Inking my new Platinum 3776 Century UEF with Iroshizuku Asa-Gao. My initial impression? Amazing!
Just purchased the Platinum 3776 Century in Ultra Extra Fine. I'm starting an exploration of extra and ultra fine nibs and I really picked a good one to start! It fees great, really rewarding to write with.
This is my second 3776 pen, the other being a soft fine. My initial writing impression of this UEF is that it's smooth, the kind of feedback I love (I call it "scritchy-scritchy" for me that's a good thing), and really comfortable to write with. I'll be using it and a couple other EF pens in the collection to see which ones I prefer.

I purchased a E95S second-hand off eBay and was in rough shape. The nib was scratched up like crazy and it needed to be re-glued to the feed. I sent it to Pilot so see how much it would be to repair and they fixed it for no charge! They replace the nib, gave the pen a thorough cleaning, and returned it to me as if it was a brand new pen. They even threw in a box of cartridges! A really fantasti...

Inking up my new Sailor 1911 Large fountain pen
I like fine nibs but I was afraid to buy this in extra fine. That was all they had when I went to order. I had an extra fine in a Pilot Metro, and I liked it. I liked it so much I carried the pen with me, and lost the damned thing.
This is so cool
Sometimes I couldn't tell if I wrote with this pen or a normal ballpoint pen. That's how fine it is.
An excel spreadsheet
Interesting I just ordered this pen in red with the same nib last night!
743 is on my list so thanks for this too the point review.
Don’t have any of these inks. But I plan to change that, as you show the color is great, and that bottle, got to have one. Thanks!
If you had one of these back in the late 70s you had plenty of friends who wanted to come over and play.
Hah ha it's true! Kids I didn't even know came over to play, made a lot of friends that year.
do you like the 823 or the 743 more? thoughts?
You know, I think about this a lot. The 823 is just a bit heavier than the 743 so I find it more comfortable and easier to write with, particularly for longer sessions. My handwriting is poor so a heavier pen helps me keep my lines straighter. It's only a few grams but I can feel the difference when I switch between them. The 743, however, is *so* much easier to clean and swap inks. It's much more convenient when I want to try something new or run with one color for only a few pages. This particular 743 also has a SFM nib which I'm not taking to like I thought I would. I'm leaning toward Pilot's firm nibs (non-soft), the soft ones aren't helping my poor handwriting. It's an extra factor I just don't have the dexterity to appreciate or control.
I had the same amazing experience with my vintage Elite. Bought a “slightly” damaged pen on eBay. Slightly damaged meant a large chunk of the barrel was broken out but not shown in the photos. Sent to Piot seeking a new barrel that I expected to pay for. Took a long time, including a trip by the pen to Japan. Great results all free. Double thanks Pilot.
None of us need more notebooks! I love the Leuchturm 1917 with the 120gram paper to write on with fountain pens!
I appreciate your support, particularly when at this moment I'm placing an order on JetPens for more notebooks. 😃
Those packing labels are likely heat transfer labels. heat or quickly rubbing with a hard object will pull ink out of the label and black it out better. I can still read under the marker.
That's a good catch, thanks! I was so excited to open the darn thing I wasn't thinking.
That is so nice to hear that they stand behind their pens because I bought the same ones you have on the two different main stores we lurk, one you mentioned, and I was not sure if Pilot would touch them. Thanks for this.
I do buy a lot of pens direct from Japan but I really don't know if they'd service one in the US. I may have just gotten lucky with the 95S being the domestic version. If you have an experience either way I'd love to hear about it.
@@skittish1 Right now my pens are great, I hope I never have to but this gave me a nice window, just in case.
Love mine very smooth writer
You really can't go wrong with Pilot.
I'm so glad I watched your video, WOW!
What about next video is a review of the politician pens ? Like us president or belgian king ... that would be nice ^^
Nice vidéo. Remind me of the guy who do lighters ^^ you should have write on a quality paper though. With a zoom on the point and a slow motion ^^ would have been great ^^ keep on the cool work.
Hey thanks for watching and the great input! I for sure need to push my skills a lot more, your ideas are now my goals! Thanks again!
@skittish1 you are welcome ^^ I subscribed so glad to help and looking forward for the next videos ^^
By the way, the name of the lighter guy channel is @histoireduneflamme1988. You should take a look to get some inspiration ^^ honestly, I am really looking forward if you do so. It is a really original idea with different type or ink, different pens, different papers and different writing styles ^^ i with you the best and big success.
Good video thanks
Thank you! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment too!
Sexy pen
Id like to see that yellow on paper .. I have a Navular that needs a great pop of yellow ink.
