Prairie Problems on the Nene Valley Railway - 11.07.2021
*Update* Found out some boiler cladding had come loose.
What started as a normal visit to the Nene Valley turned into something unusual, and not in a good way.
So, on loan GWR Prairie tank 4144 set off on her first trip of the day, firstly heading to Yarwell, then towards Peterborough Nene Valley. After changing locations to Orton Mere, 4144 had yet to appear from the Peterborough direction, myself eventually being told that she had failed by a helpful station member.
After some 30 minutes after 4144 was due she appeared, light engine, coming to a haul in the platform. The crew informed those who were there that on her return from Peterborough a loud bang was heard, so the crew stopped, and not wanting to damage the loco more, decided to leave the coaches and run light to Orton to have a thorough inspection.
After some runs up and down the platform to try and see/hear the problem, the crew couldn't find a fault, by which time, the rescue loco in the form of a class 14 turned up to collect the coaches. Having returned with the coaches, the 14 headed past the station, then which the prairie was added to the rear to be taken back to Wansford.
Quite an interesting turn of events.
Hope you enjoy!

An impromptu visit down to the always wonderful Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. I was only there for a short while so only captured two locos, those being No. 6 'Samson' and No. 2 'Northern Chief'. Still nice to see some steam after a while away.

A drizzly Saturday morning visit to the Didcot Railway Centre. In operation that day was Large Prairie '4144', a loco I first saw back in February 2020 (before the world went mad) so it was good to see it again after all that time. Also out and about was Class 14 D9516 on the branch line. So good to return to Didcot! Hope you enjoy.

To conclude my weekend of adventures, I headed to the non railway location of Carlton Colville to visit the East Anglia Transport Museum, a place I've not been to in over 10 years. My first steamy encounter for 2021, I've certainly missed it! On a sunny April Friday (also my birthday) I headed up to the Bressingham Steam Museum, who like many other heritage sites had recently reopened to the public. On my visit the 2ft "Fen Railway" was in action, with No.2 'Bevan' in steam, as should of been the Garden Railway, unfortunately their sole loco 'Alan Bloom' had failed just a...

I was on this train !

