Dan Gutstein - 'Poor Gal: The Cultural History of Little Liza Jane'
My guest this week is author Dan Gutstein, who joins me to chat about his book 'Poor Gal: The Cultural History of Little Liza Jane'.
The book traces the history of one of America's most recorded folk songs, from its origins amongst enslaved people on southern plantations, through the Civl War and minstrelsy, to the folk revival and beyond. On its journey Little Liza Jane, and its variants, was performed and recorded by a huge range of artists, including Del McCoury, Nina Simone, Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte, Alison Krauss...and David Bowie.
It's a fascinating subject, which could have filled several episodes!
You'll find more info on Dan and the book (including links to buy a copy) at www.dangutstein.com/#/littlelizajane (www.dangutstein.com/#/littlelizajane/)
There's a great playlist of Liza Jane recordings on Spotify (open.spotify.com/playlist/5T5dZEZIz7I9zK5ZWlYZ5g?si=OfeP2LEzS9uzeCoXeOmVHA) if you want to check out some of the versions we discuss in the episode.
You'll also find info on the ongoing film project Dan talks about at www.lizajanemovie.com (www.lizajanemovie.com/)
Happy picking!

the thing about Tony is to not be sad that he's gone. Be happy that he was here. I went to the Tony Rice Musicfest in Camp Springs NC. and Josh Williams performed the Church Street Blues Album in it's entirety. and knocked it out of the park. I disagree with the guitar being hard to play. Snuffy Smith reset the neck.. and Josh's Williams played the antique frequently. and Tony told him that you can't force this guitar you have to make love to it. and Josh'and Bryan Sutton said if you played the guitar hard that you got nothing out of it.
great video, Sir, if you don't mind, i have a question.have you thought about getting Wyatt Rice back for part 2 of his memories of touring.and recording with Tony. Great video..... Cheers
She is the embodiment of Grace through Humility
This is awesome interview thank you for uploading this I just discovered Tony about 4 months ago maybe 5:00 and I was wondering if wyaytt was his brother. Since I've discovered them it's made my sense of music even more committed now than ever in writing songs
Brittany is awesome for the punch brothers
Very very helpful. Appreciate this.
Thanks for listening!
Thank you for great interview and wonderful to listen to Bill interview.
So many hits or should be hits on this record. She picks good songs and good accompanying singers. They all meshed perfectly with her beautiful voice.
These are awesome thanks man
Great! Glad you like them. They’re all on the website too (bluegrassjamalong.com) and you can speed them up and slow them down without affecting pitch, if that’s useful!
I watch The Acoustic Shoppe channel regularly. When an Atkin arrived they always made big deal of it and would inevitably say it was a cannon. Once I got my hands on a D-37, I immediately took it to the counter. I’ve played bluegrass for about 35 years on the same Martin. I’ve played tons of vintage martins and boutique guitars. That Atkin D-37 is the best guitar I’ve ever played. I can’t believe I own the best guitar I’ve ever played. Want to know what my 2nd favorite guitar is? It’s the White Rice I bought a couple months later. It’s the coolest guitar ever. My friends would buy it off me immediately. I own my two favorite guitars. I’m a dreadnought guy but I happened to play an EOM and it was so incredible I bought it. It’s sounds like a dreadnought! You think I’d be done with this story. You’d be wrong. I saw a candy apple green LG 47 online and it was the most beautiful guitar I’ve ever seen. I ordered one of those. It’s just now done being built and should be on its way to MO soon. I’m so excited. I went from thinking I’d never find another guitar I like better than my Martin to buying 4 Atkin and I’ll never play my Martins again. If you are in the market for a guitar, wait until you can play an Atkin. I can’t say enough about Alister and his guitars.
Love the aside about producing and recording Brittany, Paul, and Jordan of Hawktail before they were Hawktail and how Sam worked with them. Great conversation Matt ❤
Excellent interview...sad that we lost Jim
What guitar are you playing? Mahogany top? Nice sound, love the tune
Thanks! It's an Eastman E1D - sitka top with Eastman's 'classic' finish and sapele back and sides (very similar to mahogany)
What you're doing here is awesome!