It's a great ink and I normally don't go for yellows and oranges. Pen Friend For You did a sizzle reel on it and an Acriv pen that shows it off nicely: ua-cam.com/video/ORZKZZaNGSY/v-deo.html Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I buy cheap already filled pens so I don’t panic when I lose them. And I always lose them.
I'd like to see a map of the world that shows the location of all the pens I've lost. I swear they teleport out of my bag sometimes.
I have sf nibs in 74, 742, and 743. The smallest one is the softest and the largest the stiffest.
How interesting, do you have to change how you write when switching between them? I'm really struggling with lightening up my hand when using this soft nib. I didn't realize how hard I write until now.
Funny that you say that-I’ve learned that relative to others, I write with a very light hand, which means that I end up getting more line variation out of 74 SF than I do with either the 742 SF or the 743 SF (since the larger ones are less flexible). I love the tactility of writing with a fountain pen, so when I write with a nail (and I find that Platinums are WAY stiffer than any of the Pilots), I do like to bear down more to feel the nib across the page.
I believe after some writing there is a change after a few pages. Other said no but my FA is very different from day 1 to 30 pages. Im finding this might be true on my CH912 FA nib. I dont own any softs and maybe I learned to be lighter with the FA nib which you really need to be light handed with. If you like small and a nail the PO nib I love its like a Platinum UEF and designed for writing on poor quality paper.
Glad you like the fuyu-syogun. I find it works very well in my Pilot Falcon, which has a nib that’s SF and provides some line variation (but isn’t a full flex). If you ever do buy one, I’d recommend the metal version (I think it’s called Elabo in Japan). It has the Con 70, whereas the resin version can only fit the Con 40 (which holds far less ink). And just to say, congratulations - that Custom 743 is one beautiful pen!
Thank you again for the ink recommendation and now for the pen recommendation! I've seen a Falcon and really like the striking line of that "hooked" nib, it's on my "someday" list for sure. Meanwhile I practice with my softer nibs so I'm a bit less of a caveman with them.
@@skittish1 Happy to help, but as I've only got one other fountain pen, a Custom 74, there's not much more I can suggest! It has a lovely smooth nib (size 5, F), but no variation. It does require a light touch, but over time has improved my handwriting because of that. I only use Iroshizuku take-sumi (charcoal bamboo) in it. That's a lovely grey/black ink - a bit like a pencil mark. I like it very much. And thanks for the videos, they're interesting and helpful at the same time.
I am not impressed with the one (probably my only) vac filler I purchased from some fishy foreign company. I find it difficult to fill these pens when the ink level is low in the bottle. With a converter I could simply take a blunt needle syringe and fill the converter. Besides, cleaning can be a struggle too.
Thank you for the comment! Converters or reusing cartridges is my fave too. While I really like the look and the physics involved with these vac fillers I'm starting to realize the drawbacks. I haven't had to really deep-clean one yet but you got me thinking it's going to be a huge pain if I ever want to switch inks or if there's staining in this demonstrator. I picked up TWSBI's proprietary bottle for filling this one that's designed for low-ink situations but doesn't help for non TWSBI pens. I still got a lot to learn but I have the feeling one is never done learning about pens :-D
I purchased a Sailor King of Pen from Pen-Pen Avenue on eBay and the experience was excellent.
Wow congratulations on your King of Pens! Thanks for your comment too, I've been really happy with penpen-avenue. Am saving up for my next purchase from then right now.
Congratulations on your Custom 823❤️ It really is a piece of art. Writes like a charm. I use my Custom 823 with Kon Peki or Robert Oster Soda Pop Blue or Colorverse Supernova and all three inks go really well with it.
Thank you! I'm really excited to have it, some days I just stare at my pens I feel so fortunate. The Soda Pop Blue looks fantastic, I'm putting that on my Christmas list for sure. I've tried Colorverse inks in F and EF pens and found them to be a bit dry. What pens are you using it in? I love Colorverse colors though, will definitely give them another chance on your recommendation. Thanks again!
@@skittish1 I use my Colorverse Supernova in my Custom 823 (Fine) and Lamy 2000 (M). Works really well and i never had any issues related to drying.
OK that's great to know, I'll give Colorverse another try. Thank you!
Has the new one started flowing better? I hope it works better for you!
Hi and thanks for asking! All I had to do was open up the valve a bit more and now it's working great. Since that video I used up one fill and am on my second, it's writing really well. I'm also learning a lot too and I can clearly use more learnin'. 😅
I have an 823. The nib is amazing. Flow is also ink dependent like all pens. However it a pen that makes all inks good inks.
