Roland VS880ex as Control Surface/Audio i/o for Logic 8 (or any DAW with midi/mmc)
As the title reads, Roland Vs880ex mapped to Logic 8 and used as an i/o via the VS880 ex internal mixer and adat connectors on a G5 mac.

What a crappy video.
You hit the nail on the head. Great video. My s 1680 is way better than my zoom L12 . Vs1680 has lots of midi control . Wonderful unit.
cant hear a thing
Yes
I'm about to get a vs880 in about 2 days I'm wondering how I'm going to use this either as a interface or midi
when you connect it does it work right away or do you need to format it?
You need to format midi settings in the Roland vs.
TEM COMO FAZER ISSO COM A MESA DE SOM ROLAND VS 1680 ???
Yes.
@@arif9112 Qual programa tenho que utilizar para fazer isso ? qual o cabo tenho que comprar para poder ver as pistas de gravação no monitor dessa maneira ai ???
Wow, I have one of those in my closet and I’ve been wanting to use it for that. I’d love to know how. Awesome thanks!
in the video Arif says he uses adat with the g5 - this is not possible - the powermac g5 does not support ADAT (8 ch optical) it only supports optical SPDIF (2 channels) www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/optical-input-output-g5-dp/
Correct. I apologize for misspeaking. It is 2 channel spdif using an adat cable from the vs880 to my Mac G5.

is it possible to connect the mpc2000 midi output to the roland vs-890 midi input and assign the 8 channels to mix? and connect the vs890 midi output to pc and that the daw (ableton) recognizes the 8 channels? Thanks
Hello sir I want to connect my roland vs 1680 with my computer so I can able to use my feeder
For anyone struggling I used a midi to usb and got it working in 5 minutes
can i control my studio one pro, and if so can u explain to me how bro... this vid was really helpful..
Hello how many inputs and outputs available for ADAT ? Is it only 2 in and out or more?
Its 8 altogether once you send them to output paths. But the adat has the casual 4 i/o
Very cool =]
Que lindo!..If you explain how plugin it..this is nothing!
i have roland vs 1680 24 bits can i use it ass interface audio i wan't to add inputs like i can use 8 track on my daw for recording ?
Would this control gerage band also
I was told I can use the 880 as an outboard effects unit with my daw. Is this true? If so how do I do it? Thanks
Yes. Route two outputs from your daw and send them to the Roland, then return the output from the Roland to the daw.
@@arif9112 I'm using a mixing board. I tried going out of the auxilary outputs of the 880 and back into the 1st and 2nd tracks but it didn't work. How do I route them? Do you know which inputs and outputs of the 880 I would use and how I route them in the 880? Thanks
How did you do this?
Midi mapping the Roland faders/panpots to the DAW and engaging midi machine control for the transport controls.
@@arif9112 can you do this same thing with cakewalk from band lab?
Yo what's going on did you have to set anything up on the vs880 side an N does this work with reasons I seen on ya desktop you have reasons as well
Yep it works in Reason.
@@arif9112 do have do settings changes on the roland or is it plug and play

Me ayudó de mucho. Mi pregunta es: Como conectar la Roland con la Computadora.?
USB to midi interface
I have a VS1680, I wonder if that'll be possible to sync with computer/daw, it'd be great to make use of it as an interface for the added inputs. Anyway - this is the video I was hoping to find, cheers.
did u find the answers

