Thank you, my good man!
Lovely 🥰
Love Anastasia Varelli's voice. Sublime! 32:00
Sapete perche' del Monaco cantava cosi??? Perche' e' nato cosi'.
I heard her Live from the Met in the early 90s. Her wobble was so terrible that I turned the radio off. Without the visual element, her wobble was even more pronounced.
@@seanoslin5299 LOL😂
Callas correcting journalists is a vibe
Never could understand her singing Wagner. Here by contrast she is marvelous. Her voice sounds correctly scaled, whereas in the dramatic rep her voice was more like a medium sweater on a large body, hopelessly stretched out of shape. What a joy to hear her here.

I've recently started learning French too:) What a charming language!:)
Grandissimo tenore
Not good here. Too heavy above the chest voice. She has a very good chest voice, but above F it has to be let go of and the head voice needs to be focused better.
Two interesting things about this video. 1. Corelli had somewhat functional French! 2. He was actually contracted to sing Faust at the Met. I just checked the René Seghers biography of Corelli, and apparently he withdrew because Bing signed Georges Prêtre to conduct, and Corelli had hated working with Prêtre in Tosca and Norma at the Paris Opera. John Alexander replaced Corelli as Faust, opposite Caballe.
besides of her great singing here we can hear thankfully: She looked like Grace Kelly !
I saw her at the Met late 80’s early 90’s as Electra. Took a friend who had never even heard an opera much less see one in person. I don’t think he will ever return. His only comment was “well that was certainly operatic”. Maybe it was too much for a first outing. 😅
His French is great!
Franco adorata .......❤❤❤
SHE WAS ALWAYS GREAT !
I think his French dictation was fine here😂
Très sympathique. Une voix extraordinaire.
Wow, I never liked her because of that horrible wobble and her SCREAMING Wagner's gorgeous music. But this is much better, but noting too magnificent. Much better than her "iconic" records
Thank you so much for this precious, never-before-seen video! ❤ Franco's so cute, so charmant, I've melted 😍 Interesting to see how excitedly he announced here that he was to open the final season of the old Met with Faust. Only, unfortunately, a few weeks later he had such a big falling out with George Pretre in Paris, that he refused to ever work with that conductor again, and the role at the Met (and the 1965 season opener) ended up with Nicolai Gedda 😭😭😭😭 Here's the interview's transcription in English and Italian: 🇬🇧 - Franco Corelli, is this your first time singing in Paris? - Yes, this is my first time in Paris. I'll be singing three operas here: Tosca, Norma and Don Carlos. I'll be singing Tosca for my own pleasure, Norma - to sing again with Maria Callas, and Don Carlos for the pleasure of the theater. - And which operas would you like to return to perform in Paris? - I love Il trovatore and Turandot, and another opera, which I did a month ago in America, Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. It's a really charming, beautiful opera. - You're talking about America. Will you be in the United States next year? - Yes, I'll be back next year, and again for the season... - The last season? - For the final season of the Metropolitan. And I'll be singing Faust. I'll sing Faust on the opening night of the last season. And this opera was first performed eighty years ago for the first time, at the inauguration of the old Metropolitan. - All in all, a historic performance with you. - I certainly hope so.
I preferred Gedda at that time, actually. Better diction, better French, also beautiful colour.
@@franzleiermann4955 "Better French" and "better diction" are not enough to be a great singer. Corelli was not only one of the best tenors after the WW2 era, he was completely unique. He was a one of a kind phenomenon that we will never witness again. Gedda on the other hand, was just a good singer. He sang everything quite well but he was never memorable. To each his own I guess...
@@Missedtrain-gu1fh never memorable..... Gedda.....
@@franzleiermann4955 Indeed.
Superb, at her prime.
Danke! Was für unbeschreibliche Vergnügen sehen Franco Corelli!!
Magnifique témoignage d'un grand Artiste
Priceless. BTW, can anyone translate it into English?
Go to captions in the top right side ,hit auto translate and then English voila
She ruined the Lohengrin (as Ortrud) with Gundula Janowitz that I had on LPs. It was painful to hear their Act II duet, as well as when she sang "sola."
She is glissandoing up to her top notes even there
That's a legitimate stylistic choice, though, not a technical problem as was the case later.
@@mwnyc3976 I'm not convinced it isn't
Gargantuan and stunning.
How many times did the reporter have to rehearse his two lines? That's the only drama here.

Yes beutiful color very good the feeling too
Brava 😊😅
Ended her career in vocal shambles. Why so singers do this. ? She'd been wobbling for years. Why would the Met Hire her for Turandot ? Her phrasing was seemless, it would go on forever, indulgent but beautiful.
Not too bad to sing Gotterdammerung Brunnhilde at the age of 61 and Elektra of 62 in such "shambles". Today they only wish to end up like this.
I heard Jones at the Met in the mid-90s as Turandot - massive, thrilling, but pitchy, with a wobble a rugby team could run through. As much as I loved her, I always thought it was weird that she hit it big by replacing an indisposed Leontyne Price for the Royal Opera's Forza a few years before this recital: - such different voices and techniques. But for me, Gwyneth has always been exciting, scooping and all.
Scoop after scoop.... It becomes insufferable very quickly.
