An exploration of place identity
Dispatch from Home (of the Ancestral Puebloans)
I made it home to Utah (after my eighth summer in Alaska) and hit the desert.
This dispatch comes from my first night camping alone after a month in southern Utah with my Portuguese buddy, Lara.
I explored an area that I love. This place holds Anscestral Puebloan dwellings tucked into the edges of cliffs, and petroglyphs of sheep and anthropomorphic figures on slick, varnished walls.
Thanks for hanging out!

Saying goodbye is part of the gig

Fall doesn't wait for summer to end in the interior of Alaska. It's time for berries, friends, and final goodbyes 🧡
We're all just reinventing the wheel

I picked up a hitchhiker a few weeks ago. He saw himself as intrepid and original. I probably felt the same way about myself in my younger years. We're all just reinventing the wheel, and that's not just okay, it's a rite of passage.

This trip was nine years in the making. When I showed up in Wrangell St. Elias I wasn't 22 anymore, apparently. I think that the time to do the things that interest you is when you find them most interesting. This trip helped me realize that my dream changed. I'm okay with that because I made different choices, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't have loved live in Wrangell St. Elias when I was youn...
When the adventure ends

When the adventure ends we all must contend with our own grief. “Reentry demands a physical return to rank and utter bullshit, but with a spirit strengthened, wisened by the experience, more equipped for living… maybe.” Katie Lee, Sandstone Seduction If you want to know where I'm heading this year: ua-cam.com/video/85I5uvgfVhk/v-deo.html

On section two of the Hayduke Trail we ran out of water (well, down to our last swigs), twice. Water is sacred. “Water does something to you. It’s like finding gold, but more shimmer, less money. It is the purer element.” Craig Childs We are nothing but water worshipers, out here. Thanks for watching!
Trading the desert for the ocean / I had to get away
Переглядів 175Рік тому
In the heat of summer I high tailed it to the ocean. Both the desert and the ocean are landscapes where life is teeming in the most unexpected places. That being said, living in southern Utah can be brutal when the temperature soars and you don't have air conditioning. I needed cold ocean waves. I needed fog and moody weather. This did just the trick.

