Deck Staining - Should You “Just Add Another Coat?”

In this video the “Wizard of Wood” explains why “just adding another coat” may be a very bad idea. Exterior deck and wood sealers and stains are VERY different than paint and painting a surface. Adding another coat can create serious problems as stain and sealers once applied and dried will repel themselves and create a barrier. #decks #restoration #wizardofwood #wood #howto #deckstaining #deck...

    Stain the board and THEN cut it to see penetration. Water won’t do much. Oil is way better.

      Lumping all oil in one category is the first mistake, just as mentioned in the video. If you really think there are water based sealers and stains that don’t penetrate further than linseed oil, well… Too much old school thinking in this industry.

      @@billsullivan8812, there will be some natural fuzzing and wood fibers when restoring wood. Keeping a deck well maintained prevents this. No rhyme or reason on why some “new” wood does this and some new wood more than others. On aged wood if it has grayed or not been maintained they are decomposed wood fibers that actually need to come off before staining. Sometimes wood restoration is light sanding and Osborn brushing.

    Just bought a house with a deck around a pool that has not been touched in probably 7 years water is soaking in but the wood still has red stain on it. Standard 5/4 decking. I want to go with a lighter stain. Splash test does not bead up. Planning on replacing a few boards, stripping, scrubbing and sanding until all of the red is gone and then finishing with a light Grey or sand color. Any suggestions?

    • @wizardofwood
      @wizardofwood 16 днів тому

      @@tonymeans7193, I am assuming it is a solid stain. At 7 years it need a new coating, especially on a horizontal surface. If you are going to make the effort to strip and sand you will prep the surface very well for the new stain. Depending on how much is left over after stripping you will probably sand twice. Once with a very low grit that will remove the remaining stain and then 100 grit to finish it off and be ready to apply the new stain.

      Not sure about your question. Many reasons to sand a deck as illustrated in the video. These types of sanders are called floor sanders, I did not name them. where can i get info on doing a maintenance cleaning on log home Sikkens Proluxe coating ? medium algae growth

    • @wizardofwood
      @wizardofwood 17 днів тому

      The real answer is to follow the recommendation by Proluxe on recoating and maintenance. The biggest issue here is that most people do not follow the program (manufacturer’s recommendations) and then this starts the issues. Sikkens/Proluxe is one of the most difficult coatings for homeowners and even contractors to remove if maintenance is not followed. A light cleaning to remove organic growth and recoating with the same product is usually how maintenance is done. If the coating is too far gone or oxidized significantly, then you would need to strip, sand as necessary, perhaps Osborn Brush, and then recoat. Great product when applied and maintained correctly. Holds up well!