nice video i volunteer there aswell!
I went there before
Anyone else getting Toby vibes
Shame it turned out like that for you - 4144 was looking grand. BUT you got a Teddy Bear!! One of my favourites
Great video :)
Shame about that, but you still got some good shots.
Cheers, made the day more interesting.
Nice video. Strange goings on did you find out if there had actually been an issue or is it still a mystery
Cheers mate, no unfortunately I didn't really, the crew said they couldn't seem to find a problem.
@@D9019 one of those ones when your sure something is wrong but no idea what
Seems it. Was interesting to see a bit of drama.
@@D9019 - apparently some boiler cladding fell off the loco. This weekend the Polish PKP 0-8-0T Class Slask No. Tkp 5485 will be in steam and hauling passenger trains. The British Railways 2-6-2T 41xx Class No. 4144 should be in steam and hauling passenger trains on Wednesday 28 July. Best wishes and take care. Kind regards, Peter Skuce. St Albans. Hertfordshire.
Excellent video of your day out on the Nene Valley Railway mate 👍👍 It is a shame that 4144 had problems, hope the locomotive will be running again soon.
Cheers mate. Yes it was, but it made the day more interesting I feel.
Very nice, must go there some day :)
You do enjoy a trip to wind swept dungeness mate. The shot of Northern Chief departing dungeness with the lighthouse in the background was nice, which crossing was the last shot from?
I certainly do 👍 only decided to go down that morning. That crossing is the first crossing south of dymchurch station.
@@D9019 very much spur of the moment then. Have you seen the rail tour going from Southend on the 10th
@@kineticrail Indeed. Yes myself and a mate might be going to see it at pitsea
@@D9019 I'm still looking to see what loco it will be and the timings and make a decision where to go and see it.
Excellent video of the Spa Valley Railway reopening with Sir Keith Park in action mate 👍👍 I hope you go again to the railway to see Sir Keith Park running as Brentor during the last weekend next month?
Cheers mate 👍 Actually I'm thinking of going to Bressingham that weekend for their Traction Engine Rally.
@@D9019 Ah excellent, is there any thing you going during the Bank Holiday weekend?
Yes on Saturday I plan on going to the east Anglian Railway Museum for their Transport Rally
@@D9019 Ah good. There one IA would like to go is the Chasewater Railway as I have not been there for a long time.
That would be a good one to visit.
Great video as always. I do like a cl31, a very underrated loco. In BR days could be find on all types of trains. But not so many now in preservation.
Cheers. That's very true, you don't see them around that often.
Excellent as ever mate. Looks like you managed to avoid the showers. The first shot looked good and shows the good work been done by the guys there doing the lineside vegetation clearing. I liked the shot of SKP coasting through Groombridge.
Cheers mate! Yer when the train passed it wasn't raining but I unfortunately got caught in some waiting for it 😬 Yer quite happy with that shot. Hopefully going to Chappel on Saturday for their Transport Rally.
@@D9019 always the way waiting around in the wet and cold. Oh right sounds interesting im looking to head to chatham dockyard to film the railway there on bank holiday Monday (if the weathers alright)
Oh cool, will be interesting to see a video from that
@@D9019 yer I have been trying to do video there for a few times both times I got thwarted by strong winds off the river fingers crossed third time lucky
Indeed!
Super good video :)
Good done video :)
Brilliant video :)
Thanks
Excellent video of your visit to Didcot Railway Centre mate 👍👍
Cheers mate!
Great footage, nice to see the locomotives in the shed, 6106 looking particularly shiny! Well done for sticking it out given the abysmal weather!
Thanks, yes the rain does seem to make the locos sparkle a bit more.
Nice work mate. Looked like you had miserable weather your braver than me i decided against a trip out this weekend as the forecast isn't looking great. Bit odd seeing 5051 in the workshop I wonder what its doing in there.
Cheers, well I'd already bought the admission ticket so thought I'd better go along, but only stayed for an hour. Yer when I first looked I thought it was pendennis until I saw the number.
@@D9019 oh right fair enough. Just thinking they maybe using parts off 5051 to use on Pendennis. Have you got much else planned this month
Might be! Well I'm out up at nene valley on Saturday and hopefully spa valley on Sunday.
@@D9019 certainly keeping yourself busy. I may keep my eye on the weather and may head up to bure valley in the week at some point. Try to come up with somewhere in June as well now as my original plan has changed as they have altered there event dates
Somewhat yes. Oh nice, I think I'll wait till the BVR have some sort of gala and I'll go then.
Great stuff, I liked the shot of the cl66 followed by the Prairie. You certainly get about, I thought you might have been at the SVR diesel gala this weekend.
Cheers mate. Tbh I usually stick to visiting rlys in the east/south east, or within easy reach of London.
Super good video :)
Thanks!
Great stuff mate. Some nice new locations for you especially the shots at the crossing just out of hythe where did you park for them I know there small close on the otherwise.
