Learning Circle #2: Decolonizing Bird Knowledge with Creators Garden
Decolonizing Land-Based Learning and Bird Knowledge with Creators Garden.
For our December Circle, we watched a captivating presentation by Creators Garden speakers: Joseph Pitawanakwat, Andrés Jiménez Monge and Junaid Shahzad Khan from Ontario. Creators Garden are leaders in decolonizing bird knowledge in Canada who help us deep dive on western science bird classification, western taxonomy of bird names, and how and where we bird. Did you know how the 'Canada Jay' name came about? Hear from Joseph Pitawanakwat about this and more!
Maplewood Flats and Creators Garden have remarkable similarities with respect to their emphasis on land-based education, birds, native plants, and First Nations' language. In this 1.5 hour event we learn from their interdisciplinary approach to decolonizing birding while lifting up First Nation's sovereignty. We explore how Creators' Garden engages settlers in land-based learning and we explore similarities with Maplewood Flats.
Video program:
0:00 Welcome Protocol with Les George, Tsleil-Waututh Nation Knowledge Keeper and Secretary of the Board of the Wild Bird Trust of BC
3:30 Background with Irwin Oostindie, VP, Wild Bird Trust of BC, sets the stage for today's discussion with some background.
8:00 Host introduction by Heléna Mauti (Trent University) - The role of land-based education to support Indigenous-led conservation, sovereignty and land back.
11:00 Speakers: Andrés Jiménez Monge, Junaid Shahzad Khan and Joseph Pitawanakwat of Creators Garden.
56:30 Cross-cultural conversation led by Heléna Mauti involving Creators Garden and Tsleil-Waututh and Wild Bird Trust members.
This collection of monthly learning circles supports community learning and design of Maplewood Flats' place-based & land-based education pedagogy. Maplewood Flats is a platform for decolonizing work as we lift up Tsleil-Waututh knowledge and placebased redress. Through training and learning we aim to support settler accomplices and local First Nations working together for landback projects such as Maplewood Flats.

Thank you Carolyn. We are sad to share the news of Lee Maracle's passing Nov 11th. A fundraiser gofundme page has been created to provide support to the family, and to support the work of caring for Lee's affairs, and planning for a public honouring of her legacy across Turtle Island. She made an impact indeed, as reflected by her New York Times obituary. t.co/R6Krl5p63f Please give what you can to lift up Lee's writings so the love she shared for Indigenous Peoples continues to bring laughter and bold inspiration. www.gofundme.com/f/LeeMaracle (from Lianne at Maplewood Flats)

Good présentation, Harrison. I do a lot of citizen science about bats and I've surveyed many North Shore sites for bat activity and assumed Maplewood would have lots of it. I was surprised to find it among the lowest of all sites I surveyed. One would assume this would be due to one of two issues ; lack of forage, which your survey seems to dispel or lack of suitable roosting. I tried to work with the trust to install housing as I have with the Districts but got no response.
