In this powerful sermon, Pastor Willie Wanjie invites us to reflect on the profound truth of God's Incarnation - how God, in His infinite love and grace, became flesh and dwelt among us. We are reminded of how angels live and work amongst us, as Hebrews 13:2 tells us to entertain strangers, for in doing so, we may unknowingly entertain angels. This supernatural presence of God is with us at all times, guiding and blessing us, just as the angel's message to Mary in Luke 1:28 was one of blessing and favor: "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women."
The term "highly favored" speaks to being filled with grace, and this grace is the foundation of God's favor upon our lives. Just as Mary’s womb was blessed, bringing forth the Messiah, blessings can manifest in different ways. Not every blessing is a new house or job-sometimes it is a new vision, a deeper understanding of God's presence, or even the grace to bear His purposes in our lives. Are we able to perceive these blessings when they come? Can we see God's presence even in our trials?
In Judges 6:11-12, we see the story of Gideon-a man who was called by God in the midst of his struggle and weakness, yet was assured of God's presence: "The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!" God’s presence, just like it was with Mary, is available to us even when we feel undeserving or inadequate. Sometimes, our circumstances may make it hard for us to receive the blessings and favor God has for us. Psalms 126:1 reminds us of the joy that comes when God’s favor returns to His people, like those who dream of blessings they never thought possible.
The presence of God in our lives is the greatest gift we can receive. This presence offers us favor with God and with men, as we see in Luke 2:52, where Jesus grew in wisdom, stature, and favor. This same favor is available to us, answering some of life’s most pressing questions, and positioning us for divine approval and success.
Through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, the curse on humanity, which began with Eve, was reversed. 1 Timothy 2:15 speaks to how women, particularly, are now graced to bear children without the painful curse, symbolizing the new grace available to us through Christ. Even the names given to key figures in Scripture carried divine purpose-Jesus being the ultimate example, with His name revealing both His identity and His divine mission: "God with us" (Matthew 1:23, Isaiah 7:14). As we reflect on the power of names in the Bible, we recognize that God’s presence changes us, shifts our identity, and aligns us with His divine purpose.
Ultimately, the greatest gift we can ever receive is the presence of God in our lives. When the Spirit of God comes upon us, it brings a shift-a transformation that leads to a deeper understanding of who we are in Christ.
Conclusion: May we, like Mary, be open to receiving God’s favor, understanding that blessings may not always come in the forms we expect. And may we always recognize the profound truth that God is with us, not just as a distant deity, but as God incarnate, with us every step of the way.
