Deck Staining - Should You “Just Add Another Coat?”
Переглядів 20716 годин тому
In this video the “Wizard of Wood” explains why “just adding another coat” may be a very bad idea. Exterior deck and wood sealers and stains are VERY different than paint and painting a surface. Adding another coat can create serious problems as stain and sealers once applied and dried will repel themselves and create a barrier. #decks #restoration #wizardofwood #wood #howto #deckstaining #deck...

Do i need to call the authorities on this black magic casting wizard? I’m watching you!
Wiz, I think your magic is with the wooden decks you restore! Very funny tho!
@@cappystrano1, No doubt! A customer who does magic actually asked me this. Gave me the idea for the video. Believe me, I will stick to exterior wood.
Nice thanks man
I wish this video had been posted before I stained my deck, with a product that said 24 hrs minimum in between coats, I hope it does not peel over winter with the snow
This made me laugh way harder than it should've! It's so wholesome ❤
Thanks Everett. I have been absorbing all of your videos best I can. blessing to your and your family
@@byronfabo3786, thank you and I hope the videos have been helpful.
You're drowning out great information with the background music. Thanks for the information.
Stain the board and THEN cut it to see penetration. Water won’t do much. Oil is way better.
Lumping all oil in one category is the first mistake, just as mentioned in the video. If you really think there are water based sealers and stains that don’t penetrate further than linseed oil, well… Too much old school thinking in this industry.
Very informative video! Thanks for sharing that info!
@@glennbigourdin9384, thank you! One of the most popular ones and seems to have been very helpful to many.
Hell yea
What alkali did u apply?
@@organicvids, usually Sodium Metasilicate, Sodium Hydroxide, and/or Potassium Hydroxide.
Hi wizardofwood
Omg
I would let this wizard give me wood
@wizardofwood Everett following your directions exactly and stll having wood fibre after rinsing with garden hose. Do you think I may need more pressure or simply let dry for few days and recheck.Thank You.
@@billsullivan8812, there will be some natural fuzzing and wood fibers when restoring wood. Keeping a deck well maintained prevents this. No rhyme or reason on why some “new” wood does this and some new wood more than others. On aged wood if it has grayed or not been maintained they are decomposed wood fibers that actually need to come off before staining. Sometimes wood restoration is light sanding and Osborn brushing.
@wizardofwood Thank You very much for quick response Everett.
Wiz…you are a credit to the home service industry. Keep rolling and thanks for all your videos. I always learn something new about decks and wood and caring for them.👍

How do u need to wait to stain pressure treated wood
@@russhauck1061, thanks for the question. It depends on what kind of pressure treated pine you got. Kiln dried, prime can be sealed or stained sooner than newer cut, green, wet wood. Good kiln dried, prime pressure treated pine is a little more money but well worth it. It is also less likely to shrink as much too. Check out this older video that is still relevant. ua-cam.com/video/DVUPc3eN484/v-deo.htmlsi=945lR63tkd0Jvzio
Thanks that help so much I have knots in my deck wood. They did not tell me when they built my deck. So I will at least three months to stain my deck. I love the videos.
Excellent and informative. TY
Thank you for sharing your pro experience !... the carpenter is already building my decks (front & side decks) and he already stain them . Just in time I watched you excellent video because I was asking him to look for a clear coating to make them look shiny !! .. if I understood well coating will be a disaster !..right? is there any way to make them glossy once stained ? Thank you!
Wizard, what do we do about this?
We are adding new joists, venting the stairs for better air flow in this area. Then we will repair and seal the mahogany with Messmer’s Hardwood Formula!
If wood rots unexpected on an old deck then life must be tough.
@@ryantracey8574, actually not that old and it is mahogany. My opinion, it is a construction issue. That area was built next to a pool and moisture just sits under there with no vents and the inside is enclosed. We are repairing and adding vents onto those stair risers. That should help the air flow and keep that part dry moving forward.
the deck looks so nice
No it doesn’t LIAR
@@user-rr4bw8ek4p besides the rotted part it looks nice, why would you call me a liar?
The wood really is nice. Just this area not so good. I will do another video once it is all repaired and stained.
I really like Everett's videos but the terminology of the various products discussed in this video got confusing. It would be helpful if Everett could prepare a simple chart to describe the various products: A) house wash mix; B) deck and wood restorer (sodium metasilicate); C) deck and wood stripper; D) brightener (oxalic acid), and E) stain. Thank you
Thank you, I have a huge deck and dread staining it😂
@@darnisejennings9138, I got a large deck too. I don’t mind it too much since we spend A LOT of time on it so we get the use for sure. Depending on who is helping you, do the verticals on a separate day as the floor if possible.
Your honesty is refreshing. IPE is awesome, but work.

