2016 Triumph Bonneville T120 service and first ride 2024
I documented a "basic plus" (oil/air filter/plugs) service on my 2016 Triumph Bonneville T120, and then took it out for a shakedown ride. It's now ready for the 2024 riding season!

Nice 👍. The LT is really the my favourite K1100.
Nice. But where's the campervan
Crammed the garage so full of bikes and cars, there is no space for a camper van.
@@garagemoneypit Fair enough UKRM :)
I’ve always wanted a K100 RS. This video has prompted me to start looking…
I'm on the lookout for a 16V parts bike at the moment, and if I come across a nice example of an RS I'll be happy to get in touch. The 8V ones are a lot easier to find and I see a fair number in nice condition, but I do prefer the better suspension and especially brakes on the 16V.
Nice video. Love your bike. I have 2022 T100 so not exactly the same. But, very similar.
Thank you. This bike really surprised me - I initially bought it as a quick stop gap after a deer took care of my R1200GS Adventure, but it's really grown on me and is likely to hang around for a while.
The only cool bike on ur channel - made one video on it with by far the most views & you didnt even get it to 10k rpm or make any more videos of it?? Do you still own it?
Cool bikes are in the eye of the beer holder :). Not that this one isn't cool... Yes, I still own it, it's just been relegated to "need to tackle some of the smaller/quicker projects first" status. Unfortunately it's turned into one of those projects that open fresh rabbit holes every time I look. It will reappear on the channel, but it'll be a little while.
I have a red one just like it. Engine built, .50 over pistons, dynatech coils & ignition, new wiring harness, etc... i fully restored it myself (except the engine build was done in Colorado - they did a shit job and i had to fix a ton of stuff & buy a whole bolt kit as several were missing). Id really love to put an exhaust on it and put the K&N pod filters back on because they sounded awesome but had issues getting it running right with them
Good deal
Late to the party (story of my life!), but great video mate. My 1990 K100RS 16v has been sat in my garage unused for 2 years due to a leaking front master cylinder (a new one of which is a little cost prohibitive) and also because I've spent all my time fettling/repairing/riding and completely enjoying a '74 Mk2 Norton Commando. Your video has inspired me to get on with sorting the brick! Oh, and yes - it HAS to be K100RS panels. The space ship style 1100 hasn't aged well to me. Cheers 👍
I have a 2006 GSA and am completely happy with it!
They are great bikes, and frankly if it wasn't for the deer that knocked me off this GSA I would probably still have it.
Thank you for the induction Pro review. That's the one I'm looking at as I need a mesh jacket. Thank you
I did a lot of miles on my K100RS - loved it. averaged about 220 miles per tank. I hated that oil sight glass. Found it very difficult to see with the full fairing on. The side-boxes are enormous, but great if you are trying to carry a lot. I preferred the city-boxes which were about half the width.
It's odd - I've owned five flying bricks of various types, and I never had one that had City cases even though it would've made a lot of sense when I was commuting on one. Maybe I should try to find a set.
@@garagemoneypit My K was second hand, and came with the big boxes. Great when packing for a couple of weeks! I managed to track down a pair of city boxes, and they made a real difference when filtering through traffic. I used the bike for commuting through rain snow and flood. Only let me down once. An HT coil failed and stopped providing spark. Luckily my bike had two HT coils, each driving 2 cylinders. I travelled home on just the two cylinders.
And this is a K100 RS? I think the K100 had other weels and braks? It‘s not a K1100 RS?
It’s a K100RS *16V*, not a regular K100RS. Basically a K1 with K100RS bodywork. Pretty rare model, only made for two years at the end of the K100RS model run. It is however wearing the wrong bodywork - someone “upgraded” it to K1100RS bodywork at some point. I intend to address that issue once I’ve dealt with some of the remaining minor issues.
Lovely bike!
Was that whining an over tightened cam chain? It happens when people have a stubborn or seized cam 'horseshoe' and resort to tapping down on the cam tensioner bolt at the top, instead of the proper tensioner bolt below it.
I guess I should really have a closer look at it. The whining is much more audible in the video than in person, but given that this bike is from the time of not-so-great Honda camchain tensioners and people keep mentioning this one the video, I might have too much hopium in my ears :)
@@garagemoneypit I just replaced my entire cam chain system and she feels and sounds great for it. After market 'horseshoes' like that from David Silver Spares are aluminum with a copper bush and that works better, ie not seizing. Cheaper too!