Enjoyed your video. I do enjoy writing with the President in XF.
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I've really been enjoying the nib on this President, it's nestled into the goldilocks zone for me for sure.
Thanks for this very useful video highlighting the two nib sizes. The 823 is a grail pen for me, so I can't imagine the wonder of having two! I also find Iroshizuku inks work very well in Pilot pens, my favourite being fuyu-syogun (old man winter). It's a beautiful grey. You might want to give it a try.
Thank you for watching and your recommendation of Iroshizuku Fuyu-syogun! The grey looks so lovely I'll try it out, and in a Pilot pen for sure. Purchasing the pens direct from Japan has dramatically extended my buying power. Without those price-breaks I would not have been able to expand the collection anywhere near it is now. There's risk but I've been really fortunate.
😢
Another fun and interesting video, thanks!!
Thank you and thanks for coming back!
Love your description of your channel. 😊 Nice pen and ink. For smoothing nibs either a piece of micromesh or a dual-sided nail buffer, used judiciously, does a great job. The nail buffer can help in cases of Baby's Bottom as well.
That title is very accurate too :-D Thanks for the mesh and nail buffer recommendation. I'm a bit nervous to work on the Iris nib much more because they're hard to come by. I have a TWSBI swipe that's a little underwhelming so I'll start there and see what I learn. Thanks again!
i would like to get one but fear who to trust, can you recommend a vendor
I get that for sure! There are a ton of reputable sellers out there, I've had great experiences with these: www.gouletpens.com www.jetpens.com www.pensachi.com goldspot.com On eBay I've found this seller to be excellent: www.ebay.com/str/penpenavenue This is not a guarantee though, as always "caveat emptor!"
you talk really low, would lke if you can raise the gain on the mic. great video otherwise. I'm looking into getting a Amoled GBC, how do you like yours?
Thanks for the input! I clearly have a lot to learn, I'll get on that audio for sure. If I didn't have Analogue Pocket I would for sure get another GBC and put an AMOLED screen in it, especially one with touch screen control and on-screen display. The screen I have is older (laminated IPS I think, it's been a while) the touch sensor mounted inside the top of the case is finicky at best, kind of a pain really. The screen eats battery fast so I would add a battery pack with external charging too. I absolutely love the screen though, it's closer to the other screens I see in a day so it's not so jarring to go back and forth.
@@skittish1 cool thanks for the info
In a lower price category, I have a PenBBS 308 that I got with a Waverly nib that is also quite good.
Oh I'd like to try that, can you tell me where you found it? Was it a Pilot Waverly nib or a PenBBS version? Thanks!
@@skittish1 PenBBS makes their own nibs. A quick check on Etsy, where I got mine, shows no PenBBS Waverly nibs available, I'm sorry to say. Furthermore, I stumbled onto a comment that claimed the PenBBS nib in question is more of a micro-fude, rather thab a Waverly proper, and not to be compared with Pilot's. I apologize for getting you excited over nothing.
Hi and thanks for the update. For the price point I see 308s going for on eBay I could easily try it and see what it's like. If anything I learn a bit more about other options out there. A win either way I think. Thanks again!
@@skittish1 Not all 308's have a bent nib, check before buying.
Will do, thanks again for steering me in the right direction.
Sadly Sailor charges so much for the limited editions which are mostly slims and 14k nibs. I have 2 fine one bitone PG strandard and one rhodium 1911 Large. The Bitone nib I have has amazing feedback. The 1911L is close but much less pencil feel and noise. Stupid they dont come with a converter so I suggest just getting some sailor cartridges and treat them as samples for your Sailors. I do warn people the Sailor are shorter than you might think the 1911 Large is almost the size of a Pilot CH912, The C823 is bigger than the 1911L.
I have a lot to learn about the Sailor nibs but they're really winning me over. I was pretty focused on the more rigid and "formal" pilot nibs so the feel of these sailors is really opening up my mind to what's possible with a great nib. I just tried a Slim and it's a wee bit too small, have a Standard coming in soon I think is going the be the size for me for sure. Thanks for the input!
Actually used one of these recently, saw a the only picture of my uncle that’s left in our family, soon after the picture was taken he went into the Marines and was killed in Vietnam
That's really great you were able to find a pic of your uncle! Did you have a chance to know him before he was killed? It's so surreal looking through these old pics, faces and places I haven't seen in decades, stuff I completely forgot about.
Great vid man!
Thank you! I need a lot more practice for sure, really appreciate you taking the time to leave a note!
Are those family photos or just an archive of old photos?
All my family photos! The one on the screen is my dad’s parent’s house in Zanesville, Ohio taken 1966
Interesting video and a beautiful pen, thank you very much!
