I killed him again recently and noticed some changes they made to the melee form causes the 2 attacks at the start before you move doesn't give you enough time to kite without getting hit. If you want to do this method, just hit once right when he spawns (in melee form) and run 3 marked tiles over without attacking to continue as normal. Since Jamflex made it possible to get hit zero by his melees again, this probably isn't the best strategy nowadays. I'm greenlogged with bow so I cba learning a different way :)

Easy method I've been using thus far. Averaging 3-4 kills, sometimes more if he drops food & pots.
I am using rcb and mithril sapphire bolts for the proc during shield phase. Corruption helps when it noodles a bunch. A better crossbow would help, but only for the damage done while smite is active (when the bolts don't proc).