Place Attachment and Identity: A Love Note to the Desert
Beautiful!
Thank you, and thanks for watching! 🍻
Rugged and cool😊
Howdy James, thank you! It was tough but amazing terrain. Cheers 🍻
You have a gift with words! Beautiful place, and the last shots got me (unsurprisingly). I love Mary Oliver too, and I felt the Vitamin D comment at the end, lol
Thank you Lara. Love you and miss you. Can't wait to explore this place (and everywhere in the desert) with you and our gal Ellen 🧡🧡
Beautiful video! Started watching you back when I searched for Ellen Meloy related videos. I'm a huge fan. (Her artwork living permanently on my arm is proof of that) I currently live in this beautiful area, and your videos always inspire me to get out and explore my backyard more often. Much love
Hi Danielle, thank you so much for the kind words. Ellen Meloy is a treasure. My favorite book of hers is The Last Cheater's Waltz. It broke open my brain. Do you have a fav? Wow, I'd love to see that tattoo of yours-- we might need to meet in the desert when I head back in that direction! That's awesome you call it home. Hugs from northern Utah today 🍻
What a lovely video, thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for reaching out and the kind comment. Best from a snowy day in Northern Utah 🍻
I found you because your comment to NomadUnknown was right by mine. I love both of your channels. ☮️
Oh wow, thank you so much Patti! That's so kind of you. I have a few people I always look forward to hearing from-- things like this mean a lot. Best from the desert 🍻
The algo brought me here. Beautiful camers work. What a stunning environment!
Awesome, thank you so much for reaching out Trina! It truly is such an amazing place-- we're so lucky to have places like these accessible. Hugs from the desert 🍻
I always click ‘CC’ so that I do a double intake of your narrative. Peace
Howdy Michael, thank you so much for your kind comment. I admit that getting sound levels right isn't my strong suit. Thanks for bearing with me as I continue to learn. Cheers from the desert 🍻
You videos always provide food for thought as well as beauty. I love them all.
Hi Nicola! Thank you so much. Are you gearing up for another UK winter? I spent a lot of time in Kanab in October and I thought of you. Hugs from Utah 🧡
Feel good feels! Thank you!💙
Loovvvveeee youuuuuuuu 🧡🧡
Thank you. No we are just doing about 10 days in winter. That is the only time my hubby has off. So end of Jan. First of Feb. any thoughts? Where to start and stop?? Because I am having a hard time figuring out where to do 10 days in the winter. 😆
Brrrr! I love the entire stretch from Picket Post (Superior) to Oracle. Gorgeous desert, pretty cruisey in some stretches, and no sky islands to climb and sleep in the freezing temps. Obviously do your research, though. I think the azt is deceptively cold.
I am researching AZT trail for my first time. I loved how positive you are and great info. Made some notes! TY for this😎
Woohoo I'm guessing you're planning a spring nobo? Epic :) thanks for the kind words. I hope you have an awesome time out there 🍻
wow stunning videography!!! what camera do you use?
Thank you! I'm using a canon r6 ii these days :)
Hey great video but how good is the AZT marked is it a fairly good blazed trail.
As of 3 years ago I found it to be well marked in conjunction with the Far Out App. Some folks used paper maps in 2021, and they did go the wrong way a few times. I wish I could be more specific, but I work in the trail-less wilderness of Alaska so any trail is a good trail to me. Have an awesome time out there if you're gearing up for a spring thru🍻
Love that you have a gift from Alaska that you can bring back to the desert and enjoy. It looks delicious. But more than delicious it carries all those treasured memories from your summer.
Honestly it turned out way better than I expected! Memories, yes. Delicious, YES! Cheers and thanks for being one of my regular watchers! 🍻
I love this! So beautiful! ❤
Thank you! Cheers from the southwest deserts 🍻
It's great my dear friend!!! The places are so colorful!!!!
Sooo colorful and beautiful 😭 thanks for watching and reaching out. Cheers from the desert 🍻
BEAUTIFUL! 😍
The colours in this video are an encyclopedia of gorgeousness. Where's the winter job?
Howdy Nicola! The colors in Alaska are truly stunning in the fall. Thanks, as always, for reaching out. For safety concerns I don't want to put the job online just yet-- especially since it's new. Cheers from southern Utah 🍻🧡
Very nice trail. Thanks for sharing. sub & 👍27
Howdy Khurshid! Thanks you :) Cheers from the desert 🍻
You strike me as a beautiful soul. Please keep the videos coming for as long as they help to fulfill you.
Thank you, this is a super kind comment hyoung. All the best and cheers from the desert 🍻
You don't need a name to connect. You should let go of that requirement.
I agree with you. You don't need a name to connect. Connection, to me, requires more than talking at someone about yourself for four hours, though. Cheers!
everything has weight and pull
Your username is amazing.
excelent video!!!
Thank you! Howdy from the desert 🍻
It's amazing my dear friend!!!
Thank you, and thanks for being here :) cheers!
Best view in the park at 3:46. That grin is PURE JOY! ♥
Awh, thanks! It was lovely out there. Looks like your adventures are treating you well? Way to get after it!
Like that glacier/desert analogy. Insightful.
Thanks, I guess it makes sense though? Water moves the way it moves. Cheers 🍻
You're one of the coolest (and clearly so skilful and independent!) people I've ever met and I count myself so lucky looking forward to my days hiking with you! I don't know what it's like to be in your shoes, but you are awesome. Also that opening few seconds... beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
Damn, thanks so much Lara. Everyone is cool in their own way. We all struggle, right? I'm lucky to be hiking with you!! Hope the canyon is treating you well 🧡🧡
So informative 👏💯‼️
I am always moved by your videos. Keep doing and being wonderful.
Thank you so much for the kind words, Paige. It really means a lot. Best from Alaska 🍻
❤❤❤
🧡🧡🧡
You are beautiful just the way you are.
Thank you 🧡
Well said, Treats!
Thank you Rock Dawg! I hope we get to cross paths in person sooner than later 🍻
Gosh! This video & all your videos are so special. I so resonate, it can be SO tough 🩷 you inherently and unequivocally are enough and belong, friend! Thank you for sharing your craft with us.
Hugs and loves 🧡 thank you so much for your kindness and for watching my creative endeavors. It means so much. Cheers from Alaska 🍻

What month whats that?
I think August, but flash flooding can happen anytime. This summer has had BIG floods. Stay safe out there :)
Thank you for all your info. I am now hooked 👊
Have fun and be safe out there, Amanda!
