How to Win a Dinghy Handicap Race
Hi,
It's been a while, I hope everyone ( in the UK ) is safe from storm Eowyn!
It has taken me ages to upload anything, and that's all kinda my fault. But also there haven't been many windy days or events.
This is week 3 of the EDYC Icycle Series, we are currently overall leaders in the large dinghy handicap fleet but that can all change...
In the news?
Abbie and I are now proud owners of an RS200, which we hope to take to the UK nationals this year.
Hopefully there will be more videos coming out, I feel I'm setting the bar too high as everyone seems to not care when we win and do everything flawlessly, but enjoy my crew falling overboard.

Late Summer 29er Sail

It's been a while, but the wind was forecast for 20knots all day and then when we got sailing there was almost no wind...
Likely the worst Fireball Video you'll see.

Mess about with Abbie and me on the fireball. Video is from months and months ago. Hope you enjoy

Took the Fireball out for a blast and got a lot more wind than expected. So we made the best of it, in the most fireball way possible. Apologies for any colourful language aboard my boat....
Light Breeze 29er Sailing

I will admit this is a part 2 to my earlier video. The wind was so wildly different that the videos just didn't work together. Also means the 29er will get more screen time!

Patrick and I take the 20 for a spin, when a sudden squall makes the boat really feel like a skiff.

Light breeze during the day, that kept dying off till it hit zero. After derigging the boats breeze back on, but was time to go...
Breeze on Training

This is from over a month ago, I've been doing so much that I haven't had a chance to edit. Big breeze from the west made for a lively sail. Seems Abbie and I are always finding ourselves in stronger and stronger breeze.

Not much to this video, was running the camera on 15% charge and barely got any video. Ah well, I'll charge it next time

Ignore the blabbering Big gust makes us go down the mine. Not going to lie, that's probably the driest we were that day.
29er Light Wind Practice

After a shocking start and 2 turns we started the race. Light wind of less than 8knots gave a slow pace to the day. Hopefully you appreciate this video being a little slower - if you don't I can't do much about it sorry.

More coaching at Ballyholme. This week we had a front passing. Winds starting at 15 knots and building to 25 gusting by the afternoon. Very fun as we did many short races.