Thank you!
Great conversation. Critter is so eloquent at explaining why Drive and The Bluegrass Sessions are fantastic, but in my opinion My Bluegrass Heart is at least as wonderful!
Good interview. Totally! 🙂
Thanks for the great interview Matt! I look forward to reading Bill's book about our late friend/hero Tony.
Great interview. I wish there were more like this very one. Wyatt is quite the story teller😂 I've often wondered how people get access to be able to get interviews like this ine? Great job!
Thank you! The truth is I just email or message people I want to talk to and interview the ones who say yes! It does help sometimes if I'm talking about someone else - I think I only got Alison Krauss to agree because I was talking about Tony Rice and she loves Tony!
@@bluegrassjamalong wow I didn't expect a response but thank you that sounds so cool and you are a great interviewer. Thank you so much. 🙏
Very nice well done
Meeting Browyn on 4/20/2024 , was priceless ( probably the best moment in my life ). Signing my 🎻 was actually secondary to Meeting our future music star . Wish you great success like you have never seen , and best wishes for you and Jason . GOD couldn't match a better pair ( man and woman ) . You 2 were destined to be in ❤ . Hopefully I will meet Jason next and be so lucky to get 🎻 signed . Thanks for inspiring me to the fiddle
Feel such a fool never wrote or typed her name correctly , FORGIVE me Bronwyn . I am OCD . This is a conversation for dr as I don't write someone's name incorrectly many many times . Love the music and the people associated to music !!!
This is incredibly helpful ! Thank you for taking the time to make this and upload this! I’ve been able to practice the lead greatly with this
You’re welcome! There are dozens more on my website and podcast too (plus interviews with some great musicians) - bluegrassjamalong.com/episodes/tunes/
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
This video is Such a beautiful visual presentation.
Great interview. Did he mean Talking Book (Stevie Wonder) at the end ?
I'm guessing so - I replied presuming that's what he meant! Thanks for listening
P.S., At one point in the interview Wyatt meentions that Tony took him to see The Osbourne Brothers. Sonny had several "candid" photos of Tony that were quite funny. Sonny was actually close with Tony, fyi.
Great interview, I hope folks listen and appreciate all of the history that Wyatt witnessed and was a part of! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. It was such a treat to get to talk to Wyatt and hear some of this stuff!
Cheers! Hope you enjoyed the tune.
It sounds great, man. I appreciate all the work you are doing interviewing lots of flatpickers and other folks in the bluegrass world. We need more folks like you--Tim.
Thank you!
1:14:37 AK
I hope he writes the book!
Me too!
Very nice. What’s the tune?
Thanks! It’s actually one of mine called Cool Side of the Pillow
Wow really like it. Well done.
Incredible interview, thankful for your channel and Wyatt
Thank so much for listening
This is the lesson that we seem to forget but it’s as important to a musician to know this as anything he/she could learn. There are days I want to give up but as humans, we will have these days. The main thing is if you’re passionate enough about what you’re doing to care how you sound, you will persevere
Totally! Thanks for listening
Excellent interview. Thanks for all of the great information you’ve been getting to us
Great interview, loved seeing these guys at Dees when we were visiting from London UK in September , James has a wonderful voice
Thanks! He really does. I’m a Londoner too - they’re touring in Ireland, wish they were coming here as well! Thanks for listening
She's the best IMO! Versatile, timing, clean notes, improvising, etc. Awesome entertainer!
I 💕 love you Wyatt. Am your Aunt Susie!!!😂❤
Great Pod
Man I do love a Jarrod Walker song. Show me the Door...OMG Born to fall and built to rust. ........You knew her before I did.
Nice interview. Remembering Tony well this day after Christmas. He must be smiling.
Thanks for listening!
Thanks for posting. Chris seems like such a down to Earth person. I never get tired of hearing him talk about music and his experiences.
Thanks for listening. Chris is great - it was so cool getting to talk about music with him
I just subscribed to your podcast . Sierra is something special.
Thanks. She really is!