Glad you like it! Thank you!
You should speed up your presentation a bit. It gets boring.
Thanks for the input, you are absolutely right. I have a lot of work to do and this kind of blunt, honest input is just what's needed. I appreciate you taking the time to give it too!
How come the ink does not appear red on paper? I recently became interested in fountain pens and calligraphy. I bought the calligrapher's bible off of ebay that came with some nibs. I have one of those handmade pens woodworkers make somewhere but what is a good starter pen for practicing cursive writing?
The ink color doesn't show very well because of the camera I was using to record. Not the best but it's what I had. I've since switched to using my phone which is better but not by a lot. Hoping to upgrade some lights too but it'll be a while, I keep spending my budget on pens. :-D I don't do any calligraphy but I'm familiar with the type of sets you're talking about. The sets look great but the nibs tend to be flat or angled so managing the pen angle and strokes for calligraphy-style writing is a bit too much for my skill-level. Maybe someday but for now I stick with more "round" nibs like a Fine, Extra Fine, and Medium nibs. The fountain pen I started with to practice cursive was a disposable Zebra fountain pen. About $2 and a good Medium-Broad nib with lots of ink in it. After using up a couple of those I wanted to try some different nibs and inks so next was a non-disposable Platinum Preppy for about $6. A great place to start without spending a lot of money. Let us know how it goes as you try more things out!
You should get an MF nib, it sits in between the fine and the medium. Great writing experience. My favorite size of Sailor nib.
That's a good idea, I will definitely have to try an MF. If it keeps that softness of that M you may have just converted me from my Pilot bias. I just pulled the trigger on my September order so will budget it in for October for sure. Thanks!
My Endless Alchemy Candy Sea also being quite sticky, so while it didn't make my Lamy Al Star hard starts after capping, it did dried rather quickly after leaving it out in the air for a minute or two. But yes, the sheen is nice but I haven't use it on other pen since, well not yet
"Sticky" is a great way to describe how it behaves! It is such a bummer the ink seems to need just the right environment to work well. I really love the color so I keep giving it more chances, someday we'll find that sweet-spot! It's much better in my 823 since I've adjusted the vac plunger but the color is much lighter now. I think I love it best when it's on the verge of drying out, the blue and sheen are so pronounced under those conditions.
@@skittish1 yup, well it's Endless' first try on making inks and I haven't tried the 3 other colors yet, so I do have hopes that they behave differently
That's interesting Endless is new to the ink game, I had no idea. In this case I was the problem, I didn't have the valve open enough for the ink to flow well. I'm now on my second fill for that 823 and it's so much better, albeit a touch lighter. I've let it sit for a couple days between uses and no issues. I'm feeling really good about it.
Hi, As someone who is left handed (underwriter also) its a miracle to find fountain pen channels that use the same pen (spec pilot custom 823) and with the same hand and their experience writing with it. It took me a while to learn it as i quad grip the pen but having seen you hold it near the threads with three fingers ive been trying that, its helped loads. Is the pilot custom 823 a pen you use most days?
Also i want to try and Nib swap with a pilot custom 743 Fine/Medium, i understand it voids the warranty and its not recomended but is it something you've tried or would try at all? (im from the uk and Pilot pens are like gold dust, ordered from japan and really happy with the pen atm, the Video is ace, thank you :)
Hey that's amazing, I'm glad we found each other then! I never even thought about how I write until I started moving from ballpoint and gel pens to fountain. They're wonderful but demand so much discipline, not something I have a good store of. I was a side-writer in college but transitioned to under-writer at some point and don't even remember when. My daily before I purchased the 823-F was a 912 in Waverly. I'm working in the 823 to mix it up (and justify the cost of the pen :-) but I still reach for the 912 more than any other.
@@torindelmonte8952 I'm sorry I don't have a lot of experience with nib swaps on pens at this level. The only work I've done on a Pilot is replacing the feed on a 742. The process was really simple though, only took about a minute. I bought the 742 second-hand so I wasn't worried about voiding the warranty but it was still terrifying.
This is probably my favorite Pilot nib. Thanks.
I love it so much, it's really forgiving of my terrible writing postures. Are you left-handed by chance?
@@skittish1 Yes, Underwriter. Directly under writing.
Love the Sailor pens ❤
They really are a unique experience! I was blown away by the feel of that 21k nib.
Lovely pen❤. Any chance you could give us a writing sample of that F nib?
It's so comfortable to write with!. I have a video where I ink it up and compare the F and the M. "Inking up my new Sailor 1911 Large." Thanks for watching!