Cheers mate, was good to try some new locations. For the crossing I parked on the main road opposite a Sainsburys, only a 5 minute walk to the crossing. The close at the crossing is private. Unsure where to go Saturday, thinking of Didcot.
@@D9019 oh right yer I know where you mean just round from the station. I'm having the same pains at the moment trying to think of somewhere to go this month what locos are in steam at didcot this weekend
@@kineticrail It's only the prairie on Saturday. Had thought of going back to Romney but having been twice recently Im unsure. The following weekend I plan on going Nene Valley Saturday and Spa Valley Sunday.
@@D9019 oh right seen that plenty of times. Yer sometimes going to the same place to often can become a bit boring i find. What happening at the nene valley anything interesting? I may look at bure valley at somepoint this month
I might go just to get out. It's more because I've made videos on it recently rather than it's boring, actually quite fun chasing the trains. On the Reopening weekend they are running the polish tank and Thomas. If you do decide to visit bure valley let me know and I'll see if I can join.
Awesome footage. Samsons whistle has such a powerful tone to it, it just screams "I'm coming though and you'd better get of a the way"
I agree, Id say the same for the other locos with chimes.
Nice video! Weird to hear Green Goddess with that whistle I must say, not the normal one, sounds like black prince's
Thanks. Yes it is, I'm so used to hearing her chime whistle, hopefully it will return soon. Probably is princes, but sounds identical to chiefs!
Great video, I must admit it is a superb little railway. Although I do like the BVR, but then I have to say that as I'm a volunteer there.
Cheers 👍 I do like the BVR (although I've only been once) will certainly try and get there again.
Excellent video of your another visit to the RH&DR mate 👍
Cheers mate
@@D9019 Where are you going next weekend?
Don't know tbh.
Nice one
Cheers!
Good video, some great shots, well done. They certainly had a great variety of locos.
Cheers! Yes plenty of locos to see.
Super great video :)
Thank you very much!
Do you need a ticket to go on the station
You do yes!
All the trains look empty. I'm going on Monday
They were pretty empty, so no problem finding a seat.
Excellent video of the Spring Gala at the Mid Hants mate 👍👍
Cheers mate, was a good gala.
Yes it was a fantastic gala and it was enjoyable. I’m heading to Didcot today.
Oh nice 👍 are you going anywhere next weekend?
Well I through maybe go for the Great Central or the North Norfolk. But I’m not sure yet where I’m going to. I let you know at some point.
Oh nice 👍
Excellent video mate some really great shots in there, I liked the one of the prairie and Cheltenham at ropely and the one of the S15 on the approach. Really good to finally meet up as well
Cheers mate, I'm happy with the number of decent clips I got! Yes definitely, we'll do it again at some point! Had to re-upload the video unfortunately as it had a sound fault right at the end 🙄
@@D9019 yer you certainly got a fair bit especially as you was mainly at ropely and alresford. Oh right I think we have all been there with issue during uploading. Most defiantly mate sort a few other meet ups
Yes I'm glad I tried those shots in the field. I might go somewhere next weekend but unsure yet.
Always wanted to go but never have! Looks good, great video 👍
Cheers, yes I'd certainly recommend it.
Brilliant stuff! Really nice shots must have been a lot of travelling around 👍
It was a little bit, but I hadn't tried some of those locations before so was worth it.
Nice :)
Cheers!
Very good video :)
Thanks 👍
Nice video I may give this one a look at some point. 1:25 and 4:45 funny how things come back around give it a few years and most buses will whisper by like that.
I'd recommend it. Yes I know, I've heard the nickname silent killers cause how quiet these things are. Caught me out a few times.
I`ve just had another look and it looks like the railway it`s been extended into the tree area.
Yes I was told they now own the field at the back and the railway extends over the road and into the field to a part built platform.
@@D9019 Brilliant, thanks.
Good video. A place I often visit. They were going to extend the narrow gauge railway into the field, don`t suppose you noticed if that had been done.
Hi nice weather at Dungarees i was on it last Wednesday 21/04/2021 weather was bad to say cold did the full length round trip but still a great day nice shots thanks
Excellent video of the RH&DR mate 👍 I’m heading to the railway tomorrow and the locos that you saw are running during tomorrow.
Cheers mate really enjoyed it. Oh excellent, should be a good day!
I want to ask you a question, what length & widest of your model railway?
It's about 3ft by 3 1/2 ft.
Another nice one mate. Nice to see southern maid out. Your shot at Bolophs bridge crossing was good, I ended up getting one of the diesels when I was there the other week. Was the shot at 4:34 burmarsh road
Cheers mate, really enjoyed this one. Yes it was Burmarsh, I had planned on getting Churchill at bolophs but with a bit of a wait I decided to jump up to Burmarsh. I should be off to the East Anglia Transport Museum tomorrow!