looking really good!!
Those screams😂
They make it! Bringing home the thrill, the joy
Great work although you do seem to be stopping through the tacks but once you hit the sweet spot you will be flying ❤
Deffo need to work on the tacks. Crappy self tacking jib that doesn't tack isn't helping but a good work man doesn't blame his tools....
Holy moly! 😂😂😂😂some craic
managed to do that in early March in Boston.... it was around 30 farenghiet at the time (around -1 Celsius) was the first run of the season, and somewhat forgot how the boat handled it did not help that we got a few 40knot gusts out of nowhere. the first two we were running downwind, but on the third we were on Beam Reach... tried to do something but the rudder was out of the water before we could.
That was not a jib!LOL
Correct, that was indeed the worst gybe I've seen today. It's also the only, but that's not important right now
Wow. The title warned us, but I didn't expect it to be that bad! Hahah good on you for sharing
Maybe try some of the usual commands "standby to Gybe", "Helm to Weather", "Gybe-Ho". Lets your crew know what's happening, and also reminds you to move the helm. 🤣
Bahaha 🤣🤣
During a regatta on our 3 person Dingy. Our helmsmen didn't want to duck under the boom during a gybe and of course he tripped and fell out the back. The Mainsail trimmer and I exchanged a look, shook the head and miraculously managed to keep control and recover the spinnaker. On the way back to him we discussed if we even want him back after that :D
How do you recover the boat from that position?
Soon enough I'll upload a longer clip, I have exams coming up so it will be maybe a week or so ore that videos up
Man this looks so fun
Finally, a title that is not click bait
We’ve all been there.
I just happened to be there and had a camera on my head.
At least the helmsman admitted he made a balls up....
I'm a beginner sailor still learning. Can I ask what went wrong and what could have been done better?
Enough to make an analysis video about it... in short I was a little confused about where I was going and made a mistake when turning the boat.
@walowesk7122 will you? Make an analysis video
Sure
Oops!
You both sail leagues better than I do.
Oh, I've done worse 😅
I've mucked up 100s of times but I swear I've never seen quite such a comical bale by the crew... face first under the boat, clouted by the rudder!!! Thank you... was having a rubbish day :) :)
EDIT: Watched again and the "ok ok" to his feet as he plunged overboard was worth a third look!!!
@AthelstanEngland youre really getting the kicks for this...
@AthelstanEngland I have more terrible feats of my sailing ability all about the channel.
@@walowesk7122 lol i await with baited breath!! To be fair I'm not brave enough to even take a camera on mine!!
What went wrong?
LOL
He did his best impression of the face plant that powerboat dude did.
So as a sailing beginner, what exactly went wrong here? and how could you avoid it next time
I initially didn't turn the boat enough. Then, when I tried crossing the boat, I did not account for the tiller moving as I moved to cross. This made the boat spin back up into the wind and caused this funny capsize...
When I learned to sail in the 80s, we'd practice capsize drill one week and man overboard drill another week. You did them both together, you must be a pro!
Accurate title. It is appreciated.
Brilliant ❤ I'm sure it was still fun 😅
Hey dude the best thing my coach ever told me is never to lead your turn eith your body weight as soon as you move your body in the boat heels over and u can’t steer so steer down first until the boat comes dangerously on top of you and then go across works in heavy air too just have to be a bit faster
It's all coming back to me now! A day out on the water, a mistake, a capsize, cold, wet, ridicule from your fellow competitors, inexplicable cuts and bruises and then someone hands you a jam jar with a yacht club insignia on it if you experienced all of these things less than any of your fellow competitors! What a sport! Top marks to your mate in trying to keep it up. Top marks to you for sharing this with the rest of us so we can relive our memories, despite us all blatantly lying and saying that we wouldn't have done that. Keep it up and enjoy the sport.
"Oops, my bad" ;oP
The RS 400 much beloved here in the UK of the shouty husband and wife helm and crew……
made my day
This is great! The rest of us would have cut this out, lol. Hats off to you!
Top 😂
J'ai fait pareil sauf que c'était un Océane 41
Had enough of this he says, I’ll take the ferry next time!!
Don’t panicked captain man warning, where did. Jonesey go!!
What does any of this mean?
I'm glad someone asked
you gotta steer to gybe man..
I missed the gybe part of the video. I saw the broach and the overboard parts.
Ouch harsh :)
I can't wait for the gybe vids when you two get trapeze(s) involved
I'm planning for that.
When your crew has had enough, and decides to go for a swim instead...
Don't blame him...
Screw this.. I'm out
Didn’t like the cut of his gybe
There is a time when it is great to practice MOB, and there is a time when it is not. Nice video, looks like you had nevertheless some fun and some stories to tell 🙂
Stuff of legend
Thanks for having the humility and good humour to share! We've all had our own disastrous moments and I literally laughed out loud at @0:28 when things went from bad to worse!
Learning to laugh at yourself is a key skill in life!
This type of sailing make memories. Its all in good fun :)
Seems like you were distracted and weren’t as far downwind as you thought before going for the gybe?
Someone else commented saying I need to move the tiller. I did, just not enough... I'm used to sailing the 29er, which sails deeper downwind and has a more sensitive tiller. An honest mistake. Hopefully, the video made you laugh anyway
@@walowesk7122 Looks like you leaned over to yank the main over, slipped, fell to the downwind side and took the tiller with you.
You do know you have to turn the rudder in order to gybe?
Whoops.
I love it when things like 0:22 happen and the boat's just like "nope". I had something the other day in my laser where I tried to tack, the boat started to turn through the wind then it just went straight backwards, turned and started sailing off in the direction it was previously going in.
It was entirely my fault, I tried pretending it was a 29er and it just did not work...