My 2016 bonnie T120 has the original Triumph cruise fitted so can be done.
Thanks for letting me know. My understanding is that there are some differences on the really early T120s, but I haven't checked if mine falls into that category.

from what little i know (i'm rebuilding a master cylinder on my yam xvs650) brake fluid wil suck water out of the air from the smallest of small gaps. rubber brake lines are porus and over time water will wick it's way through the rubber and start eating seals. that's why brake fluid has a service interval. if you've never changed the fluid in the 8 years you've had her i wouldn't be surprised it was eating things.
You’re correct about regular brake fluid being hygroscopic. I think my mistake was to assume that the brake fluid looking fresh for the front brake - because that looked like it was 1-2 year old given the climate I live in - would mean in the same for the rear brake. Of course, it could just be the master cylinder being fed up with life…
@@garagemoneypit I've learnt not to assume anything xD I had a car with "timing chain rattle" that ended up being 2 knackered camshafts and oil starvation issues. There's not all that much to a master cylinder, a couple of umbrella shaped seals and a piston. you could rebuild it yourself if you wanted to save some money. my money on what happened is the rear most umbrella seal went (in particular, a tear or a pinhole), then only the dust seal held back the fluid. On my yam the front seal (pump) was the suspect one, it was barely holding on, so i had a really spongy brake. after i pulled the thing apart and reseated everything it just wouldn't build pressure. but it also didn't leak. a 'smoking gun' of bad fluid would be lots of little black bits in the reseviour, the colour of the fluid may be acceptable (because someone may have recently changed it) but any grit or cloud is a huge hint that stuff is being kicked up into the fluid/has been eaten by it.
@@davidl9230you're definitely correct on the assumption part. I should've learned this by now after a few decades of fiddling with cars and motorcycles. But then again, I probably wouldn't be doing this still if I didn't retain a sliver of optimism.
@@garagemoneypittry not be so hard on yourself, every day we all learn things :) Honestly, i've only learnt what i know because there's a shortage of decent mechanics around. Messing with brakes isn't something i'd have done by choice. Absolutely, being optimistic is the best way, as much as it may sound like i'm a pessimist with things, i find being able to question things means i get to understand the root of things and knowing is what gives me a lot of optimism that even if something is eally\ bad, something can be done. That car with the bad camshafts btw was done really cheaply because i knew someone that was willing to try some used camshafts and because i understood the risks of them i was comfortable taking that risk where most people would have just scrapped her. I then had that car for a whole 2 years after that before it went to her new owner.
Thanks for sharing!

For sure it will look better with the correct body panels !
I agree, all I have to do is find a set.

@@krisowler367 I’d really appreciate that. From memory, it’s the belly pan that is different on the 16V model and thus harder to find, and it’s the same for the whole production run. Unfortunately that was only two years and IIRC BMW only made about a thousand of this model.
@@garagemoneypit who knows.. things can heppen.... will ask him to keep his eye out for you.
When you use the off-road algorithm, the vest is not as likely to deploy in a low speed get off, so the chest protectors are there instead. That way you don’t have to replace CO2 cartridges so often.
That makes sense. I don't have the off road algorithm activated anyway, so maybe removing the chest armor is a good idea.
I didn’t need the chest armor because I do on road touring, so I took them out. That made a difference in the airflow.
Ah, that makes sense. I don't really go offroading either, at least not voluntarily. Probably should consider removing the chest armour to see how much it changes the airflow.
Good review. I picked the Rally because it flows more air than the standard, I think because of the back armor. Very meshy and comfy when I wear it. A hint in hot weather is to wear an LD Comfort base layer under it. My Klim Induction is also AA rated, same as the Induction Pro. For 3 season jacket, I wear an Alpinestars Monteria because its really comfy to wear, waterproof, lots of vents and it’s AA rated with level 2 armor. Also has expansion for there tech air, which I assume works with the Klim vest too.
Interesting re the additional airflow the Rally offers. Having not ridden with the standard vest, I assumed the airflow through the Rally would be slightly less due to the additional chest armour. Also, thanks for the correction re the protection level of the Induction jackets.
