    This is great stuff, Mike. Enjoyable water, looks really pleasant. Not looking for location of this creek in particular, just wondering if you're more north central or 'greater Bend region' central? I fish further west, just like seeing what's in the central part of the state. Cheers.

    Hi. Newbie here, how often do you find yourself changing flies? This is a whole new world to me!

    • @FlyFishingWithMike
      @FlyFishingWithMike 4 дні тому

      When euro-nymphing? The main reason for changing is to change the weight of the fly rather than to change the pattern. Each run or pool may require different weights from the previous spot to get the right drift. I think 80% of success is getting the right drift where the fish are. Changing weights lets you do that. The other 20% of success may be related to the fly pattern so I'll change patterns when I'm not getting takes in spots where I know there should be fish. Hope this helps!

    Not to pick on you especially but are these really nymphs or are we fishing micro-fry patterns that tolerate a little drag once in a while which makes it look like a fry that is trying to swim to get out of the current? Think of how many bites we get on the swing or lift. I just don't find nymphs with hot spots or pink heads that look more like fry with yolk sacs or a flash of red gills etc. Just trying to have an honest intellectual conversation which may be pointless as they just work!

    • @FlyFishingWithMike
      @FlyFishingWithMike Місяць тому

      I think the beauty of a good fly is it can be whatever the trout wants it to be. A wool bugger - is it a sculpin? Some other baitfish? Is it a leech? A stonefly nymph? A couple of years ago, Flyfisherman magazine did an article on how trout see. You can read it here: www.flyfisherman.com/editorial/how-trout-see/462183 Uptick is that at 12" things are blurry and it's not until 3" do they start seeing a little clearer. Size, shape, color and behavior they thought were key into getting the trout within 3" of the fly to decide what to do with it. Why do they put something shiny in their mouth? I heard someone say it's because they don't have hands. If they see something interesting, they put it in their mouth to check it out. Most of the time they can spit it out. If we get lucky and they take our fly, hopefully we set in time.

      @@FlyFishingWithMike maybe it’s a regional thing. I’ve heard Lance Egan say the same thing in some of his videos. For me, it’s the blow torch. I catch a few on it, but I’ve not had the same response as other flys on your list.

      @kinahawi - so interesting. The blowtorch is often a fly I'll start the day with and it has worked all over the west for me. I think I need to give the Walt's Worm another chance. It fits one of my main criteria as being super fast to tie.

      For bonefish, I fished Orange/Pink Christmas Island Specials and Gotchas. Mostly size 8 and occasionally a size 6. I tie my bonefish flies on Gamakatsu SL3H-3 hooks. For weight, I used small/medium bead chain eyes and XS lead eyes. You'll also want some unweighted ones for super skinny water. For triggers take a lot of crabs. They get chewed up quickly. Our guides liked the Aphlexo crabs. I plan to go back later this year. Have fun!

      Welcome to the addiction! I hate responding with a question but what weight of rod did you get? Most of the smaller creeks in the Mt Hood area are best fished with a light rod like a 3 or even a 2 weight. If you got a 4 or 5 weight, you will want to find some bigger water. For specific locations, I would get something like the TroutRoutes app that will show you different types of water that are available to fish. If you are in the Portland area, we should meet up somewhere to fish.

    • @FlyFishingWithMike

      That's great. I haven't traveled to many fishing destinations but Christmas Island is, hands down, my favorite. You will love it. I'm trying to get back in 2024. Christmas Island Lodge - It's nice. Comfortable. Has good internet coverage through Starlink if that is important to you. All of the rooms are single rooms so you are not sharing with anyone. That was a big plus for me since I was traveling alone. I think the location on the island is also favorable. Its 10-15 minutes from the airport and it is further south so the drive to the Korean Wreck and Back Country is shorter than for the lodges that are in London. They also have a private launch area for the lagoon that is about 10 minutes away from the lodge. The new owners seem to care about their guides and the community. The guides all had new boots and backpacks courtesy of the owners. They brought in local musical talent for a farewell dinner, and shared our blue-water caught fish with the guide's families. Food - All the food is brought in from Hawaii and it's not bad. I had read to take a lot of snacks as food could be a problem. Was not the case the week I was there. It's not 5-star restuarant food but we didn't go hungry. Think home-cooked style of food. I don't drink but there was wine and beer available at dinner. There's no limit on the number of water bottles during the day. They had plenty of water on the boats for you. I was pleasanty surprised on both the amount and quality of the food. Most of the snacks I took got left behind. Guides - There was a set of very experienced guides and a set of newer guides being trained. Their normal policy is 1 guide per 2 anglers but the week I was there, there were only 4 anglers so we actually had 2 guides every day for each angler - a seasoned guide and the trainee. It was great having another set of eyes. I have no doubt that by 2025 the newer guides will be fantastic. I know there is another lodge on the island that they have a 1 guide per angler ratio but Christmas Island Lodge has all private rooms. So...choices there. Listen to the advice on taking sturdy boots - you will appreciate them when wading the surf at Korean Wreck. And practice a lot and then some more with the 11/12 wt for GTs. It's a beautiful place with great fishing. Please let me know if you have any other specific questions.

