A very good look at social attitudes in the 1980s, which were frankly appalling. Victorian ideas of "deserving" and "undeserving" victims still applied, and if you didn't conform to narrow ideals, you were deemed to have earned all the pain and misfortune you got. It was a very brutal, authoritarian way of looking at the world. This applied not only to gay men, but also to women on many levels and to children. There was little attempt ever to understand "why". As Jung famously said "Thinking is hard. That's why people judge." And that was rampant in the 80s. Sadly, it's also why so many child sex scandals were brushed under the carpet. The kids were likely to be judged as "trash" or having brought it on themselves in some way, particularly if the accusations were against someone who was "respectable".

The portrayal of AIDS as a gay disease probably cost millions of people who weren't gay their lives. We now know that most HIV infections in the western world can be traced back to a strain of HIV that was brought to New York in c. 1969 from Haiti. It then spread through the homeless and poor heterosexual population in New York (it was subsequently found in the 1980s that 1 in 5 women in Brooklyn were HIV+), but nobody had been paying attention because the victims were poor with limited healthcare access. Most were also women, and the symptoms of AIDS are often less distinctive in women (for example, women are less likely to get Kaposi's sarcoma). It was only when HIV later jumped into the gay community at somw point later in the 1970s and cases of AIDS started to appear there, that the campaigning began. The gay community included more affluent and influential individuals, and many who'd been used to campaigning. Unfortunately, it also meant that society as a whole took the opportunity to extend their homophobia and label AIDS as a gay disease, a form of "divine punishment" from God. All the while the original victims and carriers of the virus, the poor, the ethnic minorities and the female, were largely airbrushed out because they didn't fit in with the homophobic narrative, and nobody had bothered to check whether they too had been infected.

We only became aware of HIV / AIDS in the 1980s but it seems that it was present in the USA and Europe significantly earlier than that. The case of teenager Robert Rayford in the 1960s in St Louis pointed to him being infected there in the 1950s. As early as 1939, small outbreaks of a specific type of pneumonia which is often linked to AIDS were noted in Danzig in Germany in prematurely born children, and then into the 1940s and 1950s in other nearby countries such as Switzerland and the Netherlands. Researchers now believe that it was caused either by a milder strain of HIV or a related virus, and that it was passed by infected blood and equipment. They speculated that the virus had arrived in Germany from Cameroon, which had been a German colony.

I feel especially sorry for the people who contracted HIV before anybody knew it existed. I was a kid during the 80s and remember the very powerful public health campaigns. It terrified people but it probably saved a huge number of lives. HIV rates in the UK ended up being a fraction of those in the USA.

It's just that these days the treatments are so good that there is the real chance to stop HIV being transmitted in the first place, or from developing into AIDS if caught in time. People are much more aware of safe sex, and transmission of HIV can be prevented by PREP.

Paid for by the biowarfare defense chapter, gallo studied the cancer lympho retroviruses for decades before the first early documented 1980/1981 cases in gay population appeared. A virus specifically created to target Tcell leukocytes and lymph glands to waste away human body. Engineered, perfected, isolated, and introduced into the gay population for sociopolitical reasons to halt their civil rights. Look at interview fauci stated at a fime when theyd just got their civil rights "a virus gets introduced" Interesting it began spreading in its incubation stage around the late 70s when Harvey Milk rose to political status in the gay community. Elitists have a long hostory of "introdicing" various things into groups, communities, movements they view a threat to their comfortable wealthy existence, to halt stop those they see as in their way. Even more infuriating is the destruction, de-rooting bulldozing decades ago of trees with bark that cleared the viroid immune cancer virus out of the body. They knew those trees cured the virus out if the body. Hope a wise honost research scientist grew the trees back to use as better meds like prep. D-32 gene stops the HIV human immune cancer virus also makes people immune to HIV and other cancers. They need to take D-32 cells from people who have D-32 and infuse those cells into hiv people asap. Make the D-32 gene cell infusion in a similar way for a vaccine. They've known about the D-32 gene since the late 80s. And they've known about the trees bark around same era. NO excuse so many millions of babies children and adults have suffered died worldwide when there are known cures all along. Evangelistic hypocritical preachers falsely claiming its the wrath of God when God would never punish or let innocent babies children suffer from the lethal cancer hiv. Damned hypocrite televangelists you aren't God but He will see to it you go to hell where you belong with your sanctimonious holier than thou bs. STOP blaming Africa. STOP blaming Haiti. STOP blaming the gay community when you elitists paid gallo n co to engineer the virus to suit your sociopolitical Narcissistic greedy agenda. Whether it's called HIV/HTLV 3, HHV9, SLIM, SIDA, Aids, ARC, the fact is it is Cancer as it was rightly called at the beginning. It is the Cancer institute looking for meds to stop the virus replicating. Not some other type of institute. Make it right and make the D-32 gene cell infusions into HIV person's asap. Make potent curative medicine from those trees bark. You created the damn thing so it's Your responsibility at Cancer In stitute to cure it. Are you getting paid to be so insipodly slow making the cure? Appears so when the cure has been available all along. There are reports that the mid 70s hepatitis vaccines aimed specifically at young Manhattan gay men purposely contained the cancer-genic pathogen called HIV. And they had to report back every 6 months after the vaccines to their doctors where their blood was tested. Either they were testing the blood to see any changes in leukocytes, drops in Tcell counts or to find out how long telltale infections P.carinni and HHV8/Kaposi's appeared, or the full blown symptoms took. So they're claiming "it was a new infectious agent we'd never seen before or known about" is a lie a coverup. Fauci let it out everyone suspected it was a virus. Nefarious all around. NO excuse for all those who've suffered and died and who are currently infected with the bio-engineered super-cancer hiv when there's the D-32 gene cure knowledge and those trees bark are cures. NO excuse. Truly there are RSVPs in the worst depths of hell for gallo, the wealthy elites financially behind him, the hypocritical ethically warped televangelist preachers, and Nancy Shmancy who's expensive designer gowns were paid for with the homeland budget cuts and Ol ronnie boy reagan who could afford those ridiculous designer gowns for his hideous freak looking wife yet couldn't cure millions of people from an engineered dreadful cancer virus.

Greetings! This was 40 years ago. Do you feel as if it was yesterday?

Thanks for the greetings. It feels many, many years ago & yet at the same time only yesterday. If RTD hadn't done Its A Sin then all these videos might still be a dark cupboard locked away & almost forgotten. Mind you - I've learned a hell of a lot since I did this presentation, which I'm sure my audiences are glad about!!!!

@@aids_archive I enjoy watching the videos you've shared with all of us here on YT and it would've been a huge loss if they were left aside to collect dust. It's great that you were involved in the relevant organizations and worked on the projects that enabled you to get most up-to-date health information regarding HIV/AIDS. Thankfully it has never been as widespread in the UK as in the US.

that's my dad at around 12mins - a haemophiliac and victim of the infected blood scandal but I cannot believe how positive he is... he has the chance to hold the government to account and chose to talk about how he wouldn't change the treatment. we lost him in 1991, he was 45 - @Martin Weaver, you have no idea how grateful i am for you uploading this. I mean this quite literally, it's the only thing I have to remember him by and here he is, moving, speaking, smiling. Although I mean it, a 'thank you' doesn't seem to come close.

Dear Chris, Thank you for your kind comments. It’s really gratifying to me that this Archive can have the positive effect it has for you. So many people have died and each deserves to be remembered as do those who were also affected and left behind. It seems that you now have a more complete memory of your father and that is priceless. You are very welcome. Martin