I'm a Klim Fanboy, enjoyed the video 👍
These are actually my first set of Klim jackets I bought for myself. I had bought a Klim mesh jacket for my wife and really liked the quality. So far I'm really liking them!

I just got the 4V 1991 K100rs with 16k miles on it for $2500. I had no idea what I was buying. I traded some plumbing work for the bike. Think I may have gotten a deal
If it's in decent shape, I think you did get a deal.
Yes, it was garaged and started periodically. The guy is in the middle of moving and lost the only key. Luckily the BMW in Germany is still able to make a key using only the numbers off if the bike. So it's cold here in the states and I need a month for it to warm up anyway:)
I’m still running my 1994 K1100rs. Funny thing is I’m looking at buying a new bike as I’ve never owned New. Then I come back to my K1100rs. I felt like I was cheating on her by looking at a new model. Lol😅
Same here😂
I rode Harleys for over 30 years before I bought my K . . 2 different worlds. I'd say leave the wind shield of, get in the wind :)
Depends on the weather - in the summer, I'll definitely have to take it off but it's nice to have the option for a long distance ride to reduce the fatigue.
K100 FTW. Love mine. Got a ride video up. Cheers from Germany.
Schönen Gruss nach Deutschland :)
I saw you install lower pegs on your BMW GS motorcycle. I’m curious if you also lowered the foot pegs on your BMW R100RS or on this BMW K bike? I am 6 ft 2 in and trying to find a way to lower the foot pegs on my 1986 R80RT. 😎👍
I have not lowered them on the K100RS. My main reason for lowering pegs is to make the knee angle more comfortable for me as I have fairly mild arthritis/wear in my knees and that’s a bit of a lost cause on the K RS due to its fairly sporty knee angle. Also not lowered on the R100RS - the geometry on the /7 airheads works for me pretty much out of the box, so I never felt the need to lower them on any airhead I’ve owned. Sorry I couldn’t provide more helpful information.
My son in law is a welder. I’m going to see if he can fabricate a lower peg. Keep the shiny side up!😎👍
With such age, can it still handle long rides?
Yes, no problem at all. The flying brick BMWs are usually good for several hundred thousand miles if well maintained. Obviously not all aren’t these days as they have been cheap for a long time, but this one is in good shape.
@@garagemoneypit That's good to know. I hope I'll be lucky to get a good one in the future. That's my dream bike ever since I started getting interested with big bikes.
@@kimarisvidarxx66cool. One thing to keep in mind is that the K1 and the K100RS 16V are getting a little problematic getting parts for as not many were made. I think for daily use, either an 8V K100RS or a K1100RS/K1100LT might be the better choice due to better parts availability.
@@garagemoneypit I'll also have that in mind, as I don't think the parts will be readily available here in my country. Thanks for the info and for sharing your wonderful bike with us
A beautiful bike. I only wish Triumph had made the wheels tubeless. Do you miss the BMW R1200GS?
Thank you. While I haven't done the conversion myself, my bike has been converted to tubeless tires and my understanding is that it's not that hard to do. Do I miss the GS? Actually, not that much. I don't generally ride off road other than the occasional unpaved road around here, so I don't need a GS and the Triumph does pretty much all I need from a bike and is as comfortable to me as the GS. That said, I do like BMWs but I think if I get another oilhead BMW, I'm probably looking at a 1150RT or 1200RT instead.
Show triumph t120 pls , not your face😂
Hi, I also have a Schuberth C4 Pro, bought it last year from a shop. So I fitted it on in shop. I had same issue with chin guard but guy in store showed me to hold it with a finger when putting helmet on, then it just slips under my chin. Works very well for me and I am very happy with this helmet.
Thanks for pointing that out. I use a similar technique when putting the chin guard down. I probably could've explained this better - the problem for me is not putting on the helmet, but my problem is actually that my chin is hitting the inside of the chin bar when I wear it, not while putting it on.
Ok it's not a Superduke...but rather nice nevertheless. It's 43 years since I had a Unit engine T120 😁 Those satin finish engine cases are lush. It is a surprise the OE wheels are not tubeless and Triumph are still cheaping out on front calipers. There are various Kaoko and Atlas style "cruise control" type friction locks that work really well and honestly? the lack of electronic complication is welcome.