    Do you really like the Galvan Torque 8. I’m buying a 7wt Scott Wave and I was thinking of the Galvan Torque 8. Perhaps the 7 size may be better. But I have been told it ok to go 1 size up lager with the reel

    • @FlyFishingWithMike
      @FlyFishingWithMike 7 місяців тому

      I like the Galvan T8. I also own a Galvan Rush that I've been using on my euro rod. The T8 sounds good in both directions. On the other hand, I REALLY like my Nautilus reels. I now own 3 of them. For me the consideration for a T7 vs a T8 would be what type of line is going on the reel and how much backing is needed. The price is so similar that I would go with the T8 for the increased backing capacity. I've put a sinking tip line on my T8 and fished it on my 7 weight when chasing bull trout.

    Hi Mike, great video. A few questions: (1) Leggings - are those SPF? brand you suggest and where to get? (2) How did Cube File Hub work for you? (3) was it a GILL or GILLS hoodie? Can't seem to find an integrated hoodie (with facemask).

    • @FlyFishingWithMike
      @FlyFishingWithMike 8 місяців тому

      Thanks! 1 - yes the leggings are UPF50+. I took several different brands but can recommend the leggings from Waterlust (waterlust.com) especially if you want something a little more colorful. You can get them directly from their website. I also had a pair from Ubestyle (bityl.co/MZNN) that I purchased on Amazon. 2 - The NewQ Filehub AC750 Travel Router (amz.run/7Oc6) worked great. Just had to plug in the HDD and the SD and then push the backup button on the device. They have an app that you can use as well. This really simplified doing backups. 3 - GILLZ (outdoornation.com/collections/gillz). I used the Pro Series Hoodie UV. I know that Simms now has one with an integrated face mask. I like the integrated face mask as it prevents any gaps on the neck that can happen with a separate face mask Let me know if you have any other questions.

      @FlyFishingWithMike myrtle creek is a tributary that empties into the st Joe. Several years ago when I fished it, it was full of cutthroat

    Please don't call out the rivers you fish in these areas by name. The pressure on these fisheries just continues to grow - due in large part to internet traffic that "hot spotting" of these fragile places. Thanks.

      Thanks for the feedback. I do have a question and I ask in all sincerity as this is question I've asked myself a lot: when is it okay to name a river?

      Hey Brad - we got to the St Joe on Saturday 10/7. Fished there Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning. We moved to Kelly Creek Monday afternoon. Fished there the rest of Monday and then on Tuesday (in the rain). We drove out on Wednesday. My buddy headed to Boise to do some buck hunting and I drove over to the Owyhee. I fished there Wednesday evening and then on Thursday. Drove home on Friday. Lots of fun except the Owyhee was very crowded on Thursday.

      Go for it!. I wasn't sure it I would like it but I really do. I started with a kit like this one from mudhole: tinyurl.com/yc3frbd7 Add a rod kit and it's easy to get started. You should also check out rodbuilding.org

      @FlyFishingWithMike 11 місяців тому

      Hi John - Thanks for watching. I agree - these streams are beautiful up in the Coast Range. The rod is 6'6" 2 weight that I built from a Rainshadow Unity blank. It's a moderate action rod that is great for these smaller fish.

    No better fishing on the planet than the October (Fall) Caddis hatch on the St. Joe. While everyone is crazy about elk at this time of year this is in my opinion the best time to fish the St Joe. All the way through until the snow is falling.
