How To: Garmin G3X Shielded Wiring Harness Fabrication
Today I'll show you how I make the shielded wiring harness for the Garmin G3X Engine Monitor system. This same technique can be used to terminate all shielded wiring harnesses into D-Sub connectors.
Be sure to read and understand the installation manual for the equipment you are installing, I take no responsibility for errors in your installation. The information I am presenting in this channel is only for basic informational and entertainment purposes, not instructions for anything you are installing.
Be forewarned, once you let the 'magic smoke' out of the wires it's too late to correct any mistakes.

Hanging the Engine on our RV-7 in less then 15 Minutes!
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
Today Anna and I are going to show you how easy it is to hang the Lycoming engine on your Van's Aircraft RV project in about 12 minutes. Over the years I've read many forum posts about how difficult it is to hang the Lycoming Dynafocal engine on an RV. How many people do you need? How many hours does it take? How hard is it to get all the bolts in? How many cases of beer do I need to buy, etc, ...
How To: Learning to Solder
Переглядів 1314 роки тому
Follow along as I teach Anna how to solder. Today we are going to solder the header pins on an ESP8266 microprocessor. I use the ESP8266 for making MetarMaps to show the current weather at all the surrounding airports in real-time. I've also made some Word Clocks and cool light displays using NeoPixels.
Control Cable Pigtails
Переглядів 1794 роки тому
Today I'll share my method of putting the little "pigtail" on the end of a control cable used for the alternate air door and oil cooler butterfly. All ideas shown in my videos are methods that work for me and my level of experience. This is not an official Van's Aircraft video and none of the things I say or show are directions from Van's Aircraft. Use this information at your own risk. If you ...

Aviation Oil Filter Inspection
Переглядів 7184 роки тому
Today I showed Anna (and you) how to inspect an aviation oil filter. This is something all aircraft owners and operators should know how to do if you perform your own maintenance, whether on an experimental or certified aircraft. The oil filter element should be inspected every time the filter is replaced. Finding an unusual amount of metal in the filter could save your life by providing an ear...
Unboxing the Engine
Переглядів 7674 роки тому
Today we unboxed the Aerosport Power IO-375 engine. It is 4 cylinder, parallel valve, fuel injected, air cooled, Lycoming clone. It was dyno'ed at 195 H.P. and is going to be a great engine for my Van's Aircraft RV-7. I will be installing a fixed-pitch Sensenich metal propeller. All ideas shown in my videos are methods that work for me and my level of experience. This is not an official Van's A...
Nutplate Removal
Переглядів 3284 роки тому
I discovered I made my fuse panel tray for my RV-7 too narrow only after installing a bunch of K1000 nutplates. The solution was to have my granddaughter practice her solid rivet removal on this part. It really wasn't about saving the nutplates, after all these eight K1000-6 nutplates cost less than $3.00, it was good practice for her and the tray was going to the scrap pile anyway. This is a c...
Nutplates Installed
Переглядів 2334 роки тому
I had my granddaughter helping today and she installed a bunch of 6-32 K-1000 nutplates on my custom fuse panel holder. She is a fast learner and I was able to work on other things while she did a great job installing the nutplates. It was about 87 degrees (F.) and about 85% humidity before noon today. We retreated to the A/C after a short work sesion today. All ideas shown in my videos are met...
Arent you supposed to torque from the nut and not the head?
Great team!
The best thing about this is how you’ve involved your daughter. Good dad.
Thanks, she's my granddaughter. 😀
I wash it in varsol and stir the varsol well with a neodium magnet on forceps, making sure to run the magnets against the bottom. It seems to get everything ferrous that was in the filter. Usually a bit of very fine ferrous particles like a microscopic fuzz just barely visible on the magnet, or a kind of ferrous mud. I then agitate the varsol and pour it into a black plastic tray, let it settle for a while, then drain off the varsol. Non ferrous particles show up well against the black plastic. Like panning for gold. I usually get random micro speckles.
Is it raining?
Never mind - around 9 minutes in, caption confirms rain
I can’t understand how you do it so easily. I attached two Lycoming to my RV8´s . Holes never aligned, struggle to insert bolts and chose the right order .
I like the music 👌🏻🙂
Thank you very much. This was very helpful
Even the Garmin 2.5” of strip length is about the most I would want. Every inch those wires extend outside of the shield is more “antenna” to pick up noise. Ideally, you want the shield of the cable to extend into the metal back shell on the connector.
Great job guys it’s always nice to have a helper
You guys rock!
Thanks, just having fun building airplane parts!
What timing.... I am going to replace my old non-touch G3X small screens with a G3X large touch and G5 this Fall in my RV7A. Great quality video!
Well done! She will never forget these wonderful moments with you. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks!
I love your video and would love to watch more of these aircraft videos!! A little about me, I am currently in A&P school for my A&P license I still have a year left but I want to be ready to take my orals and practical's and study for them. I am very determine and passionate about aviation. That being said do you guys have any advice for me for the future to come?
Find the local EAA chapter in your area and go to a meeting. Introduce yourself and tell them you are in A&P school and are looking for learning experiences, don't be afraid to ask if anyone needs a helper. Most chapters have many very experienced, long time aviation enthusiasts (pilots and mechanics) who are willing to help the younger generation get off to a good start. Best of luck, hard work pays off!
Really cool that she helps you work on it. Hoping my son helps when we start on ours.
Thanks for the fun and instructive videos!!
You're very lucky to work in an area on the aircraft with room like that for the clamps and the driver. If you are in a tight spot, I would recommend using safety wire to hold them together while threading the screw into the holes. Having about a 3 inch loop already clamped in the pliers, then putting it over the clamp and twisting. Hope it helps.
Or you could use a awl and mini vice grips then tie a jam knot with wax string after threading the string through the bolt hole it will hold it closed when vice grips are removed and the bolt will still have enough tolerance with the thin wax string to go through no problem learned that particular trick on a C-130 in the Air Force installing what was a very long screw with several adel clamps and spacers.
Great job. Hanging my engine this week on my RV-14A and you have shown me the way! Thanks.
Where did you purchase the manifold pressure switch block on your firewall?

Very well narrated and very timely since I am at exactly this spot on my RV 7 A project ,I just ordered my Garmin hardware yesterday,, Love to see how are you build the shelf , and radio racks to carry all the ancillary boxes and remote radios etc.
I just got my g3x garmin system. I am having problems finding the wiring diagrams for what pin goes where and what wire size. Started mounting the GMU 11 Magnetometer in the wing. Any hints on were to start? Thanks great video.
Go to Garmin's website and download the G3X installation manual. support.garmin.com/en-US/?partNumber=010-01057-00&tab=manuals Draw a diagram of your system and all components, then start figuring out which boxes need to talk to each other. From there you can start on a detailed schematic using the installation manual (IM) as your guide. The IM tells you what wire to use.
@@n777rv Thanks , I have been reading the downloaded manual for a while but having trouble finding my way around it. This is my first build so all is new to me. thanks I will get started on a diagram.
@@KitfoxPilot You should look into the EAA SportAir Electrical Workshop. eaa.org/Shop/SAW/Workshop_Details.aspx?workshop=electrical_systems_avionics
I found this on VANS website. www.vansaircraft.com/downloads/#ElectricalSystemDiagrams I wonder if they have diagrams like this for the other VANS model of aircraft.
Awesome! Way to go! Job well done 👍
Spaghetti mess 😂
Awesome!
No sweat 😅
And that's a good thing!
Way to go crew!!
Good job, Anna!
