Now I can´t call myself a pro, but from what I know of mixing/mastering audio, saturation/distortion adds odd or even harmonics (or a blend of the two). So that does made a sound more dense, but always in relationship to the original tone. To me, muraiki sounds more random. A bit like blending in noise (as in the noise generator on a synth). Your graph also shows that, I think. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Thanks again! Best, Charles
Thanks, I'm glad the video is helpful! 🙏 I think you make a very good point on the saturation question. It makes a lot of sense to see it more as noise. I guess I was thinking of saturation first, because it's still possible to identify the pitch (fundamental frequency) of the note. But it's true that the more you add muraiki, the more noisy it becomes and it get more difficult to make out the pitch. So probably it's again more a gradual effect, not an absolute ...
Thank youMarkus , so informative
Thanks Damon, I'm glad to hear that! 🙏
Thank you 🙏🏼
My pleasure! Thanks for watching! 🙏
How to you handle vibrato in Kan?
Just shake your head! 😆 Well, it's not really different from otsu, but maybe it's easier if you start practising with smaller movements first, because keeping notes stable in kan can be a bit more difficult. Also identify on one point on your chin on which the shakuhachi pivots. Then only move from the middle to one side, not both sides. As you can see it's a bit difficult to describe in words ...
@@MarkusGuhe I feel like I can do it pretty wel with Ro in Kan. It’s gets more difficult with the higher notes though. It’s also pretty easy on my 2.7. Nearly impossible on my 1.6 though. I just need to fine tune my movements I guess.
@@johnyentes6643 The higher the note you're producing on a shakuhachi, the smaller the opening of your mouth has to be. So, it's more difficult to play high notes on a shorter instrument than on a longer one, and it's also more difficult to play high kan notes compared to otsu. In other words, it requires more fine motor control, and that takes some time to develop. Add to that that your embouchure needs to be flexible enough that the changes in blowing angle (which are needed to produce kubi furi) don't make you lose the tone, and you have a bit of a challenge. 'Just' try not to tense up for high notes and practise and it'll get easier over time. ✌
Helpful and funny, as always. Thank you, Markus!
Thank you! 🙏 I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This is fantastic! I've been practicing on my shinobue which I became interested in after learning about the Awa Odori dance. I've found a few videos from Japan where the song is played, but they're all a bit different. Your rendition sounds like it could of been recorded right there on the streets. That you're playing the drums and percussion parts too is great. Thank you very much! I've got a lot of practicing to do (I have played a tradition western flute for over 50 years.) Are you reading music while playing this?
Thank you very much! 🙏 Usually, I do play from memory, but here I think here I was reading from the notation. (A little help when filming ... 😉)