@@Ohtwiggy, thank you and there is still time!
I’m trying to find a company in Washington that does this.
@@renaetawney5217, I tell people to contact a specialty paint store near you for a reference. These people know who is busy and who gets recommended most. Be specific about what you are looking for, like exterior wood restoration and exterior staining. Not all painters do this work or well versed in the differences. They will be able to give you painters who are best this service or a company that specifically does this work well.
@@wizardofwood Thank you very much.
Brilliant advice.. Thank You.
@@stilb1te, thank you for watching!
Just bought a house with a deck around a pool that has not been touched in probably 7 years water is soaking in but the wood still has red stain on it. Standard 5/4 decking. I want to go with a lighter stain. Splash test does not bead up. Planning on replacing a few boards, stripping, scrubbing and sanding until all of the red is gone and then finishing with a light Grey or sand color. Any suggestions?
@@tonymeans7193, I am assuming it is a solid stain. At 7 years it need a new coating, especially on a horizontal surface. If you are going to make the effort to strip and sand you will prep the surface very well for the new stain. Depending on how much is left over after stripping you will probably sand twice. Once with a very low grit that will remove the remaining stain and then 100 grit to finish it off and be ready to apply the new stain.
@@wizardofwood ThanxWiz!
Did you use fine, medium or coarse glass? I have a log cabin to blast this fall, my first cabin. Any special nozzle? Air pressure? Distance from cabin? I know this all varies depending on how thick the coating is. The cabin I will be blasting is stained. Thank you in advance.
What's the best option and why to sand a deck... Floor sander or deck sander?
Not sure about your question. Many reasons to sand a deck as illustrated in the video. These types of sanders are called floor sanders, I did not name them. I believe you are just calling it, generally, a deck sander. In the U.S. I am not aware of anything called a deck sander. To me though, they would be synonamous.
Been powerwashing and staining decks for 23 years. I’ve tried every clear coat and they all suck in my opinion. I tell the customer to expect graying in 6 months and they hard to get off.
@@brianemmons2485, at least you set the expectation!
Love the look of composite decking, don't love the price...HATE how HOT it gets during summer months. It's cedar for me.
@@maydanlex, actually there are product lines that are less than cedar and comparable to pressure treated pine. Darker colors do get hot.
Thanks for the insight into this, I'm a new board member and I'm trying to see what a realistic bid would be for our community.
@@patrickeaton752, usually depends on current condition and the last coating can make a difference. If you are in an HOA or community with multiple decks you may get a break for volume.
where can i get info on doing a maintenance cleaning on log home Sikkens Proluxe coating ? medium algae growth
The real answer is to follow the recommendation by Proluxe on recoating and maintenance. The biggest issue here is that most people do not follow the program (manufacturer’s recommendations) and then this starts the issues. Sikkens/Proluxe is one of the most difficult coatings for homeowners and even contractors to remove if maintenance is not followed. A light cleaning to remove organic growth and recoating with the same product is usually how maintenance is done. If the coating is too far gone or oxidized significantly, then you would need to strip, sand as necessary, perhaps Osborn Brush, and then recoat. Great product when applied and maintained correctly. Holds up well!
seriously Everett we started using PPE back in the early 1980's ... why are you posting videos representing your company, showing men NOT wearing safety glasses ? WTF ? why the foolishness ?
You are not wrong on that point.
Hank Schrader!
Great advice as allways Everett👏👏👏👏
@@steveshires2549, thank you sir!
That’s going to be a great deck, good seasonal outdoor living space too!👍
Wizard of wood? 😂 you can't stain new wet wood🤦🏼♂️ here's a tip from a real wood worker! If you sprinkle water on the board and it beads guess what? The stain will not take! New boards have to dry out for at least 3 months. 3 months later sprinkle water on the board and if it absorbs into the wood then and only then will the stain take. Stop listening to youtubers!
@@scottfudger1231, not always true and a fallacy in most cases. . Plus, I hope with your limited knowledge you are referring to pine. Stain as soon as possible, Forest Product Laboratory, Western Red Cedar Lumber Association and more I can cite. This is why people tune in here and not to listen to people who learn from FB groups.
Nice work Wiz!👍
