I think that is certainly part of it. In "Fight Like A Man" by Emeal Zwayne, he outlines three steps that Satan takes when tempting us: Discontentment, Deception, and Deification. Our trust in God's goodness and sufficiency in our lives is certainly part of Satan's attack, but ultimately, I believe, Satan wants to entice our pride to remove God from being Lord over us in the area of our life that he is attacking.

Hello, Casimir. Thank you for leaving us a comment. Proverbs 3:7 says, "Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil." (There are other verses. If you want to study this out, LifeBible.com is a good website where you can search for this.) You are partly right in that we should respect God, but the Bible does also tell us to fear and tremble. Philippians 2:12 says, "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." How do we both love and respect God and fear and tremble before Him? The answer is contexual. An unbeliever, or someone who hasn't received Christ as their Saviour, cannot love God. Romans 8:7 says, "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." In that verse, enmity means enemy. We are all natural rebels against God, the holy and righteous judge of the universe who will punish all rebels. Revelation 21:8 says, "But the fearful (cowardly), and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." The proper response to all of this is fear, the kind of fear that a child has for his father against whom he has disobeyed and is now anticipating the consequences of his actions. Our response to this fear, though, should be to beg God for mercy. This is where salvation comes in with the promise from God that He will forgive you and cleanse you and purify you and adopt you as His child. At this point, being now a child of God, the relationship does change. We can now love God and serve Him, not out of fear of punishment, but out of a deep appreciation for what He did for us on the cross of Calvary. Fear, now, is not a fear of punishment for wrongdoing because we are now forgiven of all of our sin. Fear is now a fear of disappointing God. How disappointed would you be if you sacrificed everything for someone who received gladly at first but then later had nothing to do with you and wasn't appreciative? This is the fear the we as Christians should have. We don't fear Hell, anymore, but we do fear standing before God empty-handed. We shouldn't want to waste the great gift that God has given us. We want to please Him. Does that make sense? We start with a fear that drives us to repentance and a desire for God's mercy and end with a fear that drives us to love God, draw closer relationally to God, and serve God more and more and better and better each day. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region."

@@cbcmarshallmo Again, the "gentiles" Paul and the disciples were preaching to were either Greek converts to Judaism, or the elect diaspora, grafted-in descendants of the tribes of Israel who were dispersed among the nations. Through the ministry of the disciple's great commission, they were called out from the nations to again be a holy nation of kings and priests, sealed for the day of redemption, which only they lived to see. Nobody today is a "gentile" of that sort, wannabe.