I hear you re the lack of electronic complications, but these already have all of those complications in place and all it really needs is the button to activate it. I'm aware of the friction style/throttle lock cruise controls, had them on the GS and several other motorcycles. For some reason, I just never gelled with them.
That extra factory body work makes it look so much better and so much less fugly. It actually hides that big square gas tank and makes it look like at first glance a modern bike. Pfft you've never been poor before have you, I'd ride 18 year old tires until the tred wore off an then replace them. Just don't do sport bike stuff on it on a race track. Cruising you should be fine on any age tire. I've driven on them down to the metal thread before replacing them. Tires are expensive, you don't just throw them out because they are old. What if your wife did that to you?
Just imagine doing an emergency braking and avoid a collision with 18 years old tires. 🤦♂️🙏🏼 Out in the bin with them.
@@kasperkjrsgaard144795% of motorcycle accidents are caused by people going too fast or too slow than they should, and it doesn't stop people from doing either. Never had an accident from a tire just going flat.
I've had a couple of very close calls caused by aged out tires rapidly deflating. In one case, with the sidewall blowing out on a mountain road. That's why I tend to put new tires on both cars and bikes that have old to ancient tires on them, especially when I expect to use them semi-regularly.
I just bought a T100. Should have it in a couple of weeks. I am curious about you suspension. Are you happy with the Olins? What is the model? Did you change the front suspension as well??
I bought the bike with the upgraded suspension already in place and yes, the front forks also have upgraded inserts. I do like the suspension on this bike a lot, but I've never ridden a stock T120 so I can't really compare.
Get some bar end mirror’s 👍
I have a 1994 LT..love it!!!! And two k 75's
I am toying with getting another K1100LT if I can find a nice one (and make some space in the garage first). They're great bikes, as are K75s.
Has the gearbox/gear selector problem ever been sorted out on the bonneville models?
That's something on my list of things to check. I'm not sure if there is an upgraded part available, but my understanding is that it's at least not that hard an issue to address if it happens. Well, at least if you've got breakdown cover and can get the bike home...
sad to ear about the crash, but glad you're in good health
Thank you. Fortunately this time, it's minor damage to the bike only and entirely repairable. Deer are unfortunately a fact of life around here and the reason I usually avoid riding at dusk or dawn.

I have that seat on my Speed Twin and I have to agree it’s fantastic, have you tried the Dart fly screen, it takes enough of the wind pressure off your chest to stop fatigue but still allows enough airflow to keep you cool and looks good, The Triumph twins do make great touring bikes
Thanks! I've not tried a Dart fly screen, but it's one of the screens I'm considering.
yes - i also have a dart marlin on my T120 and it works fine for me. best regards from vienna.
With all due respect, there hard cases, especially the top box looks just awful on such a beautiful machine like Bonneville...
Good looking bike! Do you know what brand / model of windshield that is?
Thank you! I think it's a National Cycle F-15 screen, although so far I've not found anything that suggests they were actually available for the 2016 onwards ones. All I can find is info that they were available for the ones up to 2015. That said, it does say "F-15" on one of the mounts.
Triumph's are Rideable. I've put 135K km on my 2017 T 100. They look great too.
…somebody needs to go to gym 😂
Which windshield is that? I've never seen that shape/angle on a Bonneville before, and it looks promising!
I bought the bike with this windshield, and unfortunately don't have much information about it. Based on the markings on the mount, it might be a National Cycle F-15 windshield, but those only seem to have been available for Bonnevilles up to 2015.
@@garagemoneypit That looks to be the one. And how do you like it? Everything I've tried on my T120 has given me too much buffeting to be worth it
@@Automagine I'm in two minds about it (and I actually talk about that in the video on my T120 that I just released last night). It is great from a buffeting perspective as it is adjusted right now, but it doesn't give me enough space to put mirror extenders on, and it gets in the way of a lot of items that I would normally attach to the handlebars like an extra front-facing camera. I'm probably going to try a Madstad screen or similar and see if that works better for my purposes, but if it wasn't for some of these specific needs, I'd be more than happy with the screen. Would be ever better with some sort of quick release, though.
What color is that?
Sorry for the delayed reply - it's Classicschwarz Metallic (paint code 670), although the colours are a bit faded and it does look a little more like an anthracite colour in direct sunlight.