@@arif9112 thanks bro. I appreciate you!
Does it work as midi controller for Cubase,Pro Tools etc?
HI Arif could you plz advice me how to connect VS-880EX to logic X (on Mac) via IRIG MIDI? or make my VS-880EX as Control Surface/Audio i/o for Logic X? There is no sound send IN/OUT in Logic X. Thank you in advance.
I'm still using Logic Pro 9. I do have Logic X installed on my laptop and I will take a look at the settings today and see if I can help you.
Click on "Logic Pro X" in the menu bar, then "Control Surfaces", then "Controller Assignments" and click "Learn". Next open up your Logic Pro X mixer, click on fader #1 and then move the physical fader on your VS-880EX. The rest should be the same as my video. This is all assuming you already have the MIDI out from the VS-880 connected to the MIDI in on your IRIG and the MIDI in on the VS-880 connected to the MIDI out on your IRIG. Hope this helps you!
Hi Arif, thanks for your reply. I have tried as per your guide but still not work. Do I need to do something in the VS (Sys...)? I will try again this week-end. I am new to the VS-880ex that just crabbed from a friend. Will keep you posted when it work!
Can I use this for playing audio and playing MIDI tracks program changes live?
I wouldn't see why not. Whatever you choose to program your daw/module/synth/etc should respond accordingly.
How can I make a MIDI track? Can I upload a MIDI and audio track to the VS880ex and play it? So I would like to use it for backingtracks and automatic MIDI controll to multifxs and other digital stuffs.
Hello do you know how to do this with pro tools?? I have pro tools ten on an IMAC with the eleven rack as my interface
Hello can this be done on pro tools?
Jeremy Harris87 I'm not sure what the extent of the midi implementation is in pro tools. I generally only use it for tracking if requested and I just use the cpu kybd as transport and the mouse for the rest.
Ar G thanks I just ended up running out of the main AVJaxks and converted them to 3/4 Jack's and just recorded the Audio. Thanks for responding
ok Thanks
Helo, can you make foto of midi settings page on roland? i have vs 1680. I can connect it by usb/midi and i know hot to set up in ableton, but, i dont know settings on vs1680.. Thanks for reply! bye
Roland should reproduce these with an SD card hard drive like Tascam DP24 and replace the SCSI port with a USB port like their AIRA line of products. I wish Roland would Standardize the VS 880's interface and Transport control section, it's sooo beautiful. They change some things on the other VS series units like the 880EX, 840 and 1600's models but this one is by far the best. It's amazingly sad how yesterday's gear was more practical and elegant than today's offerings.
I have the VS-2480 and I'm trying to do the exact same thing as you. Would I need to get a DIF-AT24 in order to make my mixer a surface controller and work with my Mac Pro?
2480 NICE! All you will need is a USB/midi interface or use of the midi ports on your audio interface.
+Ar G in my studio I'm using a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 FireWire interface. Would I link the Roland to the Presonus?
Man that presonus is a nice piece too! Connect the midi out from the vs to the in on the 16.0.2 and the midi in from the vs to the out on the 16.0.2. Then use the midi learn in your daw to set up a template. I also would use the vs on an insert with that presonus to take advantage of Roland's 24bit dsp on the 2480.
+Ar G Thank you so much bro! You're a huge help!
No problemo! I'm glad this video is actually helping a few people. I didn't think anyone would care about an old vs recorder, but I'm happy to see I'm not alone! Have fun!
I would love to know how you physically routed out of the vs 880 ex to get all this control pf parameters such as panning and fader levels.Roland says it can't be done but I believe you've done it! Thanks, bjm
The faders and pan pots transmit midi cc data. If your daw has a midi learn function it will take you 15min or so to get a template set up. The important thing to remember is that when you change modes on your VS, it sends different cc data. So when in record mode you can set faders/pans 1-8, in play mode set 11-16. Turning on mmc in your daw will activate the transport functions. I've tested this in logic 9, ableton, reason and cubase. All this is happening with a midi-usb interface connected at ins and outs. At this particular time I was using the spdif ins/outs on my VS connected to my G5, eliminating the need for an audio interface by using the VS internal routing. But that is another video 😊
+Arif Ghalib Thank you. I will keep working at it, as I'm a die-hard fan of VS 880 ex! I've easily transferred from digital outs to my Pro Tools express and can go one track at a time no problem. Getting them to sync once on the grid is the issue, so thank you very much. Really enjoyed your style of explaining things !
You can remove the VS-880 hard drive and use an external enclosure to transfer audio using VS Wave Export (Windows Only:( , or install a CF card drive like I did and get a CF card reader for your mac/pc.
Hey Thanks for this, but I can't seem to get the transport buttons recognized. The faders work but not the transport, is there something do fix in the menu?
Enable midi machine control (MMC) in logic settings
This will work with any software daw that supports midi. You will need a midi-usb interface.
Hey there. I really need some help with this although I'm trying to sync it to GarageBand. :( I'm stuck. Please advise I'd really appreciate it. Thank you very much.
is it possible to connect the mpc2000 midi output to the roland vs-890 midi input and assign the 8 channels to mix? and connect the vs890 midi output to pc and that the daw (ableton) recognizes the 8 channels?
One more world you need to download a hard drive or something to read
So would you know if it will do the same for garageband but good to know for logic 8 I just never used it that's all
@bummyfresh100 yes you can do the same with any digital mixer/recorder that is has midi ports.
Hey man can you do the same for an VS 480
fabor friend tell me where you got the sotward to control or do I have a 1680 I am from Argentina do not understand the language so I hope am writing a reply thanks
THAT IS IF I USE LOGIC 8
+golphwing1 works with any daw that supports midi:)
Hi Brother, I have the same Roland machine how do i connect it to my laptop. So i can burn without using SCSI BURNER.
You will need an interface that has stereo trs ins or spdif over adat cable.
nice, gotta look deeper into my vs1680
Dope use of this vintage piece. Yes, indeed ahead of its time. Make more vids, curious to hear more of your work. Peace...
Yes. If you are recording directly to the unit you can record eight channels at once. If using the unit as a control surface for a pc daw it is only possible to record two channels at once. It's a very well thought out recorder/digital mixer by Roland. It really was ahead of it's time and is better than many of todays all in one digital multitrackers imo. I'm glad this video helped someone!
I've got the vs880 without the EX. Do you know if its possible to sync the 8 channels with a pc through an audio interface? S/PDIF is just a 2-channel format, what about an Audio Interface with ADAT?
TheVery0nly0ne You can sync tracks recorded to your VS with your computer DAW with midi, but you can not track 8 simultaneous sources to your DAW thru the VS. Only two at a time. The vs880 does not support ADAT only spdif. I believe the only Roland recorders in the VS series that support ADAT are the vs2000/2400/2480 equipt with an ADAT card or the alternative is Rbus to Presonus V-fire interface.
does the vs880 also allow for multichannel simultaneous recording?
also - thx for this vid!
