I just finished the audiobook after watching the miniseries and I loved both. The love story alone was fascinating and I think there would’ve been plenty of adaptations had this story come out sooner. Comparing the two I think I’ll the miniseries a slight edge bc it incorporates Lali telling the story to Heather in his later years and the trauma he still dealt with to this day. It’s also surprising to learn that Heather Morris was a working nurse in Melbourne who wanted to take up writing. So some of the book’s faults is probably due to her lack of experience

I think you may have a misunderstanding of the context of the novel. It’s a personal experience, one that for him was driven by love. He isn’t a reliable narrator and he shows emotion in his portrayal of events. Also a side note, it would be incredibly likely that medicine was available as Polish scientist Rudolph Weigl had started his work as early as the 20’s and was in large scale testing by the mid 30’s. It’s very possible that this medicine was even more available than history shows with how tightly controlled the Nazi regime was. Enjoyed your book but just wanted to touch on that point.

I just read Eleanor Oliphant. **spoilers ahead** I can totally see some workplaces being like Eleanor’s (maybe not all the way as bad as making fun of her, calling her Michael Jackson when she was wearing her white cotton gloves for her eczema bad) but yes I agree that people should leave toxic work situations! I kept wondering if Eleanor would leave and find a different job. It was nice that Bob promoted her and then supported her when she was on leave. But the other coworkers were immature and nasty with how judgmental they were. They didn’t even start being nicer to Eleanor until she changed her appearance. They were so shallow! I do think the lack of social skills is from the depression. The depression leads her to isolate herself so she gets out of practice with socializing. Also she didn’t have consistency in her friend groups growing up after the fire. She was bounced around from different foster homes and schools. She didn’t have a childhood best friend group where she could get socializing practice in with a set of people who she trusted and loved her unconditionally and would forgive her for making mistakes or being socially awkward. So she was already lacking in socialization from childhood then the isolation stemming from the depression made things worse.

I finished reading the book yesterday. There are a number of inaccuracies and the availability of penicillin at the time was one of them as you mentioned. The most crucial error in my opinion is that Gita’s number is not correct in the book. I won’t mention the others just in case people are in the middle of reading it. I would not recommend the book per se but it has prompted me to further research the stories of both Lale and Gita, pre and post war.

Would this be good for an elderly lady with dementia? My 89 year old grandma loves mysteries, but the James Patterson books I got for her are too long, and she always forgets what she’s read and then has to start over. I’m looking for an engaging mystery that’s short enough for her to read in a sitting or two. The fact that it’s a compilation of 5 stories gives me some hope that she’ll be able to make it through one story at a time! Do the stories connect?

Unnecessary drama going on, stuff going on, too much drama going on, yada, yada, yada. Yes, the book could have been half as long. Does anyone remember Nora and Mary Ellen going on horseback and nursing people in rural mountains of VA? Great story lines from the Waltons which this book reminds me of. Yes, it is written very similarly to The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.
